Now after a great deal of work - the property has been transformed into a home that is as comfortable and easy to live in, as it is wonderful to look at. “We wanted to live in the countryside but also to have easy access to the city,” they explained. “We were also looking for a house that had lots of character, but as soon as we saw the Thatched Cottage, we knew this was it.” So Much Character They loved the old beams and studwork in the cottage, and the fact that, for a country cottage, it had an unusual amount of headroom. When they first moved in they went through a process of sympathetic restoration. The work carried out was thorough, and ranged from re-ridging the thatch through to stripping out and repairing rotten roof beams, and creating a new outside terraced area. “We had everything done sympathetically, and the cottage has lost none of its original character.” Great For Entertaining The open layout of the ground floor of the Thatched Cottage now makes it ideal for entertaining. The current owners love cooking and the presence of the breakfast room means they are not cut off from their guests. “The layout is fantastic now - it feels very open. If we have friends round we can be cooking and preparing food and still feel part of the party because we can chat to them at the same time,” they said. The sitting room, with its beamed ceiling and inglenook fireplace has become the perfect sanctuary after a busy day at work. Comfortable sofas and stripped wooden floors work with the exposed timbers to create a friendly, informal ambience. “This is a lovely room to be in, especially in the winter; said the owner. “We love lighting the fire and making hot toast on it when the weather is cold and damp outside - or at Christmas, roasting chestnuts.” Care In Decorating All the rooms in the Thatched Cottage have been carefully decorated and furnished to blend with the style of the cottage. Pale creams and shades of white set off the wooden flooring, timber beams and exposed brickwork and pamments. “The furniture is fairly traditional, leather chairs and old wood etc. In the bathroom it was a must to have a free standing bath. “The kitchen and shower room are exceptions to the style we have gone for. It does blend very well with the rest of the cottage but are very modern, with stainless steel splashbacks and modern glass sinks, for example!’ Fruitful Garden Another favourite spot for putting their feet up is the garden. This is a pretty English cottage garden, leafy and green with plenty of places to soak up the sunshine. With a grapevine, a huge walnut tree and three cherry trees, there is plenty of fruit to enjoy as well. “In the summer we use the garden a great deal. We have barbecues on the terrace at the weekends and during the week, after work, we pull the banana hammock out on to the lawn, grab a cold beer or a glass of wine and just lie there until all the stress of the day has disappeared.” Summary This is a very pretty Grade II Listed thatched residence oozing with character and charm.
