“Consider the Source” A Resource Guide to Liberal, Conservative and Nonpartisan Periodicals 30 East Lake Street ∙ Chicago, IL 60601 HWC Library – Room 501 312.553.5760 ver heard the saying “consider the source” in response to something that was questioned? Well, the same advice applies to what you read – consider the source. When conducting research, bear in mind that periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers) may have varying points-of-view, biases, and/or E political leanings. Here are some questions to ask when considering using a periodical source: Is there a bias in the publication or is it non-partisan? Who is the sponsor (publisher or benefactor) of the publication? What is the agenda of the sponsor – to simply share information or to influence social or political change? Some publications have specific political perspectives and outright state what they are, as in Dissent Magazine (self-described as “a magazine of the left”) or National Review’s boost of, “we give you the right view and back it up.” Still, there are other publications that do not clearly state their political leanings; but over time have been deemed as left- or right-leaning based on such factors as the points- of-view of their opinion columnists, the make-up of their editorial staff, and/or their endorsements of politicians. Many newspapers fall into this rather opaque category. A good rule of thumb to use in determining whether a publication is liberal or conservative has been provided by Media Research Center’s L. Brent Bozell III: “if the paper never met a conservative cause it didn’t like, it’s conservative, and if it never met a liberal cause it didn’t like, it’s liberal.” Outlined in the following pages is an annotated listing of publications that have been categorized as conservative, liberal, non-partisan and religious. -

Who Set the Narrative? Assessing the Influence of Chinese Media in News Coverage of COVID-19 in 30 African Countries The size of China’s State-owned media’s operations in Africa has grown significantly since the early 2000s. Previous research on the impact of increased Sino-African mediated engagements has been inconclusive. Some researchers hold that public opinion towards China in African nations has been improving because of the increased media presence. Others argue that the impact is rather limited, particularly when it comes to affecting how African media cover China- related stories. This paper seeks to contribute to this debate by exploring the extent to which news media in 30 African countries relied on Chinese news sources to cover China and the COVID-19 outbreak during the first half of 2020. By computationally analyzing a corpus of 500,000 news stories, I show that, compared to other major global players (e.g. Reuters, AFP), content distributed by Chinese media (e.g. Xinhua, China Daily, People’s Daily) is much less likely to be used by African news organizations, both in English and French speaking countries. The analysis also reveals a gap in the prevailing themes in Chinese and African media’s coverage of the pandemic. The implications of these findings for the sub-field of Sino-African media relations, and the study of global news flows is discussed. Having coined “O’Bama” for the Irish working-class values that Joe Biden brings to the Democratic ticket, Chris Matthews called his family in Pennsylvania — where Scranton-born Biden is known as the state’s “third senator” in some quarters — to ask whether now they’d be voting for Obama. “But he’s a Muslim!” That’s the reply Matthews told his viewers he got. The Matthews clan is not alone. Going into the Democratic National Convention, depending on which poll you read, somewhere between 10 percent and 15 percent of American voters thought that Obama is a Muslim. A Newsweek poll found that 26 percent thought he was raised as a Muslim (untrue), and 39 percent thought he grew up going to an Islamic school in Indonesia (also untrue). I’m not shocked by Americans’ ability to think untrue things. After all, under the relentless tutelage of the Bush administration and its media enablers, nearly 70 percent of the country thought that Saddam Hussein was personally involved in planning the Sept. 11 attack. In fact, if you told me that double-digit percentages of voters believe that Jewish workers were warned to stay home on Sept. 11, or that the American landing on the moon was faked, or that every one of the words of the Bible is literally and absolutely true, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised. -

The lists are compiled by the House and Senate press galleries. (The list for the current Congress will not be available for several months.) For the purposes of this list, we defined the trade press narrowly, excluding congressional newspapers such as The Hill and Roll Call. (We also would have excluded ourselves, but The Politico began publishing during this session of Congress.) We also excluded most of the financial press unless the publication was tailored to bond traders or another very specific sector. Finally, we included what's referred to as the newsletter press, such as BNA. POLITICAL REPORTING IN THE AGE OF INFOTAINMENT Melissa Oribhabor Jennifer Rowe, Committee Chair August 2014 Introduction The effects of infotainment have been felt by the news industry since politicians started appearing on talK shows and comedy shows, hoping to humanize themselves to the voting public. One of the earliest examples was in 1968 when presidential candidate Richard Nixon appeared on “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” (Xenos 198). Even earlier than that, John F. Kennedy appeared on the “The Tonight Show” with Jack Paar in 1960. But with the 24-hour news cycle and the Internet drawing the public away from traditional forms of news, infotainment has become even more prevalent during the past 30 years. Infotainment can be seen easily on television, with programs such as “The Daily Show” and CNN’s “RidicuList” with Anderson Cooper; however, infotainment in terms of print journalism has not been studied as in- depth. This research not only looks at infotainment in print journalism but more specifically how it affects political journalists. Literature Review Moy, Xenos and Hess in their 2005 article “Communication and Citizenship: Mapping the Political Effects of Infotainment” define infotainment as the convergence of news and entertainment. The paper states that in recent years news programs started developing more elements of entertainment, and entertainment programs started to disseminate the news. The term “infotainment” is largely used in reference to entertainment programs that have elements of news (Moy et. al. 2005, 113). “Soft news” and “infotainment” are often used interchangeably in research on this topic. Soft news includes sensationalized stories, human-interest stories, and stories that focus more on entertainment over serious hard news content (Jebril et. -

JoHN mNRY LEwnv* HE recent application of the Sherman Act to the restrictions on membership by newspapers in the Associated Press' constituted a cause c~lebre primarily because of the prevailing public interest in the subject matter of the litigation. The case may well retain that status for some time to come for another reason as well, namely, implications contained in the majority opinion of the Supreme Court-suggestions which seem to extend the reach of both substantive sections2 of the statute as hitherto understood by antitrust lawyers. A full appreciation of the facts involved should cause no surprise as to the result of the case. The activities of the Associated Press, which were finally condemned, can so readily be fitted into the pattern of illegal restraints fashioned by former decisions that the marvel would seem to be that they could have escaped with immunity so long and that their dispatch should have involved such travail and contrariety of view by the judges who passed upon them. 3 The * The writer, a member of the Baltimore bar, was, prior to March 15, 1944, first assistant to the head of the Department of Justice's Antitrust Division, and counsel for the Government in the Associated Press case. x United States v.
