I have divided this study diachronically into three periods of this cultural construction, which I call the Preconstruction, Construction, and Reconstruction of Homeric authority. In this first chapter I will be analyzing the way that an oral traditional culture can transition to a literary culture, yet retain vestiges of the oral culture in its literary traditions. After surveying the relevant modern scholarship in this quest for Homeric authority, I discuss some of the methodological implications of a study involving oral traditional poetry and its receptions in literature. This chapter will be further broken down into a discussion of the methodological assumptions underlying this discussion of the interaction of oral culture and literary culture, the way an oral tradition creates meaning in context, and the way a traditional culture transmits authority. I also discuss the different types of authority, the related concept of authorship in an oral culture, and the immanence of that authority. Following the methodological chapter, I turn to Homer Preconstructed, which discusses the context of Greece in the Bronze Age 1 during which I find traces of the earliest influences of oral traditions on Greek culture. This chapter deals in part with the historical and cultural influences of the surrounding Aegean, including the Near East on the Greeks. Following the setting of the context for the earliest Greeks, I analyze the ways in which the Homeric poems discuss the implications of speech, society, and authority in order to establish the fact that in both early Greece and the Aegean as well as in the Homeric poems themselves, cultural authority was derived from speech acts. Chapter 3, Homer Constructed discusses specifically the Homeric aoidos and his relationship to society and where he derives his authority. This chapter is focused primarily on both the historical character of the aoidos as well as his depiction by Homer, Hesiod, and later authors as well as comparanda from other cultures. Chapter 4, Homer Reconstructed analyzes the reception and influence of the Homeric poems in archaic, classical, and Hellenistic Greek literature and society. This reception, as I show, illustrates the effect of the immanence of the oral traditional poetry’s influence and authority in the earlier two periods of pre-construction and construction on the literary culture of the third period, where the authority is reconstructed in the literary medium and its prevalence in literary culture. This type of approach builds somewhat on the work of many scholars who have investigated the relationship between an oral Homer and a written Homer in order to set the stage, but differs in that I look 2 not to politics as the main force behind the authority of Homer, but literary culture as well.1 I show through the reception of Homer in the literary medium the evidence of the poetic tradition’s immanence in the identity of Greek culture. Part1: The Quest For Homeric Authorship (A History of Modern Homeric Scholarship) The search for Homer was begun the moment the Iliad, Odyssey, and various poems of the Epic Cycle and the Hymns were attributed to him. Ancient attributions of authorship to Homer may have been a way to ensure the continued readership of poems whose popularity may have been fading.2 In antiquity, Homer is not always even explicitly referenced as the poet, but his authorship is often inferred. This makes an understanding of the ancient reception of Homer in any given period particularly troublesome. Various cities had claimed Homer by the fifth century.3 Homer is often referred to as “a man from Chios”,4 and regardless of any specific geographic location, the composite Greek that is featured in the Homeric poems is Ionic in origin. Nevertheless, ancient sources and scholarship were full of inconsistencies which would lead one to believe that for each scholar, city, and festival, there must have been a unique Homer. However, none of these inconsistencies “could shake the faith of antiquity in the artistic unity and high quality of the Homeric poems, or in the historical reality of Homer.”5 In an equally likely scenario to that which Burgess proposes, 6 the poems may have been attributed to Homer simply because he stood symbolically as the oral traditional poet par excellence, a situation echoed in modern South Slavic, Mongolian, and medieval English poems.7 In the latter formulation, Homer metonymically stands for the Greek oral epic tradition itself. In the 18th century F.A. Wolf, in his Prolegomena ad Homerum, asked the “Homeric Question”. This question concerned the ability of a single man to write some 27,000 lines of the Iliad and Odyssey, as well the other early hexameter poetry often attributed to him, in the Early Archaic period of Greece, when literacy appeared extremely limited and in a much different form than it did in the Classical Period. Wolf found it “impossible to accept the belief …that these two works of a single genius 5 Davis 1962 :241. 6 Burgess 2001. 7 E.g. Foley 2005, A.B Lord 1960. 4 burst forth suddenly from the darkness in all their brilliance, just as they are, with both the splendor of their parts and the many great virtues of the connected whole.”8 In the first part of the Prolegomena, Wolf suggested that the Homeric poems were first composed orally in around 950 BCE. He argued that the poems were then handed down by non- literate Greeks for approximately four centuries before being committed to writing. Though Wolf’s argument was extremely radical in the heavily Unitarian academic community9, he was not the first to suggest a lack of literacy on the part of Homer. In the first century AD, Josephus claimed that Homer was illiterate10, making Wolf's theory not the first of its kind. This “Homeric Question” initiated a sort of modern “Homeric Quest” in which Homeric scholars became divided between two academic camps.

