Seussical Program.Pdf Music by Co-Conceived by Stephen Flaherty Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty and Eric Idle Lyrics by Based on the works of Lynn Ahrens Dr. Seuss Book by Music Supervised, Adapted and Produced by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty Bryan Louiselle A NOTE FROM THE DIreCtor Seussical Jr. is a musical composed by Stephen Flaherty and lyricist Lynn Ahrens based on the works by Dr. Seuss. The full-length musical debuted on Broadway in 2000. The plot is a mash-up of a bunch of Dr. Seuss books, with the bulk of the story coming from “Horton Hears a Who,” “Horton Hatches an Egg,” and “The One Feath- ered Tail of Gertrude McFuzz.” With the Cat in the Hat as the narrator, audiences are transported from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, as we follow the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. “A person’s a person, no matter how small,” becomes Horton’s mantra as he vows to protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers. He also agrees to guard an egg that’s been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger and a trial, Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ulti- mately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant! May we learn something from Horton; we are not “Alone in the Universe,” but here to help each other and make a difference in each other’s lives. This production would not be possible but through the brave and gracious efforts of the cast, crew, designers, technicians, artists, donors, and volunteers listed in the program. It is our sincere hope that our hard work will bring you joy. Directors Kathy Kennel and Emily Rittenhouse 2 Please turn off all cell phones and refrain from flash photography during the performance. Image features Audrey Dwyer from a photo by Avital Zemer. 1 A Message from the Artistic and Executive Directors Welcome to Seussical – one of our favourite musicals at YPT. Apart from being great fun and featuring terrific performances, this is a profound story. At its centre is Horton the Elephant’s assertion that "a person’s a person no matter how small". Obviously, these are words to live by. They are also a call to action for young people – to think and care about those who are sometimes forgotten or unseen. We hope Seussical inspires all audience members, young and not so young, to be conscious of the impact of their actions. Think how much better the world would be. To quote another song from the show "Oh the thinks you can think – if you’re willing to try..." Our show runs through the Holidays with public performances every day between December 27th and 31st. Perhaps you know someone for whom Seussical tickets would make a great gift! We wish you the very best for the Holidays and the New Year to come. ALLEN MACINNIS NANCY J.
