UNESCO World Heritage properties in Switzerland February 2021 www.whes.ch Welcome Dear journalists, Thank you for taking an interest in Switzerland’s World Heritage proper- ties. Indeed, these natural and cultural assets have plenty to offer: en- chanting cityscapes, unique landscapes, historic legacies and hidden treasures. Much of this heritage was left to us by our ancestors, but nature has also played its part in making the World Heritage properties an endless source of amazement. There are three natural and nine cultur- al assets in total – and as unique as each site is, they all have one thing in common: the universal value that we share with the global community. “World Heritage Experience Switzerland” (WHES) is the umbrella organisation for the tourist network of UNESCO World Heritage properties in Switzerland. We see ourselves as a driving force for a more profound and responsible form of tourism based on respect and appreciation. In this respect we aim to create added value: for visitors in the form of sustainable experiences and for the World Heritage properties in terms of their preservation and appreciation by future generations. The enclosed documentation will offer you the broadest possible insight into the diversity and unique- ness of UNESCO World Heritage. If you have any questions or suggestions, you can contact us at any time. WHICH SIDE OF THE TRAIN SHOULD I SIT ON? BLS LÖTSCHBERG ROUTE Pages 2 to 3 JUNGFRAU REGION Pages 4 to 6 RHÄTISCHE BAHN Pages 7 to 8 The BLS line from Spiez to Brig via the original Lötschberg Tunnel. As you may already know, since the opening of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel it is now possible to travel between Spiez and Brig in less than 30 minutes. The tunnel starts at Frutigen and exits just before Visp, very quick but obviously completely lacking in scenery. A far more interesting journey is to join one of the BLS “Lötschberger” units at Spiez and go to Brig via the original tunnel between Kandersteg and Goppenstein. The journey does take about an hour but the scenery on a fine day is spectacular. The “Lötschberger” units have both low floor and higher seating areas in standard class and I hope the following guide may be of some help. Please note that if you change sides of the train too often it may annoy/mystify your fellow passengers. I am assuming you will want to sit in the direction of travel. Spiez to Reichenbach Sit on the right hand side (view of the BLS shed and after the Hondrich Tunnel the River Kander. If you stop at Mülenen Station (this is a request stop) the building itself, on the left hand side, has been renovated and you will see the terminus station of the Niesen funicular on the right). Reichenbach to Frutigen Left hand side (view over the Kiental and then as you approach Frutigen the lines for trains, both passenger and freight, going through the Base Tunnel can be seen).

  • Real Rail Adventures: Switzerland Switzerland
Real Rail Adventures: Switzerland TRANSCRIPT Jeff Wilson-On Camera: Hi, I’m Jeff Wilson, and I love trains! I’ve always been fascinated with figuring out how things work, so to me trains are irresistible—the history, the variety, the technical ingenuity. And if there’s one place that’s guaranteed to make a rail fan’s dreams come true, it has to be Switzerland! Jeff Voice-Over: Join me as crisscross a nation that seems to love trains as much as I do. Next, on Real Rail Adventures: Switzerland. Jeff OC: Why do people love trains? Is it the adrenaline rush of big machines, surging against probability up a mountainside? Jeff VO: Is it the thrill of exploration—the way they can slice through remote areas, giving us up-close views of inaccessible landscapes? Jeff VO: Maybe it’s the nostalgia, the echoes of a time gone by when trains were the lifeblood of everyday people and the station the center of every town. Jeff OC: Or maybe we love trains because they’re just plain fun! Jeff VO: As an author and host of home improvement TV shows, I’ve had lots of adventures travelling across the US. Now I’m looking for even more adventure around the world. And I can think of no better way to travel than by train. Jeff VO: Staking out the center of Europe and chiseled in high relief by the Alp mountain range, Switzerland seems to have it all: sophisticated cities, and welcoming villages; glacial summits, and flower-strewn meadows straight from the pages of Heidi.