Some of these fragments contain details about the Theban wars (the war of the SEVEN and that of the EPIGONI), others about the prowesses of Heracles 1 and Theseus, others about the origin of the gods, and still others about events related to the Trojan War. The latter, called Trojan Cycle, narrate events that occurred before the war (Cypria), during the war (Aethiopis, Little Iliad, and Sack of Ilium ), and after the war (Returns, and Telegony). The term epic (derived from Greek épos = word, song) is generally applied to narrative poems which describe the deeds of heroes in war, an astounding process of mutual destruction that periodically and frequently affects mankind. Greek Epic is the earliest surviving form of Greek (and therefore "Western") literature, and precedes lyric poetry, elegy, drama, history, philosophy, mythography, etc.

    Trojan Women: Introduction 1. Gods in the Trojan Women Two gods take the stage in the prologue to Trojan Women. Are these gods real or abstract? In the prologue, with its monologue by Poseidon followed by a dialogue between the master of the sea and Athena, we see them as real, as actors (perhaps statelier than us, and accoutered with their traditional props, a trident for the sea god, a helmet for Zeus’ daughter). They are otherwise quite ordinary people with their loves and hates and with their infernal flexibility whether moral or emotional. They keep their emotional side removed from humans, distance which will soon become physical. Poseidon cannot stay in Troy, because the citizens don’t worship him any longer. He may feel sadness or regret, but not mourning for the people who once worshiped but now are dead or soon to be dispersed. He is not present for the destruction of the towers that signal his final absence and the diaspora of his Phrygians. He takes pride in the building of the walls, perfected by the use of mason’s rules. After the divine departures, the play proceeds to the inanition of his and Apollo’s labor, with one more use for the towers before they are wiped from the face of the earth. Nothing will be left. It is true, as Hecuba claims, her last vestige of pride, the name of Troy remains, but the place wandered about throughout antiquity and into the modern age. At the end of his monologue Poseidon can still say farewell to the towers.

    COMMENTARY 1-20 Calchas on the basis of an omen declares that Troy must be taken by trickery. It is easy to assert 1 that Q. has combined the traditional detail2 of Odysseus' device ofthe Horse with Sinon's claim in Virg. A. 2. 185f. that Calchas 'ordered' the Greeks to build it. Even if the detail is Virg. 's own 3, in Q. Calchas' intervention is grounded in reality, is based on a wholly dif­ ferent set of circumstances, is strategically necessary (an effective method of crushing the stiff opposition put up by the god-fearing Neoptolemos, a motif certainly not of Q. 's own devising: 66-103n. ), and must be viewed against the background of a tradition in which oracles, prophecies and portents abound4 , and in which Calchas came to assume an increasingly dominant role 5 • Q. 's Calchas indeed (for his teaming up with Odysseus cf. the n. on 360-88, § 4 (a) (ii)) is a leading light in decision making both before and after the fall of Troy6 • His Trojan counterpart Helenos, so popular elsewhere, is virtually driven out of the action: he is a fighter viii. 252f., xi. 348f.; a seer, though not explicitly so, only in the chaotic prophecy of Hera at x. 346f. Calchas is on the scene at this point in the saga in Dictys 5. 7: he predicts that Troy will fall into Greek hands on the basis of an omen involving an eagle carrying a victim's entrails.     23 November 2017 Homer’s Iliad via the Movie Troy (2004) PROFESSOR EDITH HALL One of the most successful movies of 2004 was Troy, directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starring Brad Pitt as Achilles. Troy made more than $497 million worldwide and was the 8th- highest-grossing film of 2004. The rolling credits proudly claim that the movie is inspired by the ancient Greek Homeric epic, the Iliad. This was, for classical scholars, an exciting claim. There have been blockbuster movies telling the story of Troy before, notably the 1956 glamorous blockbuster Helen of Troy starring Rossana Podestà, and a television two-episode miniseries which came out in 2003, directed by John Kent Harrison. But there has never been a feature film announcing such a close relationship to the Iliad, the greatest classical heroic action epic. The movie eagerly anticipated by those of us who teach Homer for a living because Petersen is a respected director. He has made some serious and important films. These range from Die Konsequenz (The Consequence), a radical story of homosexual love (1977), to In the Line of Fire (1993) and Air Force One (1997), political thrillers starring Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford respectively. The Perfect Storm (2000) showed that cataclysmic natural disaster and special effects spectacle were also part of Petersen’s repertoire. His most celebrated film has probably been Das Boot (The Boat) of 1981, the story of the crew of a German U- boat during the Battle of the Atlantic in 1941. The finely judged and politically impartial portrayal of ordinary men, caught up in the terror and tedium of war, suggested that Petersen, if anyone, might be able to do some justice to the Homeric depiction of the Trojan War in the Iliad.

