Groehn One lovely Wednesday afternoon, in the 1870's, two little girls sat on the McVittie front steps on the south side of Canfield Avenue West, between Second Boulevard and Third Avenue. They were watching the carriagos and horses as they clip-clopped to a stop in front of the Watton carriage stone next door. The ladies in elegant afternoon attire were "com!"" to call" on Mrs. Walter I"atton, the wife of a prominent Detroit denti"t.. Wednesday was the day Mrs. Watton IIreceived," and this was duly noted in a Detroit society blue book, which was a handy reference book for the lIin societyll ladies. Once again, almost one hundred years later, the atmosphere of ele gantly built homes with beautiful, landscaped lawns and quiet living can become a reality on tilis block. The residents who are now rehe.bilitating these homes are recognizing the advantage of historic tOlm house lh-;.ng, wi th its proximity to the center of business, cultural, and educati'm"~_ facilities. Our enthusiasm has blossomed into a plan called the CanfIeid West-Wayne Project, because we desire to share with others our discovery of its unique historical phenomenon. -
Spotlight on MHPN in Detroit
Michigan Historic Preservation Network August 2015 It has been a busy summer for the Michigan Historic Preservation Network (MHPN) in the Metro Detroit area! From launching Brick + Beam Detroit in partnership with Preservation Detroit and Detroit Future City, starting Phase III of the Jefferson-Chalmers Preservation Demonstration Project, and welcoming Jennifer Reinhardt, our new Detroit Preservation Specialist (see page 4 for an introduction to Jennifer), MHPN continues to build upon our core areas of education, advocacy, and community engagement. Brick + Beam Detroit Selected by the Knight Foundation as a Knight Cities Challenge winner in March of this year, Brick + Beam Detroit aims to create a forum in which building rehabbers and DIYers can connect with each other as well as developers, tradespeople, lenders, and organizations doing complementary work in order to demystify the building rehab process and get projects done. ETROIT D LOCAL 24 Fall 2011 Hospitality Workers Union Contract Updates • MGM Grand, Greektown and MotorCity Casino Members Ratify Four (4) Year Agreements • Detroit Club Managers Association Members Ratify Agreement • Hotel Negotiations Continue Negotiations continue at a number of our downtown properties. Local 24 negotiating committees have met over the last several weeks with Westin Book Cadillac, Hilton Garden Inn and CenterPlate @Cobo Hall. Negotiations are being scheduled at the Detroit Marriott Hotel and Sportservice @Comerica Park. After months of negotiations, contracts were ratifi ed at the MGM Grand, Greektown and MotorCity Casinos. Our members at the Westin Airport Hotel, the Detroit Metropolitain Hotel and MET Troy are still involved in tough negotiations. Unfair labor practice charges have been fi led against the Detroit Metropolitain Hotel and MET Troy. Members at LSG SkyChefs, as part of national bargaining, have been organizing to be released from mediation and secure the right to strike, if needed. Negotiations are scheduled to begin for our members at the Hyatt Hotel in December. The contract expires December 31st. A number of club contracts have now been ratifi ed, including the Detroit Club Managers Association Contract. Club contracts were also ratifi ed at Bloomfi eld Hills Country Club, Forest Lake Country Club, and Meadowbrook Country Club. Negotiations are continuing with Country Club of Detroit. Negotiations are going on during some diffi cult economic and political times, but the negotiating committees of Local 24 are fi ghting hard at the bargaining table to protect our past gains, deal with challenges of negotiating health benefi ts and costs and to further secure our future. -

1 WINTER 2014 Out on the Town highlights New Exhibitions Coming in 2014 Marking the first substantial changes in temporary exhibits at the Detroit Historical Museum since the Grand Re-Opening in November 2012, look for five new exhibits and displays opening throughout the Museum in the first months of 2014. Highlighting the new offerings is Out on the Town: Drinking and Dining in Detroit Since 1920, which opens to the public on Saturday, February 1 in the Booth Wilkinson Gallery. During the 20th century, Detroit offered drinking and dining places that reflected contemporary economic and social norms of the time. From prohibition era speakeasies, working man’s watering holes of the 1930s/40s, jazz clubs of the 1940s/50s, A 1960s party at The Roostertail (photo courtesy of The Roostertail) nightclubs of the 1950s/60s and businessmen’s restaurants of the 1970s, this exhibit will highlight many unique venues that were — and in some cases — continue to be, the places where relationships formed, deals were made and life happened. The Center Stage section of the Allesee Gallery of Culture will see the debut of Detroit Decides: Our Most Celebrated Skyscrapers, which will feature the Fisher Building, the Guardian Building and the Penobscot Building. Our popular Automotive Showplace replaces the 1963 Ford Mustang II Concept with a 1916 Packard Twin Six Touring Car owned by Henry B. Joy, who was president of the Packard Motor Car Company in Detroit. Finally, the latest installments of New to the Collection and Detroit Artists Showcase round out the Museum’s Katherine and Manya at Abick’s in Detroit latest displays. -

1 WINTER 2013 Detroit Historical Museum Re-Opens in Grand Fashion The people of metro Detroit have responded in a big way to the Grand Re-Opening of the Detroit Historical Museum, with more than 15,000 visiting during the Gala, Member Preview, Community Leaders Breakfast and the public opening weekend. Impressions were overwhelmingly positive as well, from strong media reviews to enthusiastic comments from visitors. The Gala kicked matters off with a celebrity- studded ribbon cutting (above left) and music from the Contours (below left) in a tent on Legends Plaza, Marion Hayden in the Streets of Old Detroit and Ben Sharkey in the new Allesee Gallery of Culture. Nearly 400 guests attended. The response to the Grand Re-Opening was more than a 60 percent increase compared to the Society’s smaller-scale makeover of the Museum in 2006, which generated attendance of 9,000 people.
