Once all of these Epic's have come out, I'd like to go back and reread all them in order. I'm not a fan of rereads, but this title has been really good all along. At this point, I've read enough Cap that I really know his world, and his supporting cast. When Bernie comes back with the intent to get back together with Steve, I feel for her, and him! It's a shame so much of the Captain America Epic Collection: Streets of Poison stuff is out of print because I'd really love to get the whole thing! This is another "classic" Gruenwald Cap story that manages to be fun despite a lot of elements that date it pretty firmly to it's late 80's setting. Rom Lim's clean, gorgeous art helps, as always. Despite mediocre annual that caps off the trade, this is a fun collection. Aug 02, Jon rated it it was ok Shelves: reviewed. I'm not on drugs! I'm Captain America Blast It! Nearly every issue devotes the last third to a back up story about some one else Diamondback an almost girlfriend, U. We are treated to Cap fighting the best named street hoods ever. Mouse meat and lowlife just the two Captain America Epic Collection: Streets of Poison memorable, but all Captain America Epic Collection: Streets of Poison them are essentially named dirtbag bad guy at this point I can't remember if dirtbag was one of their names or not, but I am leaning toward yes. Cap accidentally becomes a drug addict, some guy who works for him nonaccidentally does, and hand are wrung over whether or not his super soldier serum is a "drug". There are a few covers in the collection which bear special mention. The first shows an ice covered man surfing on ice just like Iceman with the caption "guess who? I mean couldn't they have pretended that Forge or Banshee or someone less lame was going to be inside? The second notable cover includes the tag line U. Agent is here to save the day--NOT. Which is just wonderful. In one of the many back up stories we are treated to a group of villains named the Power Tools! This book sinks so low as to create a second construction themed group of bands for the marvel universe. I really hope to see them on the big screen in the BattleStar movie BattleStar being one of the many back up stars. This book is recommended for anyone considering taking "ice", fans of Jack Frost, people who want to read about guys that work for Captain America, and Borat. Dec 26, Bill Kte'pi rated it it was ok. Ron Lim's artwork is still as amazing as it was then - action-packed and leaping off the page. Mark Gruenwald is one of the all-time best Cap writers, and this collection features Daredevil, Bullseye, Black Widow, the Kingpin, Red Skull, and some of the best Cap-Crossbones fights you'll ever see. While these are solid comics, they're more problematic than Gruenwald's earlier issues on the title. The titular Streets of Poison issues have a great subplot about a turf war between the Kingpin and the Red Skull, but the main plot is a very obvious anti-drug screed, which ends with a horrible comparison of the Super Soldier Serum with street drugs. • Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

A major critique of the genre is that it simply represents an adolescent male power fantasy; and presents a world view that valorises masculinist individualism.

  • Limits, Malice and the Immortal Hulk
https://lthj.qut.edu.au/ LAW, TECHNOLOGY AND HUMANS Volume 2 (2) 2020 https://doi.org/10.5204/lthj.1581 Before the Law: Limits, Malice and The Immortal Hulk Neal Curtis The University of Auckland, New Zealand Abstract This article uses Kafka's short story 'Before the Law' to offer a reading of Al Ewing's The Immortal Hulk. This is in turn used to explore our desire to encounter the Law understood as a form of completeness. The article differentiates between 'the Law' as completeness or limitlessness and 'the law' understood as limitation. The article also examines this desire to experience completeness or limitlessness in the work of George Bataille who argued such an experience was the path to sovereignty. In response it also considers Francois Flahault's critique of Bataille who argued Bataille failed to understand limitlessness is split between a 'good infinite' and a 'bad infinite', and that it is only the latter that can ultimately satisfy us. The article then proposes The Hulk, especially as presented in Al Ewing's The Immortal Hulk, is a study in where our desire for limitlessness can take us. Ultimately it proposes we turn ourselves away from the Law and towards the law that preserves and protects our incompleteness. Keywords: Law; sovereignty; comics; superheroes; The Hulk Introduction From Jean Bodin to Carl Schmitt, the foundation of the law, or what we more readily understand as sovereignty, is marked by a significant division. The law is a limit in the sense of determining what is permitted and what is proscribed, but the authority for this limit is often said to derive from something unlimited.

Key Words: Captain America, Watergate, Reagan, Marvel The Captain America of the Golden Age of Comics 1: In 1940, Jacob Kurtzberg (who will be known as Jack Kirby later) and Joe Simon invented the character of Steve Rogers, a young American, frail, weak, who wasn’t able to fight for his country despite his strong patriotism and his will to protect the free world from the evil Axis. Recruited by an exiled German scientist, Doctor Eskrine, he became a guinea pig for the Project Rebirth, a mysterious secret program for the US military. Injected with the serum of the super-soldier, infused with “vita-rays”, Steve Rogers became Captain America. Stronger and faster that any athlete, proud of his nation, inheritor of the words of the Founding Fathers, brave and patriot, Captain America was the embodiment of the American Dream. The character was first and foremost, like Simon and Kirby themselves admitted 2, a propaganda superhero whose mission was plain and simple: take part in the war effort and become a symbol of unity among the public opinion.

Scourge returns...againBy Brian ReavesI loved seeing Scourge when he first showed up years ago in Captain America comics. Then Jack Munroe (Nomad) was drafted and the character was brought back in a cool new way. Borrowing from that feeling, this collection of Cap issues again gives us Scourge, and continually hints to the reader that it's someone Cap knows. He wastes several bad guys, and by the end we find out it is indeed an old Cap ally that has now become this super-villain killer. Unfortunately, the entire thing felt a little rushed, and there was never really any good justification given as to why the person who became Scourge this time was chosen other than to hurt Cap. Also, when this puppy ends, it ENDS. There's no slow build up to the climax of the story...it just happens and is over.
