He lived here on and off, recorded here, and has family here. His memorial service was held at Lewis Ginter. I never had the privilege of meeting the man, so to me Mark Linkous is this mystery figure. A man who was in the depths of despair but could write these beautiful songs, It’s easy to become obsessed with the past when you live not much different from how I seem to be focusing on those in Church Hill. Levon, that paragon of genteel southern charm, has always been my touchstone for how a humbled Southern musician should act: well-mannered, gracious, soft-spoken, lacking hubris. There’s another great fallen southern musician to whom I attribute these same qualities, one that Richmond and Church Hill particularly can claim: Mark Linkous. Mark Linkous released five records under the band name Sparklehorse before tragically taking his own life in March of 2010. A few of his early records were made on a mysterious farm he owned between Richmond and Char- lottesville. His songs are full of southern iconography and are a pastiche of Southern Gothic themes, not unlike that facebook.com/longarmsmusic .com/#!/LongArmsMusic aforementioned really good writer. He often sang in a whisper, an aesthetic, as many aesthetics originate, grounded in necessity: he didn’t want to wake his sleeping wife in the next room. Mark Linkous spoke openly about his depression, insecurities, and his often lack of self-worth.
