Praegerb, Csaba Schneiderc aUniversity of St Andrews, St Andrews, UK bUniversity of Western Australia, Perth, Australia cUniversidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil Abstract Diagonal groups are one of the classes of finite primitive permutation groups occurring in the conclusion of the O'Nan{Scott theorem. Several of the other classes have been described as the automorphism groups of geometric or combi- natorial structures such as affine spaces or Cartesian decompositions, but such structures for diagonal groups have not been studied in general. The main purpose of this paper is to describe and characterise such struct- ures, which we call diagonal semilattices. Unlike the diagonal groups in the O'Nan{Scott theorem, which are defined over finite characteristically simple groups, our construction works over arbitrary groups, finite or infinite. A diagonal semilattice depends on a dimension m and a group T . For m = 2, it is a Latin square, the Cayley table of T , though in fact any Latin square satisfies our combinatorial axioms. However, for m > 3, the group T emerges naturally and uniquely from the axioms. (The situation somewhat resembles projective geometry, where projective planes exist in great profusion but higher- dimensional structures are coordinatised by an algebraic object, a division ring.) A diagonal semilattice is contained in the partition lattice on a set Ω, and we provide an introduction to the calculus of partitions. Many of the concepts and constructions come from experimental design in statistics. We also determine when a diagonal group can be primitive, or quasiprimitive (these conditions turn out to be equivalent for diagonal groups). -

Many problems involving polygons are simplified by partitioning the complex polygon into triangles, and then working with the individual triangles. The applications of such algorithms are well documented in papers involving visibility, motion planning, and computer graphics. The following notes give an introduction to triangulations and many related definitions and basic lemmas. Most of the definitions are based on a simple polygon, P, containing n edges, and hence n vertices. However, many of the definitions and results can be extended to a general arrangement of n line segments. 1 Diagonals Definition 1. Given a simple polygon, P, a diagonal is a line segment between two non-adjacent vertices that lies entirely within the interior of the polygon. Lemma 2. Every simple polygon with jPj > 3 contains a diagonal. Proof: Consider some vertex v. If v has a diagonal, it’s party time. If not then the only vertices visible from v are its neighbors. Therefore v must see some single edge beyond its neighbors that entirely spans the sector of visibility, and therefore v must be a convex vertex. Now consider the two neighbors of v. Since jPj > 3, these cannot be neighbors of each other, however they must be visible from each other because of the above situation, and thus the segment connecting them is indeed a diagonal. -

• 3D shapes/objects are those which do not lie completely in a plane. • 3D objects have different views from different positions. • A solid is a polyhedron if it is made up of only polygonal faces, the faces meet at edges which are line segments and the edges meet at a point called vertex. • Euler’s formula for any polyhedron is, F + V – E = 2 Where F stands for number of faces, V for number of vertices and E for number of edges. • Types of polyhedrons: (a) Convex polyhedron A convex polyhedron is one in which all faces make it convex. e.g. (1) (2) (3) (4) 12/04/18 (1) and (2) are convex polyhedrons whereas (3) and (4) are non convex polyhedron. (b) Regular polyhedra or platonic solids: A polyhedron is regular if its faces are congruent regular polygons and the same number of faces meet at each vertex. For example, a cube is a platonic solid because all six of its faces are congruent squares. There are five such solids– tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron. e.g. • A prism is a polyhedron whose bottom and top faces (known as bases) are congruent polygons and faces known as lateral faces are parallelograms (when the side faces are rectangles, the shape is known as right prism). • A pyramid is a polyhedron whose base is a polygon and lateral faces are triangles. • A map depicts the location of a particular object/place in relation to other objects/places. Poligrams and Polygons THE TRIANGLE The Triangle is the only Lineal Figure into which all surfaces can be reduced, for every Polygon can be divided into Triangles by drawing lines from its angles to its centre. Thus the Triangle is the first and simplest of all Lineal Figures. We refer to the Triad operating in all things, to the 3 Supernal Sephiroth, and to Binah the 3rd Sephirah. Among the Planets it is especially referred to Saturn; and among the Elements to Fire. As the colour of Saturn is black and the Triangle that of Fire, the Black Triangle will represent Saturn, and the Red Fire. The 3 Angles also symbolize the 3 Alchemical Principles of Nature, Mercury, Sulphur, and Salt. As there are 3600 in every great circle, the number of degrees cut off between its angles when inscribed within a Circle will be 120°, the number forming the astrological Trine inscribing the Trine within a circle, that is, reflected from every second point. THE SQUARE The Square is an important lineal figure which naturally represents stability and equilibrium. It includes the idea of surface and superficial measurement. It refers to the Quaternary in all things and to the Tetrad of the Letter of the Holy Name Tetragrammaton operating through the four Elements of Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. It is allotted to Chesed, the 4th Sephirah, and among the Planets it is referred to Jupiter. As representing the 4 Elements it represents their ultimation with the material form. The 4 angles also include the ideas of the 2 extremities of the Horizon, and the 2 extremities of the Median, which latter are usually called the Zenith and the Nadir: also the 4 Cardinal Points. -

