Rita MacNeil Ms. MacNeil, whose home is in Big Pond, Cape Breton, will receive an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.). The internationally renowned singer won the 1987 as Most Promising Female Vocalist and has received three nominations for the 1988 Juno Awards. In addition to a nomination as Female Vocalist of the Year, her album Reason to Believe brought her nominations for Composer of the Year and Best Album.

Rita MacNeil wrote her first song in 1971 while living in Toronto. She released her first album soon after, but still had to take any job she could find to support herself and her two children. She came home to Big Pond in 1978, and continued to write, sing and record. She began to tour Canada and her reputation slowly grew.

By December 1986 she had a hit album, Flying on Your Own. She represented Canada at Expo '85 in Japan and Expo '88 in Australia, as well as playing at Expo '86 in Vancouver, becoming Nova Scotia's unofficial ambassador in Canada and abroad. She has made sold-out appearances across Canada, including Halifax's Metro Centre. She has released two more albums, Reason to Believe and a Christmas special, Now the Bells Ring. All three of her most recent albums have surpassed platinum status. She performed to enthusiastic audiences in Japan last year and played her first concert in the United States in April.

Mr. L. Richard O'Hagan Mr. O'Hagan will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws (LL.D.). From 1963 to 1966 Mr. O'Hagan was Press Secretary and Special Assistant to Pearson, who was by then Prime Minister of Canada. From 1966 to 1976 Mr. O'Hagan ran the information division of Canada's embassy in Washington. During this period he expanded Canada's public information, cultural affairs and academic relations presence throughout the United States.

In 1976 Mr. O'Hagan became Pierre Trudeau's Special Advisor on Communications, in which position he ran the Prime Minister's press office and shared responsibility for speech writing.

In 1976 Mr. O'Hagan joined the Bank of Montreal as Vice-President, Public Affairs. In 1984 he became a Senior Vice-President.

Mr. O'Hagan is a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Political Involvement, and also of the Festival of Festivals and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. He was a Corporate Chairman of Saint Mary's University successful $14 million Capital Campaign. Retirements, 1989 Dean of Science, Dr. Douglas H. Williamson, and two long-time members of faculty, Professor R. Gavin Boyd, Department of Political Science, and Professor John Mackriss, Department of Modern Languages and Classics, are retiring this year.

Dr. Douglas H. Williamson Dr. Williamson came to Saint Mary's as Dean of Science in 1980. Born in England, he spent four years as an RAF pilot during the Second World War before obtaining his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in geology at Aberdeen University. He came to Canada in 1953 as an assistant professor at Mount Allison University. During this period he conducted extensive field and mineral exploration studies and published many reports and papers on his findings. He was involved in developing new geology facilities at Mount Allison and later became head of the Geology Department.

In 1966 he moved to the new Geology Department at Laurentian University, Sudbury, where his experience was invaluable in developing the facilities. He was the first faculty member to serve on the Board of Governors at Laurentian and he also served on the executive of the Council of Ontario Universities. He became Dean of Science at Laurentian in 1975.

In 1980 Dr. Williamson was appointed Dean of Science at Saint Mary's. He has been active in University affairs and on academic boards and committees, while also finding time to teach a course in geology. He has improved the research environment at Saint Mary's, and he is renowned for keeping abreast of funding sources for scientific research and encouraging faculty members to apply for this funding.

Professor R. Gavin Boyd Professor Boyd was born in Australia and received a B.A. (Honours) degree from Melbourne University. After graduating he became a research officer with the Australian Defence Department, then a research officer at the Bangkok headquarters of the South East Asia Treaty Organization. He then became a visiting professor of political science at Notre Dame University in Indiana, and later at George Washington University, Washington, D.C. In 1965 he became a research associate at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, University of Pennsylvania. In 1967 be came to Canada as a Canada Council professor at Carleton University. He came to Saint Mary's as an associate professor in the Political Science Department in 1967. During his 22 years at Saint Mary's, Professor Boyd has taught as a visiting professor at the University of Louisville, Arizona State University, at the State University of New York at Brockport, and at the University of New Orleans. He has authored, edited and co-edited a number of books on international relations. His recent publications include "Pacific Trade, Investment and Politics", and "Political Change and Foreign Policy". His papers and presentations have taken him to conferences and conventions all over North America and recently to Taiwan. Professor Boyd will continue to teach at Saint Mary's next year. Professor John Mackriss Professor Mackriss was born in Edmonton, Alberta. He received part of his secondary education in Greece. After obtaining a B A. degree from the University of Toronto, he did research in Florence, Italy, before finishing his M.A. degree at the University of Toronto. He then obtained a Bachelor of Library Science from McGill University, and, in 1978, he received a doctorate from the Universite de Paris — Sorbonne.

