The presidency of the Council rotates among the EU member states every 6 months. During this 6-month period, the presidency chairs meetings at every level in the Council, helping to ensure the continuity of the EU's work in the Council. Member states holding the presidency work together closely in groups of three, called 'trios'. This system was introduced by the Lisbon Treaty in 2009. The trio sets long-term goals and prepares a common agenda determining the topics and major issues that will be addressed by the Council over an 18 month period. On the basis of this programme, each of the three countries prepares its own more detailed 6-month programme. The current trio is made up of the presidencies of the Germany, Portugal and Slovenia. Portugal's presidency of the Council of the EU: 1 January - 30 June 2021 The priorities of Portugal's presidency are driven by its motto: "Time to deliver: a fair, green and digital recovery". The presidency programme focuses on five main areas, which are in line with the goals of the EU’s strategic agenda: strengthen Europe’s resilience; promote confidence in the European social model; promote a sustainable recovery; speed up a fair and inclusive digital transition; reaffirm the EU’s role in the world, ensuring that this is based on openness and multilateralism. Sete Rios is the main hub for Rede Expressos buses and is a busy bus station with frequent arrivals and departures. Esta histórica población se encuentra fuertemente amurallada y cuenta con un interesante patrimonio histórico y artístico en el que destaca su castillo y sus numerosas iglesias y una bien conservada arquitectura popular. Abstract Bringing up to date in a succinct manner, the study of the many menhirs in Portugal and the few in Galicia. ste trabajo, como tantos otros de mi faceta prehistórica, tiene lejano origen y larga gestación, muchas veces abandonada por el consciente, pero nunca por el Esubconsciente, que me result a un utilísimo archivo existencial e insomne, algo así como la conciencia “nunca dormida, mudo y pertinaz testigo” de la poesía de Núñez de Arce. El principio tuvo lugar hacia 1949 (precisamente cuando también elaboraba, en 6 meses, mi tesis doctoral sobre la Geografía de Galicia en Ptolomeo) por encargo del Instituto de Estudios Gallegos Padre Sarmiento, para poner al día la «Historia de Galicia» de Murguía, con el nombre de “Galicia Histórica”. Los organizadores eran Sánchez Cantón y Filgueira. No se publicó, y aun hoy desconozco la causa, aunque en aquellos tiempos tras lo misterioso estaba casi siempre lo político. Cuevillas publicó por su cuenta su 2ª parte de la “Galicia Histórica”, excelente síntesis, “La civilización céltica de Galicia” de 1953 (reeditada en 1989). Candeiasa,c,e This article describes a study carried out on the emblematic mural painting so-called ‘fresco of the good and bad judge’ located at the medieval village of Monsaraz (southern Portugal). This painting, with two distintic narratives, is thematically unique in Portugal and rare in the context of European Renaissance art. Scientific research was undertaken to clarify doubts about the chronology of the two painted scenes through a technical study and a material characterization of its constituents, namely, mortars, pigments, and binders. Elemental and chemical analyses were performed by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy detector, optic microscopy, m-Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy. Comparative examination revealed that along with the stylistic similarities, there are no recognizable differences in the painting technique (garments and carnations) nor in the structure and composition of the pictorial support and chromatic layers. The mortars of both scenes are made of lime with different ratios of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) mixed with siliceous and granitic aggregates. An intonachino made with a more calcitic lime is visible in all carnations.

    Middle Guadiana River Basin (Badajoz, Spain and Alentejo, Portugal) Network Interactions: Insights from the Chemical Analysis of Bell Beaker Pottery and the Lead Isotope Analysis of Copper Items from the Third Millennium BC C.P. Odriozola, M.A. Hunt-Ortiz, M.I. Dias, and V. Hurtado 1 Introduction Several settlement networks from the Iberian Copper Age period are located alongside the Guadiana River (Iberian Peninsula) – i.e. Perdigo˜es, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Portugal (Dias et al. 2005; Valera 2006), or Tierra de Barros, Badajoz, Spain (Hurtado 1995, 1999). In this context, a clear relation has been found between the sites in terms of spatial organization (hierarchical, where La Pijotilla could be considered as a central place in a core-periphery system), a restricted stylistic distribution of the so-called Guadiana ‘eyed idol’ figurines (Hurtado 2008), or the distribution of bone based inlayed Bell Beaker pottery (Hurtado and Odriozola 2008; Odriozola in press). Since the 1970s, the Beaker Network paradigm (Clarke 1976) has been system- atically used to explain the broad and fast expansion of the so-called “Beaker phenomenon” all over Europe and the north of Africa, linked to the long distance trade of prestige items (copper items, ivory, amber, etc). However, little if any evidence of exchanged Bell Beaker (BB) pottery or copper items has been found after years of research, except for stylistic inferences. It is known that a style can be easily copied just by visual examination of the finished product; this is likely the easiest way to explain style dispersion, but does not justify hypotheses regarding vessel or copper artefact exchanges or transactions.
