1 This list covers the French BYZ (blue, yellow, zinc) period, which started in 1970 and ended in 1992. In 1970, the UK and French Meccano Companies (at the time both owned by Lines Bros.) decided to adopt the same range of sets, and the same colour schemes. The BYZ colours (already in use in the UK) were chosen. French Meccano changed from its previous scheme (dark blue, red, gold) to BYZ. It should be noted, though, that the French blue differed slightly from the UK blue, and that the French yellow (lemon yellow) differed substantially from the UK yellow. A common range of sets was introduced in both the UK and France. In the UK, it was named the “Enthusiast Series”. In France, it was named the “Série Enthousiaste”. In 1978, the Enthusiast series was phased out in the UK, and a new colour scheme, DBDY (dark blue, dark yellow) was adopted. This change was never followed in France, where the “Enthousiaste” series remained practically unchanged until 1984, when it was withdrawn from the catalogues. This was not the end of the series, which was re-launched in 1986, with a few minor modifications, concerning mainly the nuts and bolts (see note 3). Sets 1 to 4 of the series were replaced in 1987 and again in 1989 by new ones and, in 1991, sets 1 to 6 were replaced by the new Basic and Techno series. All these sets used the same French BYZ colour scheme. In 1992, the remaining sets (7 to 10) of the original “Enthousiaste” series were finally phased out, thus bringing the French BYZ period to an end.
2 On the above list, where the “Year of Introduction” and / or the “Found in Sets / Notes” columns were left blank for a given part, it means that the part was used in the “Enthousiaste” sets. It does not mean, though, that the part was exclusive to that series. It could have been used by other sets / series (and, in most cases, it was). Parts that were available during the period, but were included in no set, are duly noted. Introduction dates for new parts or existing parts in new colours are noted on the “Year of Introduction” column. For the same parts, information is provided on the “Found in Sets / Notes column, regarding the sets or series where they were included. 3 Until 1981, when all the Meccano production was shifted to Calais, Meccano France used exclusively cheese head bolts and square nuts on the sets they produced. Round head bolts and hexagonal nuts were introduced in 1981, but they were included only in new sets, especially those meant for the UK market. The “Enthousiaste” series, which was not available to the UK market, went on with cheese head bolts and square nuts until its production was suspended, in 1984. Production was re-started in 1986 and the series was made available to all markets. Contents of the sets remained practically unchanged, except for the bolts, which were changed to round head, and the nuts, which were changed to hexagonal. In 1989, the new Allen head (hexagonal socket head) bolts were introduced. The nuts reverted to square. Theoretically, these changes were applied to the whole range of sets, as made evident by the parts lists delivered with them. In practice, though, this did not happen. Sets 5 to 10 of the “Enthousiaste” series continued to be delivered with round head bolts and hexagonal nuts. And, in 1981, when sets 5 and 6 were replaced by the new Techno ones, sets 7 to 10 remained as before. This situation remained unchanged until the sets 7 to 10 were phased out in 1992. Notwithstanding the fact, we retained the official changing dates on the above list, with a call to this note for clarification.
4 The colour and finish variants of any part included on this list are exclusively the ones that existed, either in sets or as spares, during the period to which the list refers. This means that this list does not include colour or finish variants of a part, which existed only in later sub- periods of the complete 1970-2015 period covered by our research. As a consequence, if you want to know all the colour variants of a given part that existed from 1970 to 2015, you have to check all the four sub-period lists that cover that time span (1970-1981 UK, 1970-1992 France, 1993-2001 and 2001-2015). 5 In 2001 Meccano replaced their traditional Parts Numbering System by a new one. New Part Numbers were allocated only to parts that were being used in the sets that were current at the time. As parts that had a number under the old system came to be used in newly introduced sets, a new part number was allocated to them. New Part Numbers allocated to parts that had an old system number are of the type “Axxx” (meaning the letter “A” followed by a three digit number). The only exceptions to this rule concern parts No. 6, No. 115d, No. 162d and No. 236, which were renumbered as B146, B115, B175 and B236. As a side note, entirely new parts are allocated numbers “Bxxx”, “Cxxx”, etc. Under the new numbering system (as under the old one) part numbers ignore the different colours or finishes a given part may be presented in. The column “Part Number / New” contains the new Part Numbers allocated to the parts included on this list. A blank entry means that the part was not included in sets current in 2002, or introduced from then on. As evidenced by the Spare Parts Catalogue of 1977, all the parts that were used in No. 10 sets were still available, at least up to that year. We have reasons to believe that they were available until 2001, but this is an unconfirmed guess. In 2002, all parts that were not used in sets current at the time (and consequently had not been allocated a new part number) were made unavailable, and were removed from the spare parts list. At a later stage new part numbers were allocated to existing stocks of parts that were not used in sets. These were made available to a few Meccano dealers (at very expensive prices…), on a “while stocks last” basis.
