Floriculture between Art and Profit

Floriculture, as an activity and field of study, includes decorative plant growing through flowers, as well as through leaves. These are added to the cultures for cut and decoration flowers, for indoor landscaping and those used for the production of seedlings, usually grown in green- houses, in a controlled environment, and sold for gardens and landscap- ing. According to MARD statistics, since 2012 a significant increase of flower cultivation areas was recorded both in the field, as well as in the protected areas. Significant productions were recorded in the counties of Ilfov, Alba, Dâmbovița, Maramureş, Pra- hova, Mureş, Dolj, Giurgiu, Călăraşi, Satu-Mare, Bacău and Iaşi. The most frequent types of flowers are carna- tions, chrysanthemums, roses and gerberas. In this issue of our magazine we’ve chosen for you examples of green houses and producers who have ded- icated their time to the floristic cul- ture. The petals go through a screening process and only those with a certain consisten- cy are picked, manually removing all impurities. Then, the petals are washed and pass to the preparation process. It is extremely important for flowers to be immediately processed, because the storage thereof for more than 12 hours leads to a loss of half their properties.

Finally, they are set into jars which were sterilized in advance, are en- cased and go into the oven again for vacuuming. Thus, the jam will last longer. Harvesting is performed four months per year. For one jar, 250 grams of rose petals are used.

The rose jam recipe has undergone a few steps to rediscover the childhood taste, for the years passed trying to find the ideal combination of fra- grance and color. After a summer of preparing tens of recipes, the couple managed to discover the one which would please them and astonish the people who had a taste of the jam.

Once the execution is completed, at the end of a process which may take two-three years for larger projects, the firm also provides maintenance services.

„We are able to determine the man- ner in which the landscape will evolve in time and we can ensure a sustainable management”, said the business co-founder, adding that the firms boasts clients with whom they have been working for 20 years.

The duration of a project varies from one-two months, to a year, depend- ing on its complexity.

„We allocated one or two months for every smaller project, because the project must be designed, analyzed and requires time to sediment the ideas. A site must be visited during rainy and sunny days, when it is crowded, packed full of people, and when it is empty. Only then can you create a relation with the space, and it may tell you what it needs. One must also assess a space in senso- rial, not just climatic terms”, ex- plained Vera Dobrescu.

Once the project design is complete, it is followed by its execution. Ex- perts prepare an economic evalu- ation of the work, so that the bene- ficiary may acknowledge just how great the investment is. After they receive the budget evaluation, the company members can proceed to implement the project, but not man- datorily.
