THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography.

  • The Photography of Edward Weston
Edward Weston, American Photographer 1886-1958 Julia E. Benson ARTS 1611 (Drawing II) Spring Semester, 2001 Edward Henry Weston, widely regarded as one of the premier photographers of the twentieth century, was born on March 24, 1886, in Highland Park, IL, a suburb of Chicago. Weston’s father was a physician; his mother died while Weston was very young, so that he was primarily raised by his older sister. An indifferent student at best, Weston drifted through school until he was sixteen, when a belated birthday gift of a Kodak Bulls-Eye No. 2 box camera from his father changed his life. Photography immediately enthralled him, though he soon realized the limitations of his initial equipment and saved his money for a better camera, a 5x7-inch ground glass model with a tripod. He set up a darkroom and began spending as much time possible photographing the world around him. Almost none of Weston’s early work survives, though in the surviving work Weston’s eye for composition is evident. Lake Michigan, Chicago (1904) and Spring, Washington Park, Chicago (1903) both show a structure and organization that lifts this obviously amateur work out of the realm of the ordinary. In 1906, Weston moved to California after a visit to his sister May in Tropico (now Glendale). He began to make his living first as a surveyor, then as an itinerant photographer, which suited him well. However, that position offered an uncertain living, and he recognized the need for further study in photography. Thus, in 1909 he briefly returned to the Chicago area for the only formal art training of his life: he attended the Illinois College of Photography to develop the skills and methodology that would carry his artistic vision forward.

  • Edward Weston's Studio Nudes and Still
INTERDEPENDENT PARTS OF THE WHOLE: EDWARD WESTON‘S STUDIO NUDES AND STILL LIFES, 1925-1933 By LAURA CHRISTINE BARTON A THESIS Presented to the Department of Art History And the Honors College of the University of Oregon In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Bachelor of Arts May 2011 2 Copyright 2011 by Laura Barton 3 An Abstract of the Thesis of Laura Christine Barton for the degree of Bachelor of Arts In the department of Art History May 17, 2011 Title: INTERDEPENDENT PARTS OF THE WHOLE: EDWARD WESTON‘S STUDIO NUDES AND STILL LIFES, 1925-1933 Approved: _________________________________________ Professor Kate Mondloch Photographer Edward Weston has long been hailed as one of the heroes of modern photography and has been praised for his stunning approach to landscapes, nudes, and still-lifes. This thesis examines his treatment of the nude female form and examines the relationship that the photographs establish between the human body and the natural world. Through a series of in-depth visual and formal analyses of his early nudes and still-lifes, I show that Weston un-animated the human body, while animating the vegetables, shells, and landscapes that he photographed. Thus, he created not a vertical hierarchy where humans are placed above the natural world, but instead created a horizontal plane where all natural forms are equalized. This approach differs from most of the pre-existing scholarship on Weston, which has long interpreted his work using either the biographical method or feminist theory, both of which serve primarily to either maintain or reject Weston‘s heroic status; this paper attempts to instead explain how the photographs themselves serve to create meaning.

