A NOTE FROM THE Director

Seussical Jr. is a musical composed by Stephen Flaherty and lyricist Lynn Ahrens based on the works by Dr. Seuss. The full-length musical debuted on Broadway in 2000. The plot is a mash-up of a bunch of Dr. Seuss books, with the bulk of the story coming from “Horton Hears a Who,” “Horton Hatches an Egg,” and “The One Feath- ered Tail of Gertrude McFuzz.” With the Cat in the Hat as the narrator, audiences are transported from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, as we follow the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. “A person’s a person, no matter how small,” becomes Horton’s mantra as he vows to protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers. He also agrees to guard an egg that’s been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger and a trial, Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ulti- mately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant! May we learn something from Horton; we are not “Alone in the Universe,” but here to help each other and make a difference in each other’s lives.