Before coming to Saint Mary's in 1969 Professor Mackriss' varied career included four years in the Canadian Armed Forces; a spell as Secretary of the Royal Greek Consulate in Toronto; and eight years as a librarian at Queen's University and McGill. In 1963 he joined the Faculty of the Modern Languages Department at Loyola College, Montreal. From there he moved to Saint Mary's. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1973.

Professor Mackriss' varied experiences and study led him to fluency in French, Greek and Italian, and competency in Spanish and German. He will continue to teach at Saint Mary's next year.

History of Saint Mary's University Saint Mary's University was founded in 1802 to provide opportunities for higher learning to young Catholic men. Its founder, the Reverend Edmund Burke, had meagre resources to work with but, on later being named Bishop with responsibility for Nova Scotia, he continued to support the college as essential to the development of the Catholic community. In 1841, the Nova Scotia House of Assembly gave formal recognition of its academic role. Its legal status was confirmed in perpetuity by enactment in 1852.

In 1913, the Christian Brothers of Ireland, a teaching order, were invited by the Archdiocese of Halifax to direct the college and its academic program. During the ensuing years, Saint Mary's University became more widely known for the quality of its undergraduate teaching and continued to develop new instructional programs most notably within its Faculty of Commerce. In 1940, the Upper Canada Province of The Society of Jesus was invited to succeed the Christian Brothers as administrators and teachers in the University, and for thirty years until the enactment in 1970 of the new act of incorporation, the college remained under Jesuit supervision. The long-standing emphasis on liberal arts and commerce was extended to include new programs in science, engineering, and teacher education. Extension courses became an important part of the University's commitment to an active educational role in the community.

The Ceremonial Mace The ceremonial mace, which is carried by the Marshal of Convocation at the head of the academic procession, was presented to Saint Mary's in April, 1980 and used for the first time at the 1980 Convocation. It symbolizes the University's authority to grant degrees. It was made and presented to the University by Maritime Command in recognition of Saint Mary's alumni killed in both world wars and also serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have been students at the University. The mace is made of oak with a cast brass crown and brass plates carrying traditional ceremonial engravings. The plates represent the contribution to Saint Mary's by the Jesuit Fathers, the Christian Brothers of Ireland, the Archdiocese of Halifax, the LaSalle Christian Brothers, the Lay Teachers, and the Armed Forces.

Flags on the Stage Each year Saint Mary's has a number of non-Canadians in its student body. The flags which you see displayed on the stage for Convocation are from some of the countries from which these students come, not necessarily graduating students, but those in any year of study. This international aspect of the Saint Mary's University community is a feature of justifiable pride which contributes markedly to the growth and understanding of both Canadian and non-Canadian students. Also included in the University's permanent collection of flags is one from the International Year of the Disabled signifying the University's commitment to disabled people.

W.A. Stewart, S.J., Medal for Teaching In 1983, Saint Mary's University Alumni Association created this award to recognize faculty members who have made an extraordinary contribution to the education of students through teaching in the Saint Mary's tradition of quality undergraduate education.

This Medal for Teaching is named in honor of the beloved Santamarian "whose life," said one of our alumni, "is a model of what a teacher should be." Although officially retired, Father Stewart continues to serve Saint Mary's this year by being Marshal of Convocation.

The selection committee representative of alumni, faculty and students has had regard to the following factors in making its recommendation to the association:

• Teaching ability and classroom performance; • Interaction with students; and • Extra-curricular contributions to the life of the University community

Saint Mary's University Award for Excellence in Research Established in the 1988-9 academic year, this prestigious recognition will be awarded for the first time at this year's Convocation. This annual award honors outstanding research conducted by a Faculty member who has been at Saint Mary's University for at least three years. The selection procedure requires the Award to be adjudicated by the Senate Research Committee following criteria which include productivity and recognition. In the area of productivity the nominee must have a record of continued, exceptional contributions to research/scholarship. The nominee must also have obtained national or international recognition as an authority in a major field of knowledge.
