  • His Highness Arvind Singh Mewar Would Be Very Grateful If You
INTRODUCTION Tod evidently knew so much at fi rst hand; he read everything bearing on his subject that he could come across, and he wrote it all down with such honesty of purpose and in so entertaining a style that he produced a classic: and classics are apt to be dangerous things …1 “His Highness Arvind Singh Mewar would be very grateful if you could telephone him as soon as possible …” A messenger from the calling booth near my apartment in Jaipur delivered the fax on a hot aft ernoon in late March. I had met Shri Arvind Singh two weeks earlier at one of his hotels in Bikaner. He had graciously made time for a private meet- ing to discuss my work on James Tod and invited me to lunch with a Brazilian polo player he was recruiting for his team, his English media consultant and his daughter—a daunting crowd, and not the company in which I typically fi nd myself. Because he was the “Mahārānā,”̣ were such titles still possible, I wanted to learn what he knew of Tod. He had a reputation for being well disposed towards scholars, and I harbored the hope that he might have a cache of materials in his possession, or at least family lore that would be of use to me. Th ere was no archive, but he was friendly, inter- ested, and very supportive of my work. I went quickly to return his call and found that he had a task for me. His trust, the Maharana Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF) every year gives out a series of awards to individuals who exemplify the ide- als that the foundation was instituted to support.

  • Life Story of Maharana Pratap August 2017 Savior of Liberty and Self-Respect
Life Story of Maharana Pratap August 2017 Savior of Liberty and self-respect, ‘Hindua Suraj’ - Maharana Pratap ‘Shesha naag sir sehas paye, dhar rakhi khud aap, Ik bhala ri nok pai, thay dhabi partap!’ – Ram Singh Solanki Meaning: Shesh –the remainder, that which remains when all else cease to exist. Naag - Serpent. Shesha Naag is said to hold the planets of the universe on his hoods. He has to use his thousand hoods to protect and stabilize the unstable earth. But, Oh Pratap! You stabilized and protected the entire motherland, solely on the tip of your spear. Where the Snake God held the Earth on its thousands of heads; there, Oh! Brave Maharana Pratap, you have not only held your land on the tip of your spear but also used the strength of your spears to protect it. Maharana Pratap was the hundred and fourth heir of the great Sun dynasty ‘Suryavansh’. The Kings of erstwhile India were divided into two dynastic categories namely ‘Suryavanshi’ and ‘Chandravanshi’ based on the Sun and Moon Gods respectively. Mythological texts and manuscripts also refer to these two dynasties in which the ‘Suryavanshi’ Kings hold greater significance. This ‘Suryavansh’ dynasty was later known as ‘Rughavansh’ dynasty tracing its ancestry to ‘Surya’ the Sun God. The incarnation of Lord Rama, destroyer of the malevolent demon Ravana also occurred in the ‘Suryavanshi’ dynasty and it is believed that the Kingdom of Mewar originated from Luv, the elder son of Rama. This dynastic tradition continued with the birth of the popular King Guhaditya/Guhil in 568 CE and the dynasty was thus referred to as ‘Guhilvansh’/’Guhilot’ with ‘Rawal’ as its title.

  • On Music Gallery
'Symphony of Mewar' A Royal Collection of Musical Instruments The royal family of Me w a r h a s a l w a y s provided patronage to the continuation of the age- old traditions of music in the State of Mewar. The Maharanas themselves were passionate lovers of music, art and literature thus showing the softer and gentle pursuits in their warrior lives. Owing to their love for music, a special place called Naubat Khana for the Shahnaai players and the Nakkar Khana for the Nakkarchis were built. They performed daily at sunrise and sunset. The multifaceted ruler of Mewar, Rana Kumbha (r. 1433-1468), built the strongest foundations for Indian classical music and emerged as one of the greatest and most valuable proponents. Acclaimed as 'Sangeet Shiromani', he wrote an outstanding treatise on Indian music titled 'Sangeet-Raj'. This magnum opus of the medieval world has over 16000 shlokas or couplets. It is considered not only a pioneering and path breaking scholarly work on Indian classical music but is often venerated as the fifth Veda. He also wrote 'Sangeet Ratnakar', 'Vadhya Prabandh', 'Sur Prabandh' and 'Geet Govind ki Rasik Priya'. The classification of Prabandh Gayan, which is Rana Kumbha's greatest contribution to the world of Indian classical music, demonstrates the warrior king's in-depth knowledge and mastery over the genre. After merger of the State of Mewar with the Republic of India, Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar of Udaipur (r. 1955-1984) maintained the tradition of the conservation and perpetuation of the arts and cultural activities in Mewar.
