McNeal | Pioneering Youth Marketer [TITLE SCREEN] Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood NARRATOR: Not since the end of World War II, at the height of the baby boom, have there been so many kids in our midst. There are now more than 52 million kids under 12 in all in the United States – the biggest burst in the U.S. youth population in half a century. And for American business, these kids have come to represent the ultimate prize: an unprecedented, powerful and elusive new demographic to be cut up and captured at all costs. There is no doubt that marketers have their sights on kids because of their increasing buying power – the amount of money they now spend on everything from clothes to music to electronics, totaling some 40 billion dollars every year. But perhaps the bigger reason for marketers’ interest in kids may be the amount of adult spending that American kids under 12 now directly influence – an astronomical 700 billion dollars a year, roughly the equivalent of the combined economies of the world’s 115 poorest countries. The success of SAVE would not be possible without your loyalty and involvement. Your ongoing support makes a significant difference in every area of the shelter’s programming. Several highlights from 2014-2015 include: • The establishment of a formal foster program for SAVE’s more needy animals. • Another terrific Gala and Holiday Boutique raising nearly $164,000 for SAVE. • Greater visibility throughout Mercer and Somerset Counties due to events, school visits, adoption days, and more. As many of you already know, SAVE’s remarkable staff and volunteers work hard to ensure that SAVE’s animals are well cared for and are quickly placed. The shelter’s reputation has grown and families know what a great job we do matching needy animals to caring people. Of course, we are more dependent now than ever on individual contributions. While we have seen an increase in donations in the last year, shelter expenses remain high. Providing quality care to the animals in residence is SAVE’s top priority. Again, thank you for your leadership and commitment to SAVE. Building a bright future for many dogs and cats is what makes the SAVE family so special. With deep gratitude, Piper H. As federal regulations of those stations loosen and fewer owners increase their holdings across the country, however, local community needs are subjugated by corporate fiduciary responsibilities. Business practices reveal rampant consolidation of ownership, newsroom job description convergence, skilled human labor replaced by computer automation, and economically-driven downsizings, all in the name of profit. -

EIU Faculty Member to Appear on CBS's 'The Early Show' This Friday Nov-29-2006 An Eastern Illinois University faculty member is to appear on CBS’s “The Early Show” on Friday, Dec. 1, thanks to Katie Couric’s interest in his research on food portions. The network flew James Painter, chair of EIU’s School of Family and Consumer Sciences, to New York over the weekend to tape a segment about his recent health-related studies. CBS had originally planned to do a segment on Painter’s “Portion Size Me” documentary on the CBS Evening News last November, but the piece never aired. But when Couric, the new anchor of “CBS Evening News,” started doing her current series on obesity, she remembered Painter’s story and had “The Early Show” track him down. “Katie is the one who said she wanted it,” Painter said. During the taping Monday, Painter talked to “The Early Show” correspondent Susan Koeppen about topics including his 2005 “Portion Size Me” documentary, in which two EIU students ate nothing but fast-food for a month – and lost weight in the process. -

2012 2012 NABJ Diversity Census An examination of Television Newsroom Management By Bob Butler National Association of Black Journalists PREFACE Five years ago, in the absence of any information, NABJ set out to research and report the true state of newsroom management diversity. The result was the Television Newsroom Management Diversity Census. Many have now come to depend on this important document to determine the true health and viability of diversity within today’s newsrooms. The report is not only for the public and those who work in the industry, but also corporations and employers who are charged with assessing the realities of these circumstances. The 2012 Television Newsroom Management Diversity Census is comprised of two reports. The first report studies the diversity of news managers at 295 stations owned by different 19 companies. There are more than 700 such stations nationwide and it is our intent to eventually document every television newsroom in the country. The second report examines the diversity of newsroom managers and executives at broadcast and cable news networks. Unlike the local station, which broadcast to their respective markets, the networks provide news to the entire country. You may notice that ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC are mentioned in both reports. These networks own 51 stations that were included in the stations report. The information within the local station report is not included nor factored into the national news networks report. The demographic data retrieved is inspired by Section 257 of the amended Communications Act of 1934, which requires the FCC to “identify and eliminate, through regulatory action, market entry barriers for entrepreneurs and other small businesses in the provision and ownership of telecommunications and information services.” NABJ is the only source in the country that collects employment census data, which is a critical component in determining if those barriers exist.