  • Voyage of the Eye Is a Testament to Brett Weston's
ft Afterword by Beaumont Newhall An Aperture Monograph : BrettWston \fcyageoftheEye Brett Weston's photography is marked by a strength of form. Whether it is an Alaskan glacier miles away or shards of broken glass in San Fran- cisco inches from the camera, his images seize exhilarating patterns in the natural and man-made world. In the foreword to Weston's famous "White Sands" portfolio, Nancy Newhall writes, "Instead of abstract sculpture, he saw a magic play of light grasses, ghostly in their winter death, shadowing the massive, luminous dunes with silver, the spikes and bells of yucca black as jet against them. He saw the delicate aerial structure of eerie plants reaching into the skies, the dunes grey with storm or gleaming with snow against dark distant moun- tains—endless absorbing variations!" Brett Weston has been a photographer since the day in Mexico when his father, Edward Weston, lent him a Graflex camera. That was in 1 925, just before Brett celebrated his fourteenth birthday. He absorbed technique with remarkable speed and proficiency; and his youthful prints showed such individual seeing, such craftsmanship, and such quality that his father was proud to display a group of them along with his own photographs at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1 927 and at the international exhibition "Film und Foto" in Stuttgart, Germany, two years later. Voyage of the Eye is a testament to Brett Weston's fifty years of evolving vision. It presents the photog- rapher before the infinite play of landscape, objects and forms—vivid, authentic, uncompromising. Siskind was an intellectual, who delivered opinions, sometimes caustic, but only when asked. He now saw the surrounding coast with different eyes: while he had once focused on details and still lifes, he now found himself drawn to vistas, horizons, the movement of water, and moody atmospheres of elemental power. Choose your denomination:. First Edition. This portfolio is now nearly thirty years old and continues to grow. For the past 8 years, Joey Solomon has been photographing his mother. He would choose a subject, such as nature or city street life, photograph it in a variety of ways, and then experiment with extreme contrast, double exposure, all-white and all-black prints, and much else. Callahan once showed some photographs, but he placed them on a table and kept viewers at a distance. This exhibition catalog deftly juxtaposes the art of these two masters, as well as contrasting naturalistic forms desert sand formations, vegetables close-ups against the beauty of the humans figure. Callahan did some of his most ingenious experimentation with the images of Eleanor. After overseeing construction of the new museum, he has been responsible for establishing the curatorial and artistic vision of the institution. Chronology is of little importance to understanding Callahan and the Art Institute divides up the show topically, according to the three subjects that he photographed: nature, buildings, and people.

  • The Letters BETWEEN EDWARD WESTON and WILLARD VAN DYKE $15
The Letters BETWEEN EDWARD WESTON AND WILLARD VAN DYKE $15 The Letters BETWEEN EDWARD WESTON AND WILLARD VAN DYKE The Letters between Edward Weston and Willard Van Dyke document a friendship that spanned twenty-six years from 1931 to 1957. Readers can look inside the photography of the thirties and documentary cinematog raphy of the thirties and forties- from photographers' points of view. Cameras, films, exhibitions, and expe ditions are all discussed in the letters. Willard Van Dyke met Edward Weston in September 1928. Both art ists were attending an exhibition in San Francisco at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor. Van Dyke was impressed with Weston's portrait Galvan and asked photographer John Paul Edwards to introduce him to Weston. More than a year later, in November 1929, Van Dyke traveled to Carmel to study photography with Weston. Van Dyke was just a few weeks short of his twenty-third birth day and Weston was forty-three years old. Despite the age difference, Weston and Van Dyke became friends. Weston's encouragement of Van Dyke as a young photographer and later his enthusiasm for Van Dyke's cinematography career are threads connecting the seventy-four letters included here. Some of the images and people discussed in the letters are reproduced as text illustrations. Many of the portraits are by Willard Van Dyke and have not been previously reproduced. MoMA © 2017 The Museum of Modern Art Archive MoMA " iDWARD WESTON $5.95 In the six years since Edward Weston passed away in Carmel, California, he remains in memory as a man of great spirit, integrity and power. To me he was a profound artist and friend in the deepest sense of the word. Living, as I do now, within a mile of his last home, sensing the same scents of the sea and the pine forests, the grayness of the same fogs, the glory of the same triumphal storms, and the ageless presence of the Point Lobos stone, I find it very difficult to realize he is no longer with us in actuality. Edward understood thoughts and concepts which dwell on simple mystical levels. His kwor —direct and honest as it is—leaped from a deep intuition and belief in forces beyond the apparent and the factual. He accepted these forces as completely real and part of the total world of man and nature, only a small portion of which most of us experience directly. As with any great artist or imaginative scientist, the concept is im mediate and clear, but the working out takes time, effort and conscious evaluations.
