NYHAN LANDSCAPE Welcome Surfers, Sponsors and Supporters, The 7th Annual La Jolla Shores Menehune Surf contest is here again. The support you have shown us year after year is incredible. For making this our biggest and best event ever, I want to thank you all, including our generous sponsors, hardworking volunteers, and La Jolla Shores Surfing Asso- ciation members. I also want to thank our competitors for assisting the LJSSA com- munity outreach program. Every year, we donate much of our contest proceeds back to the community to a variety of organiza- tions and projects promoting worthy causes. This year please welcome our new division: the novice surfers. We hope to expose young athletes to this contest experience with- out the years of experience that some of our kids have. Encourage them to have a good time! I encourage contest surfers, young and old, to compete with a positive attitude towards your fellow surfers, always showing good sportsmanship and acknowledging that together we surf side-by-side in an ocean, on waves, that we all deeply love. I ask the volunteers to look around and appreciate your hundreds of hours of labor towards making this event happen. And finally, to all our sponsors, please know that without your generous sup- port, the LJSSA Menehune Contest could not have grown into the classic it has become. In addi- tion to our favorite and long standing commitment to the Toys for Tots Holiday Toy Drive, we’ve tried to focus on surf-related and local causes that support the ocean, our community, and our beach. Please stop by the raffle booth to pick up more information on these charitable organizations and projects. Here are the good causes we gave our support to in 2006-07: “The MAP” project/LJ Shores: $500 to an interpretive map of LJ Shores Underwater Park & Eco- logical Reserve to go in the ground at the South Comfort Station, supported by the LJ Shores Asso- ciation planning group, a collaborative effort w/ Scripps Inst., Birch Aquarium, Kumeyaay Indians , local educators & others. www.lajollaguide.com/ljsa/kellogg_park_lithocrete_map.html Toys for Tots (U.S. Marine Corps Reserve): collects new, unwrapped toys each year and distrib- utes those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community. LJSSA purchases $250 of toys in addition to club members’ donated toys at our annual holiday party in December. www.toydrive.com Surfrider Foundation/SD Chapter : $500 to support the great advocacy work of SurfRider’s local chapter which keeps us abreast of local sewage spills, coastline development, policy, and other is- sues. Surfrider is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education. www.surfriderssd.org Scripps Environmental Advocates in support of Scripps Institute of Oceanography Oceanographic Collections: $500 in support of the Oceanographic Collections of SIO/UCSD: world-renowned re- sources supporting basic research, educating current and future generations of scientists, … and providing a repository for samples collected by SIO researchers. http://collections.ucsd.edu/ Interscholastic Surfing Federation (ISF): $200 to the local San Diego chapter whose purpose is to give to student surfers from middle schools and high schools the opportunity to participate in a well organized, professionally operated surf program representing their school. www.isfsurfing.org UCSD Cancer Center Longboard & Luau Invitational: This is a unique gathering in the true “aloha” spirit of those in the business and surfing fraternities who care about cancer research. The UCSD Cancer Center ranks among the top centers in the nation conducting basic and clinical can- cer research. This year, we’ll be donating a custom longboard for their auction, hand painted by artist Stacy Vosberg and shaped by Don Laughlin. www.longboardluau.org SurfAid International: Through the dedicated efforts of a few surf club members, we were able to raise $1,000 from the Swim4Life fundraiser in March to go to this charity which improves the health of people living in remote areas connected to us through surf- ing. www.surfaidinternational.org Boardwalk/beach surfing sign/improvements: LJSSA put aside $2,000 in club funds for future projects on the Beach/boardwalk, in- cluding a surfing sign and/or community bulletin board. We would love to begin a feasibility of such a project to explore creative ways we can install a surfing sign at La Jolla Shores. If you’re interested Surfing sign at Steamers Lane in working on such a project with us over the next few years, please contact Lorraine Schmalenberger: [email protected]. Thanks to all of you for making our outreach program a success! LJ Shores Surfing Association Hosts 3rd Annual Surf Art Contest Surf Art Show currently on exhibit at La Jolla Riford Library through April Congratulations to grand art contest winner Brooke Nicholas of Francis Parker School. This is the third year that the La Jolla Shores Surf Association has hosted a surf art contest aimed at inspiring young artists to design and submit original art- work for the annual Menehune Surf Contest T-shirts. Brooke’s design is featured on the 2007 contest t-shirts. Brooke also received $100 in cash. Please stop by the La Jolla Riford Library Center and Jacobs Annex through April 30 to en- joy Brooke’s winning entry (pictured at right) as well as the surf-inspired artwork submitted by our other contestants. LJSSA received a record 150 entries this year from Muirlands and Kroc Middle Schools, Francis Parker School, La Jolla and Clairemont High Schools, and a few other area schools. We thank all the art teachers who generously supported the contest! We asked Brooke to submit a bio of herself and her inspiration for her artwork: My name is Brooke Nicholas. I am a 16 year old sophomore at Francis Parker, and a San Diego native. This is my second year of art and I am so excited to have finally won some- thing! As for hobbies, I am an avid tennis player and a very social person. I love the ocean and beach, and though I would eventually like to learn how to surf, I am currently not much of a surfer. My art was inspired by the intricacy of waves. It is easy for one to look at a wave and see it as simply that, but a wave is so much more. I wanted to show the flow of the ocean using familiar patterns, all emphasizing the complicated beauty and chaos of the sea. In my design, I did not neglect the people who honor waves the most. If you look very closely at the center of the wave, there is a tiny surfer gliding across the water. Though it is very tiny, I wanted to show the relationship between surfer and water in an appealing way. Thank so much to Lorraine and the La Jolla Shores Surfing Association for selecting me as the contest winner! P.S…The picture of me (at left) was taken by Erika Peirson, a friend. Other art students submitting prize winning work were: 2007 Grand Prize art contest Mikey Drummond, 2nd place, 7th grade, Gaspar De Portola Middle School winner, Brooke Nicholas Megan McLaughlin, 3rd place, age 16, Clairemont High School William Zhang, 4th place, La Jolla High School Shauna Jellison, 5th place, Muirlands Middle School Elizabeth Lincoln, honorable mention, 9th grade, Francis Parker School C.J. Scoppettuolo, honorable mention, 8th grade, Muirlands Middle School Josh Amberg, best humor, age 13, Kroc Middle School At left, is 2nd place artwork by Mikey Drummond. At right, is 3rd place artwork submitted by Megan McLaughlin. We ask contestants to depict KIDS + SURFING + FUN. Our judging panel is selected from our membership and includes surfboard shapers, graphic artists, and teachers. We always enjoy the creativity, originality, and fun depicted in the art. If you’re inter- ested in helping us with the art contest next year, please contact Lorraine Schmalenberger, Art Contest Coordinator: [email protected] WHO WE ARE The La Jolla Shores Surfing Association is dedi- cated to the celebration and preservation of our home break, La Jolla Shores Beach.
