A Few Words From The Chairman

After many years of almost continuous success, I suppose there was an inevitability about the fact that we have struggled at senior level over the last two seasons. The fortunes of all the clubs I’ve ever been involved with have ebbed and flowed and, in fact, the two football clubs I devoted much of my younger life to, Old Boys and Wymondham Sunday - both successful in the 1970s and 80s - are no longer in existence. There’s no danger of Great Melton going the same way, but there are lessons to be learned from the 2014 and 2015 seasons. The main problems last year were the result of first team players being unavailable through work changes, re-location, increased family commitments, retirement, injury - all valid reasons - but it took it’s toll on all four senior teams. The break-up of a successful team is not a new phenomenon. It’s happened before at Melton and history shows a couple of ‘lean’ years and a rebuilding process will be followed by more years of success. There is much cause for optimism following the AGM and I wish our senior captains, Olly Harris, Simon Woods, Tony Alborough, Clive Rennie, Tim Hales, Peter Hunt and Chris Elliott the very best of luck as they begin that rebuilding process. The first 4 have a few extra challenges in getting to grips with a new-look Alliance ‘win/lose’ format and a reorganised Norfolk League. Our junior section continues to thrive with the ever-popular Friday coaching sessions and the success of our junior teams but we mustn’t forget that the managers, coaches, and everybody else who helps on Friday evenings are only part of a larger team of unpaid volunteers that keep the Melton juggernaut trundling along. The ECB, and occasionally local leagues, sometimes lose sight of the fact that local clubs are run by volunteers. Perhaps it’s not surprising that people are reluctant to give their time when over-complicated and unnecessary bureaucracy can sometimes make running a cricket club or team rather onerous. We need to cherish our volunteers, never take them for granted, help to make their jobs easier, and plan carefully for the next batch so that there are ready successors when the time comes for the main stalwarts in the club to step aside. A big thank you in advance to all you voluntary helpers. I wish you the very best of luck in carrying out your duties in 2016. In our pursuit of ‘success’ and trophies, we mustn’t forget that we are an amateur, recreational, village cricket club and our main role is to provide an enjoyable game of cricket for as many people as possible. It is understandable that the ‘success’ of a club is often judged by the exploits of the first team and we lament the fact that talented players won’t always ‘commit’ on a regular basis. In truth, though, people are free to choose how they spend their leisure time, nobody can ‘make’ anybody play cricket; there are many other choices out there. We need be open to new competitions, fresh ways of playing the game; we also need to get the balance right between junior and senior competition and seek to be as welcoming as possible to our opponents, families of players, parents of juniors - everybody! We need to make the cricket experience a positive one. The fact is that most Saturdays we enable 44 people to have a game of cricket; we provide cricket for everybody from 6-70; we have women & girls competing at all levels and, this summer, we hope to run sessions for disabled cricketers. We have a lovely ground and a pavilion with a new kitchen that is a real community asset. That, surely is success enough! Anything else (i.e. the occasional trophy) is a bonus. Have a great summer. Steve Wulugu Project does make a difference And you can help.

Donations to Wulugu Project, Church Farm, Great Melton, NR9 3BH…………..would be much appreciated.

Great Melton C. C. History in Brief

Great Melton CC was formed in 1974, and for the first four seasons played evening friendly and some cup matches, all on opponent’s grounds, generally with borrowed kit. In 1977 the club won its first silverware – The Cup. In 1978 the club secured a home pitch at Eaton Park and a year later moved to Browick Road Recreation ground in Wymondham, entering the newly formed Division 6 of the Norfolk Cricket League in 1980. A return to Eaton Park in 1985 began a four year success period, with Melton winning Divisions 4,3 and 2 in consecutive seasons, becoming Champions of Norfolk League Div 1 in 1988. Between 1985 and 1990, the Club also won the Norfolk League Cup three times. The A team was formed in 1986, initially with a full Sunday fixture list. For two seasons the club played at Bowthorpe, whilst a new facility was being prepared at Melton Park. That was formally opened on 30th Aug 1993. Now, thanks to 22 seasons of dedicated and fantastic work by groundsman Mike Phoenix, ably assisted by Grenville Ireland, Melton Park is rightly regarded as one of the most scenic grounds in the county, playing host to junior county matches, cup finals and schools festivals. The B team entered the League in 2004, followed by the C team in 2007 as the cub developed and grew, and in 2009 the aim of playing in the Norfolk Alliance was realised with both the 1st and A teams making their debuts that season. The 1st team won Div 4 in 2010, and Div 3 in 2011, before being promoted to the club’s highest ever level – Norfolk Alliance Div 1 – in 2013. The A team completed 2014 as the only Norfolk League side to remain unbeaten all season, and were promoted to Division 3, however, the combination of a loss of players of 1st / A team standard, and injuries, lead to relegation for both. The B team progressed to reach Norfolk league Div 2 in 2012, and the C team were promoted over four successive seasons between 2010 and 2013 up to Div 3. There have been a number of tours over the years to different parts of the country, with various themes from 70’s to Vikings, Morris Men to Super Heroes, Cowboys to Pirates, allowing the players to dress up and let their hair down. This has been accompanied by the rise in the match day fines, which brings a smile back to faces after matches, and allows sons (& daughters) to catch out their dads with dropped catches, mis-fields, and other Cricketing errors. The club has won an impressive 14 League titles & 12 Cups at senior level over the years, with the Midweek teams winning the Junior Cup and Shield (3 times) in recent seasons. This has been followed by successes at youth level, which started playing games in 1997, and last season saw over 60 matches at u17, u15, u13, u11, u9 and u7 levels. Since 2012 there has been a growing Women’s and Girls’ section which is the envy of clubs across the county, with the Girls playing in the same league as the boys at u13 level having won the Lady Taverners’ Trophy in 2013. In 2014 the club celebrated its 40th anniversary with a beer festival, which is now an annual event with bands and overnight camping, and forms a great mid season occasion to toast of all that is good within the club. ● HIRE AND SALE 2 & 3 BEDROOM STATICS FROM 75.00PW
