So my mind raced back to an event in my own life in 1964, almost a half-century ago. At the age of 14, I read an Ann Landers col- umn that included a letter from a woman who feared her son might be a “homosexual,” which was a word I’d never seen or heard before. I was curious, albeit a little alarmed. So I went to the Wichita Falls City Library to look in the giant dictionary on the wooden stand to find my answer. (The dictionary at home and the ones in high school English class had no mention of “homosexuality” in those days.) At the library, I seem to remember, I read the words “sexual attraction to members of the same sex ” just before I nearly fainted. I don’t think I was ready to be openly gay at that point. A couple of years later, I recall seeing several members of the Mattachine Society on televi- sion, wearing dark glasses and carrying signs in front of the White House as they demanded equal rights. Considering the sunglasses they used to disguise their identities, I don’t think they were being all that open about it either, even though what they were doing was incred- ibly courageous. It would be 1969 in Dallas before I ever heard the word “gay” or learned there was such a thing as a “gay bar.” After I first discovered where the gay bars were in Dallas — which to my amazement were in the Oak Lawn neighborhood where I rented my first apartment — I, at first, steered clear of

When Gregory King prepares for the final stretch of his master’s degree plan, he won’t be writing up a thesis the way most students might. Instead, he’ll be watching three dancers interpret his vision. And if it’s done right, King’s master of fine arts degree will be in sight — and perhaps some eyes will be opened, too. On the precipice of getting his dance degree from Southern Methodist University, King took a decidedly unsafe route in preparing his thesis, ti- tled Spit. Despite the school’s conservative repu- tation, he couldn’t help but use his final work to make a statement about homophobia and “het- erosexism.” When he presented the idea, he hoped his 20- page proposal would make the concept clear and welcome. “I wasn’t sure if it was going to fly,” King says. “SMU is so highly conservative but this is very much about my life and experience as a black gay man. It’s an honest piece.” After the pitch, he says the room was silent, but it played itself out more successfully than he anticipated. The faculty accepted the proposal, but there was the little catch of actually perform- ing it. And even King didn’t know how it was going to play out onstage. When you talk to Rocio Aranda, you can’t escape her eyes. They are intense with a penetrating stare. Aranda is one serious woman. That’s a result of her devotion to changing the world — even from her lit- tle corner in Denton. And her goal is to do that through her music as Immigrant Punk. Aranda could be the first musician to mix her Mexican heritage of folk music with a kind of hip-hop laced with a spir- itual optimism as a woman and gay. She’s punk and traditional. But that lack of definition may be her best asset. “I write about anything you can think of that inspires you,” she says. Born in Mexico, Aranda settled in Texas with her family at age 14. [headline of positive review] Itʼs hard not to love [title of show], a wildly referential musical about two guys writing a musi- cal for a theater competition. The concept is bril- liant, the cast is cheek-pinchingly adorable and the theater-in-the-round production is ideally suited to the intimate nature of the action. The story follows theater geeks Jeff (Alexan- der Ross) and Hunter (Chad Peterson) as they face a last-minute deadline to get a new musical into a festival. Without a solid direction, they de- cide to chronicle the process of writing the musi- cal theyʼre submitting. Assisted by their talented friends Susan (Marianne Galloway), Heidi (Tricia Ponsford) and accompanist Larry (Terry Dob- son), they incorporate every Broadway conven- tion into their show to ensure its ultimate crowd-pleasability. And to everyoneʼs surprise, the show becomes a hit. There are dozens of obscure insider jokes to please avid theater fans, but not so many that it alienates those who donʼt have a storage bin in their closets filled with Playbills. The musical numbers convey the angst of young adults trying to make their way in the world, as they overcome adversity and self-doubt, all of which is masked with hilarious lyrics and purposefully cliché chore- ography. Watching Peterson do “jazz hands” for an entire song is achingly funny, as is most of this well-directed production. And any show that seamlessly incorporates vampires, Rice Krispie treats and every failed production in Broadway history into its plot deserves every bit of praise heaped upon it. [title of show] is a [well-chosen adjective] and [enthusiastic recommendation]. — Steven Lindsey Theatre 3, 2900 Routh St. in the Quadrangle. Through May 23. Theatre3Dallas.com.

CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY By Jack Fertig JANE’S WORLD Lance Bass turns 31 on Tuesday. Bass has gone from teeny bopping N’Syncer into the go-to guy for TV show guest stars and reality show contestants. But he charmed us the most when he came out to People magazine in 2006. But it did sting a little when he missed the top spot in sea- son seven of Dancing with the Stars.

TAURUS Apr 20-May 20 Celebrate your birthday with your family and creative friends — not necessarily at the same party. Bringing them together may get catalytic. This could be a good thing, or not. Think it through.

GEMINI May 21-Jun 20 Meditation will cool your heated brain and help you keep out of trouble. In that solitude, think of ways your home life can support your ambitions. They don’t have to be at war with each other.

CANCER Jun 21-Jul 22 Showing off to your friends can get costly. If love and admiration aren’t enough, home-baked cookies should do. If they want more, they’re not really friends, and aren’t worth the trouble.

LEO Jul 23-Aug 22 Whatever you do is sure to get noticed. That can be a mixed blessing. Humility would be in order, but that doesn’t mean denying your accomplishments. Just keep perspective.

VIRGO Aug 23-Sep 22 Your brain wants a challenge. Find it in a book; don’t go picking arguments. If you want a good debate, hold yourself back and make an effort to really hear what the other person has to say.

LIBRA Sep 23-Oct 22 Trying to keep up with peer pressure, you could worry yourself sick. Balance? It means they have to meet you half way, too. Your real friends will do that. Standing your ground is sexy.

SCORPIO Oct 23-Nov 21 Immediate concerns feel like distractions from your creative en- gagement with the world. Those details are exactly how we do that. Try to channel that aggravation into creative energy.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 22-Dec 20 Domestic drama threatens to disrupt your plans at work. If you can keep an even keel, handling those unpredictable upsets could help you gain confidence in your managerial skills.

CAPRICORN Dec 21-Jan 19 Maintain respect for people even when their questions are abysmally stupid. It is tempting to mess with their heads, or to mock them, but mellow out that playful streak and engage them.

AQUARIUS Jan 20-Feb 18 Everybody needs to be concerned about money these days. You may be more worried than necessary. Don’t take it out on any- one. Discussion will get your problems into perspective.

PISCES Feb 19-Mar 19 Flaws and frustrations in your relationship are feeling worse than they really are. Make a list now to discuss later. If you must trash someone, that is what politicians and celebrities are for.

ARIES Mar 20-Apr 19 Your competitive drive can be obsessive, even self-destructive. Looking good is about moving on gracefully. Let go. You can’t do that while guarding your turf as queen of the mountain.
