    Carlisle District: Rural Masterplanning BURGH BY SANDS BURGH BY SANDS Figure 1: Location of Burgh by Sands January 2013 Page 1 Carlisle District: Rural Masterplanning BURGH BY SANDS Settlement Profile: Strategic position Historically, Burgh by Sands has occupied a very important strategic location. Roman military encampments were placed at this strategic location on Hadrian‟s Wall round Burgh by Sands to guard two nearby Solway becks. There are also two earlier auxiliary forts and a number of marching camps. The heritage value of the settlement continues from the visitor perspective. Burgh by Sands is a linear settlement, just over 6 miles west of Carlisle that extends along a minor road that continues round the coast of the Solway Firth. The settlement centre is at the cross-roads junction with a minor north-south road. To the north, the road heads towards the River Eden and loops round south again to Beaumont, but there is no crossing of the River Eden to head north without returning via Carlisle city centre bridge. Burgh by Sands‟ position on a minor road to the coast means it does not play a strategic role in the area. The settlement does however now play an important role locally with the primary school covering a wide area of neighboring parishes. The Church, pub and local garage are also locally significant. The Cumbrian Coastal Way and the Hadrian‟s Wall National Trail pass right through the centre of the village along the main east-west street. The Hadrian‟s Wall World Heritage Site and Vallum pass through the settlement.

Following removal of the Solway viaduct in the 1930s the channel returned to its previously unrestrained state and moved across the Firth to the northern side between Bowness and Port Carlisle, where its location is held away from the shoreline by the promontory of Kirkland Scar. Further upstream the channel moves to the south opposite Glasson. Upstream from Glasson extensive areas of saltmarsh (Easton Marsh and Burgh Marsh) have developed. The Eden channel runs along the edge of Easton Marsh, which is consequently susceptible to erosion. Most of this section is undefended and consists of natural saltmarsh. Between Bowness on Solway and Grey Havens the coastline is defended by sections of blockwork wall and/or concrete walls with sloping concrete revetments added in places, which provide protection to the edge of the public highway. The Path passes through a wooded area near the edge of the salt-marsh. • Once you reach the coast road again, cross over and follow the lane towards the Cottage and Glendale Holiday Park. At its entrance, the Path turns left along a straight track, which lies on top of the Vallum and is a scheduled monument.

    COIN-LOSS AND THE ROMAN OCCUPATION OF NORTH-WEST ENGLAND DAVID SHOTTER FOR more than half a century the recording and publication of Roman coin-finds in Scotland has provided a body of evidence of immeasurable importance to all who are concerned with the study of the Roman occupation of Scottish sites.1 Elsewhere in Britain, however, whilst such work may have been undertaken with respect to individual sites, it has rarely been published on a regional basis. Over the last two decades an attempt has been made to collect all information on Roman coins found in north-west England - an area covered by the historic counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire.2 The purpose of this compilation has been to maximise the contribution of the coin-evidence to our understanding of the Roman occupation of north-west England through which we may hope to see not just the chronology of occupation of individual sites, but also the nature of that occupation, and look further afield for evidence of the social and economic effects on the region of the concentrations of Romanised activity in the forts and their extra-mural settlements. It is, however, important to recognise the shortcomings in the evidence itself and the difficulties inherent in its interpretation. It is self-evident that we need site-samples which are as large as possible and to achieve this, we must call upon coins found at different times and in a variety of circumstances, and which have been recorded with variable levels of completeness, and even of accuracy. At most sites in north-west England, the number of coins recovered during controlled excavations has been relatively small, although Carlisle, probably the most significant site in the region, is an exception to this, with the majority of its sample of two thousand coins deriving from the work undertaken since the mid-1970s by the city's Archaeological Unit.
