Insect, cold hardiness, strategies, Freezing tolerance, Freeze intolerance Abstract. Insect cold tolerance mechanisms are often divided into freezing tolerance and freeze intolerance. This division has been criticised in recent years; Bale (1996) established five categories of cold tolerance. In Bale’s view, freezing tolerance is at the ex­ treme end of the spectrum o f cold tolerance, and represents insects which are most able to survive low temperatures. Data in the lit­ erature from 53 species o f freezing tolerant insects suggest that the freezing tolerance strategies o f these species are divisible into four groups according to supercooling point (SCP) and lower lethal temperature (LLT): (1) Partially Freezing Tolerant-species that survive a small proportion o f their body water converted into ice, (2) Moderately Freezing Tolerant-species die less than ten degrees below their SCP, (3) Strongly Freezing Tolerant-insects with LLTs 20 degrees or more below their SCP, and (4) Freezing Tolerant Species with Low Supercooling Points which freeze at very low temperatures, and can survive a few degrees below their SCP. The last 3 groups can survive the conversion of body water into ice to an equilibrium at sub-lethal environmental temperatures. Statistical analyses o f these groups are presented in this paper. However, the data set is small and biased, and there are many other aspects o f freezing tolerance, for example proportion o f body water frozen, and site o f ice nucleation, so these categories may have to be re­ vised in the future.

    Cochylini del 2 Agapeta, Eupoecilia, Aethes (part.) Agapeta hamana (L.) 4268 15-25 mm. Imago flyver sidst på dagen og kommer fint til lys fra maj til august (september). Ikke alle eksem- plarer er så stærkt tegnet som ovenstående. Agapeta hamana (L.) Larven lever overvintrende i i rødderne af forskellige tidsler (Carduus, Cirsium mv.). Udbredt i Europa op til Mellemsverige og Finland. Almindelig. Agapeta largana (Rebel) 4270 16-23 mm. Imago er på vingerne i solens sidste stråler fra sidst i juni gennem juli. Lokalt ikke sjælden på enge. Præimaginale stadier er ukendte. Kendt fra Grækenland, Rumænien, Ungarn, det vestlige Østrig og jeg har selv fundet den flere steder i det sydøstlige Frankrig. Agapeta zoegana (L.) 4271 15-24 mm. Imago flyver i de sidste lyse timer og kommer fint til lys i juli-august. Agapeta zoegana (L.) Larven lever overvintrende i rødderne af Blåhat (Knautia) og Knopurt (Centaurea). Den forpupper sig i rødderne. Agapeta zoegana (L.) Ind i mellem dukker eksemplarer op som er formørket i den yderste tredjedel. Disse eksemparer er gerne mindre end normalt. Agapeta zoegana (L.) I Danmark er der ikke mange findesteder i Jylland og arten mangler helt vest for israndslinjen. I det øvrige land er den ikke sjælden, men sjældent talrig. Nordgrænsen går gennem det sydligste Norge, mellemste Sverige og sydlige Finland. Arten når til Ural og Lilleasien. Eugnosta lathoniana (Hb.) 4279 21-27 mm. Imago flyver sidst på dagen fra midt i maj til sidst i juni. Præimaginale stadier er ukendte. Udbredt i det meste af Sydeuropa, mod nord til Tyskland, men herfra kendes ingen konkrete fund.

  • The Associations Between Pteridophytes and Arthropods
    FERN GAZ. 12(1) 1979 29 THE ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN PTERIDOPHYTES AND ARTHROPODS URI GERSON The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Faculty of Agriculture, Rehovot, Israel. ABSTRACT Insects belonging to 12 orders, as well as mites, millipedes, woodlice and tardigrades have been collected from Pterldophyta. Primitive and modern, as well as general and specialist arthropods feed on pteridophytes. Insects and mites may cause slight to severe damage, all plant parts being susceptible. Several arthropods are pests of commercial Pteridophyta, their control being difficult due to the plants' sensitivity to pesticides. Efforts are currently underway to employ insects for the biological control of bracken and water ferns. Although Pteridophyta are believed to be relatively resistant to arthropods, the evidence is inconclusive; pteridophyte phytoecdysones do not appear to inhibit insect feeders. Other secondary compounds of preridophytes, like prunasine, may have a more important role in protecting bracken from herbivores. Several chemicals capable of adversely affecting insects have been extracted from Pteridophyta. The litter of pteridophytes provides a humid habitat for various parasitic arthropods, like the sheep tick. Ants often abound on pteridophytes (especially in the tropics) and may help in protecting these plants while nesting therein. These and other associations are discussed . lt is tenatively suggested that there might be a difference in the spectrum of arthropods attacking ancient as compared to modern Pteridophyta. The Osmundales, which, in contrast to other ancient pteridophytes, contain large amounts of ·phytoecdysones, are more similar to modern Pteridophyta in regard to their arthropod associates. The need for further comparative studies is advocated, with special emphasis on the tropics.