    Edin Muftić Homer: An Arabic portrait1 Homer is rightfully seen as the first teacher of Hellenism, the poet who educated the Greek, who in turn educated Europe. But, as is well known, Europe doesn’t have a monopoly on Greek heritage. It was also present in the Islamic tradition, where it manifested itself differently. Apart from phi- losophy, mathematics, astronomy, medicine and pharmacology, Greek poetry, even if usually not translated, was also widely read among the Arab-Islamic intellectual elite. The author analyses the extent to which Homer’s works circulated, how well known were his poetics, and the influence his verses exerted during the heyday of Classical Arab-Islamic civilization. Keywords: Homer; translation movement; Al-Biruni; arabic poetry; Al-Farabi; Averroes INTRODUCTION The Greek and Arab epic tradition have much in common. Themes of tribal enmity, invasions and plunder, abduction of women, revenge, heroism, chivalry and love feature prom- inently in both traditions. While the Greeks have Hercules, Perseus, Theseus, Odysseus, Jason or Achilles, the Arabs have ʻAntar bin Šaddād (the “Arab Achilles”), Sayf bin ī Yazan, Az-Zīr Sālim and many others. When it comes to the actual performance of poetry, similarities be- Ḏ tween the two traditions are even greater. Homeric aoidos playing his lyre has a direct coun- terpart in Arab rawin playing his rababa. The Arab wandering poet often shares the fate of his Greek colleague (Imruʼ al-Qays, arafa and Al-Aʻšá, and Abū Nuwās and Al-Mutanabbī are the most famous examples). Greek tyrants who were famous for hosting poets like Ibycus, Anacre- Ṭ on, Simonides, Bacchylides or Pindar, while expelling others like Alcaeus, have a royal counter- part in An-Nuʻmān bin al-Mun ir, the ruler of Hira.

We have also made several additions to previous issues. In the past years the BEGR had often summarized publications which were not primarily of epigraphie nature, thus tending to expand into an unavoidably incomplete bibliography of Greek religion. From this issue on we return to the original scope of this bulletin, whieh is to provide information on new epigraphie finds, new interpretations of inscriptions, epigraphieal corpora, and studies based p;imarily on the epigraphie material. Only if we focus on these types of books and articles, will we be able to present the newpublications without delays and, hopefully, without too many omissions.

Introduction The Greek symposium, or private drinking party, was a formal context for the consumption of wine, often accompanied by the enactment of ritual activities or other associated forms of entertainment.1 The tradition of symposia seems to have evolved from group feasts in the Archaic period and from the traditional gathering of hetaireiai in the late Archaic period.2 Generally, men would congregate in the andron of a private home and recline on kline for a night of drinking, singing or poetry composition, discussion, or other games.3 While meals that shared aspects of the Archaic symposium were held in public spaces in Athens by the fifth century, symposia remained the preserve of the elites: the aristocracy had a monopoly on sympotic symbolic capital, despite any popularizing elements of polis-wide feasting.4 The term “symposium” is often used synecdochically for the series of ritual activities that takes place over the course of a single gathering; however, it more accurately relates to the time when wine was consumed during a private party. If food was prepared before the drinking began, this meal, the deipnon, was a distinct and separate ritual element of the party.5 After the consumption of food, a hymn was sung in honor of the gods and libations were poured.
