C4 | SPORTS THE FREDERICK NEWS-POST | SUNDAY, JUNE 24, 2018 Player of the Year RAEGAN SMITH CATOCTIN JUNIOR INFIELD n A broken right hand in the middle of the season did what opposing pitchers only dreamed of — it prevented Smith from pounding home runs for a prolonged period. But remarkably, she was back in the lineup belting homers in the playoffs, helping the Cougars win their 21st regional title — more than any other MPSSAA softball team — and reach the Class 1A state championship game. In her first at-bat since the injury, a 1A West regional game against Boonsboro, she homered, one of three shots she hit in the postseason. The diligent work she put in with her good hand while being sidelined made her all-the-more ready when she was medically cleared to resume her junior season. n Despite missing 10 games with her injury, Smith led Frederick County with eight home runs, assuming the role as Catoctin’s main slugger folllowing the graduation of Jessi Bryant. She had a team-high batting average of .528 with four doubles, two triples, 30 RBIs and a 1.132 slugging percentage. She continued her hard-hitting ways in Catoctin’s 4-2 loss to Bohemia Manor in the state final, smacking an RBI triple off hard-throwing ace Madison Penta and later scoring to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. n Aside from swinging a mighty bat, Smith’s defensive versatilty has also benefited the Cougars. After being the starting third baseman as a freshman, she switched to catcher last year when the Cougars needed someone to fill that void. This year, she was back at third base.
