And, in keeping with the animal theme, you can get splashed by a killer whale at SeaWorld. You can also tour the city by boat, bus, or trolley, or stop by the Seaport Village for shopping and dining along the waterfront. These are just a few of the uncountable things you can do in San Diego. Balboa Park, located .25 miles from the resort, is loaded with activities and sights for the whole family. Your best bet is to buy the Passport to Balboa Park, a coupon booklet that will get you into 13 museums (the two others are free of charge) and is good for one week. Just a sampling of the museums you’ll encounter: San Diego Aerospace Museum, Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum, Mingei International Museum, and San Diego Historical Society Museum. You’ll also find the acclaimed Globe Theatres—where the annual summer Shakespeare Festival is held—as well as the Botanical Building and Lily Pond, eight gardens, the San Diego Zoo, a golf course, and several restaurants. Sports fans have their pick of professional baseball, football, and hockey. Or, in this city’s incredible climate and setting, you can partake in your own favorite sport, whether it’s golfing, deep-sea fishing, rollerblading, bike riding, surfing, or sailing. Downtown offers something for everyone. Meander the streets, shops, and restaurants of the turn-of-the-20th-century Gaslamp Quarter to see roughly 17 blocks of restored historical buildings. As you might imagine, the area takes its name from the lamps lining the streets. Just north of Gaslamp is the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCA). After you peruse the changing and permanent exhibits, head north again to the Firehouse Museum. The kids will love this place, housed in San Diego’s oldest firehouse. (And speaking of kids, if they’re in tow, don’t miss Legoland, located in Carlsbad, which combines 40 hands-on, interactive attractions, family rides, shows, and restaurants.) Continue north on India Street, and it will take you right into the heart of Little Italy. You’ll find eclectic shops, galleries, and many Italian restaurants. Keep your eyes peeled for the impressive and beautiful murals and paintings on many of the neighborhood’s buildings. Add Old Town, otherwise known as the “birthplace of San Diego,” to your list of stop-offs. Shop the Bazaar del Mundo, a 1930s-era motel-turned-collection-of-shops, and stop for lunch at one of the area’s many California-style Mexican restaurants. The bazaar is very popular with tourists, but well worth braving the crowds. No trip to San Diego would be complete without a short drive over the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge to the island of Coronado. Rent a bike and tour the quaint community via the island bike path, and check out the famous historical Hotel Del Coronado and Coronado Beach. And speaking of beaches, San Diego has 70 miles of sandy coastline and more than 30 official beaches. A few you should visit include: Ocean Beach, known as “Dog Beach” because pooches can roam freely; Mission Bay Park and its 27 miles of bayfront; Mission Beach, marked by the Giant Dipper roller coaster; Pacific Beach, the Venice Beach of San Diego; and Windansea Beach, where the best of the best go to surf. ____________________________________________________________________ Driving Directions From the North • Drive I-5 South and take the 10th Avenue exit toward Escondido, then exit 10th Avenue. • Make a slight left on 10th Avenue. • Turn left onto A Street. • Casa Del Prado in Balboa Park
Chapter 19 HISTORY OF THE CASA DEL PRADO IN BALBOA PARK Of buildings remaining from the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, exhibit buildings north of El Prado in the agricultural section survived for many years. They were eventually absorbed by the San Diego Zoo. Buildings south of El Prado were gone by 1933, except for the New Mexico and Kansas Buildings. These survive today as the Balboa Park Club and the House of Italy. This left intact the Spanish-Colonial complex along El Prado, the main east-west avenue that separated north from south sections The Sacramento Valley Building, at the head of the Plaza de Panama in the approximate center of El Prado, was demolished in 1923 to make way for the Fine Arts Gallery. The Southern California Counties Building burned down in 1925. The San Joaquin Valley and the Kern-Tulare Counties Building, on the promenade south of the Plaza de Panama, were torn down in 1933. When the Science and Education and Home Economy buildings were razed in 1962, the only 1915 Exposition buildings on El Prado were the California Building and its annexes, the House of Charm, the House of Hospitality, the Botanical Building, the Electric Building, and the Food and Beverage Building. This paper will describe the ups and downs of the 1915 Varied Industries and Food Products Building (1935 Food and Beverage Building), today the Casa del Prado. When first conceived the Varied Industries and Food Products Building was called the Agriculture and Horticulture Building. The name was changed to conform to exhibits inside the building.