Bridges Finland Conference Proceedings Some Girihs and Puzzles from the Interlocks of Similar or Complementary Figures Treatise Reza Sarhangi Department of Mathematics Towson University Towson, MD 21252 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This paper is the second one to appear in the Bridges Proceedings that addresses some problems recorded in the Interlocks of Similar or Complementary Figures treatise. Most problems in the treatise are sketchy and some of them are incomprehensible. Nevertheless, this is the only document remaining from the medieval Persian that demonstrates how a girih can be constructed using compass and straightedge. Moreover, the treatise includes some puzzles in the transformation of a polygon into another one using mathematical formulas or dissection methods. It is believed that the document was written sometime between the 13th and 15th centuries by an anonymous mathematician/craftsman. The main intent of the present paper is to analyze a group of problems in this treatise to respond to questions such as what was in the mind of the treatise’s author, how the diagrams were constructed, is the conclusion offered by the author mathematically provable or is incorrect. All images, except for photographs, have been created by author. 1. Introduction There are a few documents such as treatises and scrolls in Persian mosaic design, that have survived for centuries. The Interlocks of Similar or Complementary Figures treatise [1], is one that is the source for this article. In the Interlocks document, one may find many interesting girihs and also some puzzles that are solved using mathematical formulas or dissection methods. Dissection, in the present literature, refers to cutting a geometric, two-dimensional shape, into pieces that can be rearranged to compose a different shape. -

Uniform Panoploid Tetracombs George Olshevsky TETRACOMB is a four-dimensional tessellation. In any tessellation, the honeycells, which are the n-dimensional polytopes that tessellate the space, Amust by definition adjoin precisely along their facets, that is, their ( n!1)- dimensional elements, so that each facet belongs to exactly two honeycells. In the case of tetracombs, the honeycells are four-dimensional polytopes, or polychora, and their facets are polyhedra. For a tessellation to be uniform, the honeycells must all be uniform polytopes, and the vertices must be transitive on the symmetry group of the tessellation. Loosely speaking, therefore, the vertices must be “surrounded all alike” by the honeycells that meet there. If a tessellation is such that every point of its space not on a boundary between honeycells lies in the interior of exactly one honeycell, then it is panoploid. If one or more points of the space not on a boundary between honeycells lie inside more than one honeycell, the tessellation is polyploid. Tessellations may also be constructed that have “holes,” that is, regions that lie inside none of the honeycells; such tessellations are called holeycombs. It is possible for a polyploid tessellation to also be a holeycomb, but not for a panoploid tessellation, which must fill the entire space exactly once. Polyploid tessellations are also called starcombs or star-tessellations. Holeycombs usually arise when (n!1)-dimensional tessellations are themselves permitted to be honeycells; these take up the otherwise free facets that bound the “holes,” so that all the facets continue to belong to two honeycells. In this essay, as per its title, we are concerned with just the uniform panoploid tetracombs. -

A theory of replicating tessellation of R is developed that simultaneously generalizes radix representation of integers and hexagonal addressing in computer science. The tiling aggregates tesselate Eu- clidean space so that the (m + 1)st aggregate is, in turn, tiled by translates of the ruth aggregate, for each m in exactly the same way. This induces a discrete hierarchical addressing systsem on R'. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of replicating tessellations are given, and an efficient algorithm is provided to de- termine whether or not a replicating tessellation is induced. It is shown that the generalized balanced ternary is replicating in all dimensions. Each replicating tessellation yields an associated self-replicating tiling with the following properties: (1) a single tile T tesselates R periodically and (2) there is a linear map A, such that A(T) is tiled by translates of T. Survey of Math: Chapter 20: Tilings Page 1 Tilings A tiling is a covering of the entire plane with ¯gures which do not not overlap, and leave no gaps. Tilings are also called tesselations, so you will see that word often. The plane is in two dimensions, and that is where we will focus our examination, but you can also tile in one dimension (over a line), in three dimensions (over a space) and mathematically, in even higher dimensions! How cool is that? Monohedral tilings use only one size and shape of tile. Regular Polygons A regular polygon is a ¯gure whose sides are all the same length and interior angles are all the same. n 3 n 4 n 5 n 6 n 7 n 8 n 9 Equilateral Triangle, Square, Pentagon, Hexagon, n-gon for a regular polygon with n sides. Not all of these regular polygons can tile the plane. The regular polygons which do tile the plane create a regular tiling, and if the edge of a tile coincides entirely with the edge of a bordering tile, it is called an edge-to-edge tiling.
