The fortunes of all the clubs I’ve ever been involved with have ebbed and flowed and, in fact, the two football clubs I devoted much of my younger life to, Wymondham Old Boys and Wymondham Sunday - both successful in the 1970s and 80s - are no longer in existence. There’s no danger of Great Melton going the same way, but there are lessons to be learned from the 2014 and 2015 seasons. The main problems last year were the result of first team players being unavailable through work changes, re-location, increased family commitments, retirement, injury - all valid reasons - but it took it’s toll on all four senior teams. The break-up of a successful team is not a new phenomenon. It’s happened before at Melton and history shows a couple of ‘lean’ years and a rebuilding process will be followed by more years of success. There is much cause for optimism following the AGM and I wish our senior captains, Olly Harris, Simon Woods, Tony Alborough, Clive Rennie, Tim Hales, Peter Hunt and Chris Elliott the very best of luck as they begin that rebuilding process. The first 4 have a few extra challenges in getting to grips with a new-look Alliance ‘win/lose’ format and a reorganised Norfolk League. Our junior section continues to thrive with the ever-popular Friday coaching sessions and the success of our junior teams but we mustn’t forget that the managers, coaches, and everybody else who helps on Friday evenings are only part of a larger team of unpaid volunteers that keep the Melton juggernaut trundling along. The ECB, and occasionally local leagues, sometimes lose sight of the fact that local clubs are run by volunteers. Perhaps it’s not surprising that people are reluctant to give their time when over-complicated and unnecessary bureaucracy can sometimes make running a cricket club or team rather onerous. We need to cherish our volunteers, never take them for granted, help to make their jobs easier, and plan carefully for the next batch so that there are ready successors when the time comes for the main stalwarts in the club to step aside. A big thank you in advance to all you voluntary helpers. I wish you the very best of luck in carrying out your duties in 2016. In our pursuit of ‘success’ and trophies, we mustn’t forget that we are an amateur, recreational, village cricket club and our main role is to provide an enjoyable game of cricket for as many people as possible. It is understandable that the ‘success’ of a club is often judged by the exploits of the first team and we lament the fact that talented players won’t always ‘commit’ on a regular basis. In truth, though, people are free to choose how they spend their leisure time, nobody can ‘make’ anybody play cricket; there are many other choices out there. We need be open to new competitions, fresh ways of playing the game; we also need to get the balance right between junior and senior competition and seek to be as welcoming as possible to our opponents, families of players, parents of juniors - everybody! We need to make the cricket experience a positive one. The fact is that most Saturdays we enable 44 people to have a game of cricket; we provide cricket for everybody from 6-70; we have women & girls competing at all levels and, this summer, we hope to run sessions for disabled cricketers. We have a lovely ground and a pavilion with a new kitchen that is a real community asset. That, surely is success enough! Anything else (i.e. the occasional trophy) is a bonus. Have a great summer. Following the same format as our drives of 2016, the drive will begin with a social evening at Sudbury on Friday and end with a social at Huntingdon on Saturday, allowing Members from across East Anglia to pop by and say hello to the Club and other regional GRRC Members. Our aim from these events is to get like-minded Members together to enjoy their cars on some of the best roads and most beautiful areas of the UK. With this in mind, we have suggested a route which we believe explores some of the finest roads through Suffolk and Norfolk, but it is very much up to you how to make the most of the day. There are far too many quaint towns and wonderful routes to explore throughout East Anglia, but by using the guide below, we hope you will be able to tailor the day, in the knowledge that there is a group of like-minded GRRC members on the adventure with you. We have also built in plenty of extra time to allow Members to take photos and have rest stops along the way. We will start the weekend with a Friday night social at the Mill Hotel, Sudbury.

Foulsham, Norfolk, England, is a parish and market town on the East Norfolk branch of the Great Eastern Railway. The parish church of the Holy Innocents, a large flint structure, was built about 1489, burnt in 1770, and afterward rebuilt. Its earliest register dates from 1708. This parish and manor gave its name to the Folsom family, or Foulsham, as it was first spelt in New England. Members of this family were found inother parts of England, in the earlier times. Benedictus de Folsham was summoned to the Parliament that met at Lincoln, Sept. 15, 1327, and again to Westminster, Sept. 26, 1337, to represent the city of London. Walter de Berney, an ecclesiastic of Norwich, in his willin 1379 gives John de Folsham and two others forty pounds to prosecute their studies at Oxford. SirRobert Fulsham, clerk of Alholowen, Chichester, Sussex, died in 1502.