    Gredleriana Vol. 7 / 2007 pp. 233 - 306 Biodiversität von Schmetterlingen (Lepidoptera) im Gebiet des Naturparks Schlern Peter Huemer Abstract Biodiversity of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) of the Schlern nature park (South Tyrol, Italy) The species diversity of Lepidoptera within the Schlern nature park has been explored during the vegetation periods 2006 and 2007. Altogether 1030 species have been observed in 16 sites, covering about one third of the entire fauna from the province of South Tyrol. Fifteen additional species have been collected during the diversity day 2006 whereas further 113 species date back to historical explorations. The species inventory includes 20 new records for South Tyrol which are briefly reviewed. Among these speciesMicropterix osthelderi, Rhigognostis incarnatella and Cydia cognatana are the first proved records from Italy. Further two species from the surroundings of the Park include the first published records ofPhyllonorycter issikii and Gelechia sestertiella for Italy. Site specific characteristics of Lepidoptera coenosis are discussed in some detail. Historical aspects of lepidopterological exploration of the Schlern are briefly introduced. Einleitung Der Schlern übt als einer der klassischen Dolomitengipfel schon weit über 100 Jahre eine geradezu magische Anziehungskraft auf Naturwissenschaftler unterschiedlichster Coleurs aus (Abb. 1). Seine Nähe zum Siedlungsraum und vor allem die damit verbundene relativ leichte Erreichbarkeit haben wohl zur Motivation mehrerer Forschergenerationen beigetragen, das Gebiet näher zu untersuchen. Zusätzlich war wohl die Arbeit von GREDLER (1863) über Bad Ratzes für manchen Entomologen ein Anlass die Fauna des Schlerns näher unter die Lupe zu nehmen. Dies gilt auch für Schmetterlinge, wo erste Aufsammlungen bereits in die Mitte des 19.

    Review of butterfly, moth and other natural history sightings 2019 January January started dry and settled but mostly cloudy with high pressure dominant, and it remained generally dry and often mild during the first half of the month. The second half became markedly cooler with overnight frosts and the last week saw a little precipitation, some which was occasionally wintry. With the mild weather continuing from December 2018 there were a small number of migrant moths noted in January, comprising a Dark Sword-grass at Seabrook on the 5th, a Silver Y there on the 13th and 2 Plutella xylostella (Diamond-back Moths) there on the 15th, whilst a very unseasonal Dark Arches at Hythe on the 4th may have been of immigrant origin. Dark Sword-grass at Seabrook (Paul Howe) Dark Arches at Hythe (Ian Roberts) More typical species involved Epiphyas postvittana (Light Brown Apple Moth), Satellite, Mottled Umber, Winter Moth, Chestnut, Spring Usher and Early Moth. Early Moth at Seabrook (Paul Howe) Spring Usher at Seabrook (Paul Howe) The only butterfly noted was a Red Admiral at Nickolls Quarry on the 1st but the mild weather encouraged single Buff-tailed Bumblebees to appear at Seabrook on the 7th and Mill Point on the 8th, whilst a Minotaur Beetle was attracted to light at Seabrook on the 6th. A Common Seal and two Grey Seals were noted regularly off Folkestone, whilst at Hare was seen near Botolph’s Bridge on the 1st and a Mink was noted there on the 17th. February After a cold start to the month it was generally mild from the 5th onwards.

In medicine and cosmetology, leeches, fish, insect larvae, mucus fromH. aspersa snail, bee products are used. Among them, ichthyotherapy - therapy with the use of Garra rufa (Heckel 1843), which is gaining popularity not only in the exotic resorts of Turkey, Iran and Jordan, but also in Poland, deserves attention. In view of the growing interest in ichthyotherapy, the question arises: Are cosmetic and therapeutic procedures using this vertebrate completely safe for humans? This question became a contribution to taking up this topic of study. Ichthyotherapy is the use of freshwater, sedentary benthopelagic fish of the cyprinid family, red garra (G. rufa), commercially referred to as “the doctor fish”. This fish has a suction apparatus that allows removal of calloused epidermis in patients undergoing therapy. This treatment has been used mainly in cosmetics as so-called fish pedicure, but also in medicine. Scientific reports indicate that this fish may be helpful in treating some skin diseases, i.e. in alleviating the symptoms of psoriasis or atopic dermatitis. Treatments using the red garra have to be performed in full compliance with hygiene rules. In 2011, the British Health Protect Agency (BHPA) published the guidelines for carrying out treatments using these fish. It specified the indications and contraindications for performing the procedure, the way it should be performed, as well as the threats that could result from possible non-compliance with the principles of occupational health and safety during the procedures.

    Argyresthia laevigatella – larikspedaalmot (Lepidoptera: Argyresthiidae), nieuw voor de Belgische fauna Steve Wullaert Samenvatting. Tijdens de 2de excursie van de Werkgroep Bladmineerders in het Wijnendalebos te Torhout (West- Vlaanderen) op 26.vi.2010 vonden we een Argyresthiidae waarvan we lange tijd niet wisten om welke soort het ging. Het exemplaar werd op genitaliën gecontroleerd en gedetermineerd als Argyresthia laevigatella Herrich-Schäffer, 1855. Gegevens over de verspreiding en de biologie van de soort worden meegedeeld. Abstract. During the 2nd excursion of the Workgroup Leafminers in the forest Wijnendalebos at Torhout (West-Flanders) on 26.vi.2010 we found an Argyresthiidae that remained unidentified for a long time. Recently the specimen was dissected and determined as Argyresthia laevigatella Herrich-Schäffer, 1855. Data about its distribution and biology are given. Résumé. Lors de la 2ème excursion de notre groupe de travail dans le Wijnendalebos à Torhout (Flandre Occidentale) le 26.vi.2010, nous avons trouvé un Argyresthiidae que nous n'avons pas pu identifier immédiatement. L'exemplaire a été contrôlé et déterminé ultérieurement comme Argyresthia laevigatella Herrich-Schäffer, 1855 sur base des analyses des genitalia. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006).
