They also have pink legs and a pink and white beak with a black tip. Different species of flamingos live throughout the world. The American flamingo is the only one that lives in the wild. It also lives in many Caribbean islands such as the Bahamas and Cuba as well as in northern South America and parts of Mexico. Flamingos live in a habitat of low level water such as lagoons or mudflats or lakes. They are social creatures and sometimes live in large groups of as many as 10 000 birds. The flamingos get most of their food by filtering out the mud and water in their beaks to eat insects and crustaceans like shrimp. They get their pink colouring from the pigment in their food, carotene, which is the same pigment that makes carrots orange. Although we mostly think of flamingos striding in the water, they can fly as well. They have to run to gather speed before they can take off. They often fly in large groups. He looked very serious. “Hey, Big Guy,” said Dad, as he sat on his bed. “I’ve got some bad news for you. Do you think you can handle it?” “Yeah, I can handle it,” said Phillip. “What is it?” “We aren’t going to the beach this year,” said Dad. “Why not?” asked Phillip. “Since I lost my job, we just don’t have enough money for extra things,” said Dad. Phillip could tell that his father was really sad about not being able to take the family to the beach. “It’s okay, Dad,” said Phillip. “I didn’t really want to go anyway.” “Liar,” said Dad, as he playfully hit Phillip on the head with a pillow. Phillip and his father had a quick pillow fight. Then his father went out for his afternoon run. After Phillip’s father left the room, Phillip sat on the bed and thought. He thought about how much he was going to miss going to the beach. He would miss staying in a fancy hotel for a whole week, building sand castles, and playing in the beautiful green water. “There has to be something I can do about this,” thought Phillip. Phillip thought for a minute, and then he had a great idea. He remembered his friend Emily and her family had taken a staycation. Emily and her family had found a lot of fun things to do, right in the town of Summerville. Phillip ran down the stairs excitedly. He interrupted his mother, who was sitting at the table paying bills. “Mom, I’ve got a great idea!” exclaimed Phillip. “Well, tell me,” said Mom looking up from her laptop computer. “What is your great idea?” “We should take a staycation,” said Phillip. “What in the world is a staycation?” asked Mom. “A staycation is when you take a vacation in your own city or town,” explained Phillip. “My friend Emily and her family took one a few weeks ago. They did a bunch of cool things, right here in Summerville. They went to the children’s museum, the park, and whole lot of other fun places.” “Well,” said Mom. “That sounds like a great idea. We can start planning it right now.” For the next several hours, Phillip and his Mom used the internet to plan their family staycation. They planned a fun week full of hiking, biking, swimming and much, much more. After they finished planning their staycation, Phillip gave his mother a big hug. “This is going to be the best staycation ever,” said Phillip. “I can’t wait to tell Dad.” Question 3 1.What do you think is a staycation ? 2.What is the main idea of the text? 3.Who are the characters in the story? 4.Which area did Emily and her family find fun activities to do? 5.List the activities Emily did during her staycation. 6.Write a short paragraph about your ideal “staycation”. Activity 4 POEM The cupboard was closed, and the children had gone, There were only the stars in the sky looking on. When up jumped the toys and peeped out at the sky, For they were always awake – when there’s nobody by. The children were far away saying their prayers, So the toys lightly stole down the shadowy stairs, And each said to the other, “We’ll be off, you and I,” For the toys – they can speak, when there’s nobody by. So off to the city they went, two and two, To see if, perchance, any good they could do, To cheer the poor children whose lives are so sad, For the toys always try to make everyone glad.
