Chasing Sea Witch The clipper ship had its heyday in the mid-nineteenth century when it was profitable to move high-value cargo at a high rate of speed. The name really meant "speed" ship, as in moving "at a good clip." It is well known to sailors that the clippers were the fastest sailing ships of all time. So, why, asks Cynthia Parthemas, writing for Sites Alive, would our Rich duMoulin "want to leave comfortable Larchmont, for a 70-day trip from Hong Kong to New York, to break the speed record of Sea Witch, in a 53-foot two-man boat?" The first answer is that he is a product of Dartmouth, and this is what Dartmouth people do. But, the second answer lies with his passion for sailing, for adventure at sea, and for the opportunity to bring school kids across the country "along for the ride." But, it goes deeper than that - to the explorers who have always fascinated Rich duMoulin, including Columbus, Shackleton, and the astronauts. I, too, have had a similar fascination - and share his special admiration for Ernest Shackleton and the circumstances of his extraordinary and ill-fated 1914-17 Imperial Trans Antarctic Expedition - and, against all odds, the elements of improbable success of his voyage. His purported recruitment advertisement said it all: "Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success." Historically accurate or not, his recruitment was over-subscribed. Despite having the Endurance crushed by ice, floating on ice floes, camping on Elephant Island in winter, sailing 800 miles for 16 days across the open sea in an un-seaworthy life boat, and then climbing across the forbidding peaks of South Georgia, Shackleton was able to return and bring all of his men home to safety. -

While the former provide pattern, the latter give texture. Objects that directly link people to historical events allow us to touch the past. Some are very personal connections between indi- viduals and their ancestors. Others are the touch- stones of our collective memory. Buried in the sand of Lake Superior is the USS ESSEX, an artifact of the nation’s maritime past. A mid- nineteenth-century sloop of war designed by one of America’s foremost naval architects, Donald McKay, the ESSEX traveled around the world and ultimately came to rest on Duluth’s Minnesota Point, about as far from the ocean as a vessel can get. The timbers of the SCOTT F. ANFINSON Scott Anfinson is the archaeologist for the Minnesota Historical Society’s State Historic Preservation Office. He received a Master’s degree in anthropology from the University of Nebraska in 1977 and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Minnesota in 1987. Besides directing the Minnesota Shipwreck Initiative, his research interests focus on the American Indian archaeology of southwestern Minnesota and the history of the Minneapolis riverfront. THIS is a great doctrinal truth, and I might with much propriety preach a doctrinal sermon from it, of which the sum and substance would be the sovereign grace of God. God’s love is evidently prior to ours: “He first loved us.” It is also clear enough from the text that God’s love is the cause of ours, for “We love him because he first loved us.” Therefore, going back to old time, or rather before all time, when we find God loving us with an everlasting love, we gather that the reason of his choice is not because we loved him, but because he willed to love us. His reasons, and he had reasons (for we read of the counsel of his will), are known to himself, but they are not to be found in any inherent goodness in us, or which was foreseen to be in us. We were chosen simply because he will have mercy on whom he will have mercy. He loved us because he would love us. The gift of his dear Son, which was a close consequent upon his choice of his people, was too great a sacrifice on God’s part to have been drawn from him by any goodness in the creature. -

Early American Trade with China Early American Trade with China THE CHINA TRADE, 1830 TO 1860 In the years following the American Revolution, speed was the most important consider- ation for any ship even if it came at the expense of cargo space. Sailing ships tended to be small and swift so that they could outrun and outmaneuver British, French, or pirate vessels trying to capture them. By 1830, this threat had largely been eliminated, and a new type of clipper ship was developed. From 1841 through 1860, “extreme clippers” dominated the trade to Asia. These ships were large, carrying huge, lucrative cargoes of tea, spices, textiles, and chinaware to consumers in America and Europe. By the 1830s, trade routes were well estab- lished between the United States and China, and the names of ports in the Eastern hemi- sphere, once exotic and mysterious, were becoming increasingly familiar to Americans as places of importance to the United States’ economy. During the decades preceding and during the Civil War, the United States was largely focused on domestic matters and sectionalism rather than foreign policy. But it was also during this time that Americans, who had spent most of their history looking towards the East Coast and Europe, began to see the strategic and economic importance of developing the West Coast and maintaining shipping routes to the Far East. During the late 1850s, the United States’ trade with China declined. Domestic manufactures produced in factories in the rapidly industrializing northern states were replacing imports: cotton replaced nankeen, and American pottery factories replicated Chinese designs on porcelain, and coffee imported from central and South America was replacing Chinese tea. -

(Gerrit) Winkel is the name he used throughout the majority of his life, including official military, Civil Service records and passports. His Dutch birth certificate lists his name as Gerrit Roelof Antonie Winkel. Anton was used starting at a young age to save confusion between the name of his older brother, Geert, and his own, Gerrit. He was called Tone later by most of his acquaintances throughout his life. 1902 Born at Alphen on the Rhine in the Netherlands on October 4. His parents were Hendrik and Everdina Cornelia Van Ojen Winkel. They joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on November 12, 1904, and immigrated to Utah in April, 1906. 1906-07 Lived in Poplar Grove in Salt Lake City, Utah. 1907-10 Lived on 33rd South 2nd West in Salt Lake City, Utah. 1910-12 Lived in Monroe, Utah. 1912-25 Lived in Richfield, Utah. 1921 Served in the Army Field Artillery at Fort Douglas for six weeks 1921 Attended Utah State Agricultural College for one winter term. 1925-28 Served an L.D.S. Mission to Netherlands. Worked on ranches and farms around Richfield before and after his mission. 1931 Married Clella Luke in the Mesa Arizona Temple on May 28. 1931-37 In Logan, Utah, at Utah State Agricultural College. -