    NORFOLK THROUGH A LENS A guide to the Photographic Collections held by Norfolk Library & Information Service 2 NORFOLK THROUGH A LENS A guide to the Photographic Collections held by Norfolk Library & Information Service History and Background The systematic collecting of photographs of Norfolk really began in 1913 when the Norfolk Photographic Survey was formed, although there are many images in the collection which date from shortly after the invention of photography (during the 1840s) and a great deal which are late Victorian. In less than one year over a thousand photographs were deposited in Norwich Library and by the mid- 1990s the collection had expanded to 30,000 prints and a similar number of negatives. The devastating Norwich library fire of 1994 destroyed around 15,000 Norwich prints, some of which were early images. Fortunately, many of the most important images were copied before the fire and those copies have since been purchased and returned to the library holdings. In 1999 a very successful public appeal was launched to replace parts of the lost archive and expand the collection. Today the collection (which was based upon the survey) contains a huge variety of material from amateur and informal work to commercial pictures. This includes newspaper reportage, portraiture, building and landscape surveys, tourism and advertising. There is work by the pioneers of photography in the region; there are collections by talented and dedicated amateurs as well as professional art photographers and early female practitioners such as Olive Edis, Viola Grimes and Edith Flowerdew. More recent images of Norfolk life are now beginning to filter in, such as a village survey of Ashwellthorpe by Richard Tilbrook from 1977, groups of Norwich punks and Norfolk fairs from the 1980s by Paul Harley and re-development images post 1990s.

    Frequently Asked Questions Morningthorpe Recycling Centre Drainage Improvement Works Q. What is happening at Morningthorpe Recycling Centre? A. Morningthorpe Recycling Centre is having essential drainage improvement works and repair work carried out to the hard standing. Q. Why is the work needed? A. To run a waste site we are issued with an environmental permit and there are requirements for effective surface water drainage management. Morningthorpe Recycling Centre is a very old site and the surface water drainage needs upgrading to ensure we remain compliant with the tough regulations which protect the environment from the impact of dealing with waste at the site. The site also needs other essential repair work namely to the hard standing to ensure a safe surface for the public and also to allow bins to be lowered and lifted safely from our lorries. Q. How long will it take? A. The work will start on Tuesday 13th June and will last just under 8 weeks with the site reopening on Saturday 5th August. Q. Why is the work going on during the busy summer? A. A programme of work to upgrade surface water drainage has been ongoing across Norfolk’s Recycling Centres since 2008. Morningthorpe is the final site to be upgraded in the current programme of work. Planning permission was granted in January 2017 and an Environmental Permit was issued in 2016. The works were programmed to avoid the busy Easter and May Bank Holidays with the aim of reopening the site as close to the start of the summer holidays as possible. The work could not be further delayed due to the urgent need for repairs to the hardstanding.

    Parish Registers and Transcripts in the Norfolk Record Office This list summarises the Norfolk Record Office’s (NRO’s) holdings of parish (Church of England) registers and of transcripts and other copies of them. Parish Registers The NRO holds registers of baptisms, marriages, burials and banns of marriage for most parishes in the Diocese of Norwich (including Suffolk parishes in and near Lowestoft in the deanery of Lothingland) and part of the Diocese of Ely in south-west Norfolk (parishes in the deanery of Fincham and Feltwell). Some Norfolk parish records remain in the churches, especially more recent registers, which may be still in use. In the extreme west of the county, records for parishes in the deanery of Wisbech Lynn Marshland are deposited in the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, whilst Welney parish records are at the Cambridgeshire Record Office. The covering dates of registers in the following list do not conceal any gaps of more than ten years; for the populous urban parishes (such as Great Yarmouth) smaller gaps are indicated. Whenever microfiche or microfilm copies are available they must be used in place of the original registers, some of which are unfit for production. A few parish registers have been digitally photographed and the images are available on computers in the NRO's searchroom. The digital images were produced as a result of partnership projects with other groups and organizations, so we are not able to supply copies of whole registers (either as hard copies or on CD or in any other digital format), although in most cases we have permission to provide printout copies of individual entries.
