MEDIA RELEASE 8 November 2017 WOMEN’S ASHES IN CANBERRA Canberrans are being encouraged to attend the upcoming Women’s Ashes matches at Manuka Oval, which could decide the outcome of what has been a tremendous series so far. Manuka will host the final two matches of the series – T20 contests on Sunday 19 November and Tuesday 21 November. “As the local cricket charity in the ACT, the Lord’s Taverners is throwing its weight behind the efforts of Cricket ACT and Cricket Australia to attract big crowds to both matches,” said the President of the Lord’s Taverners ACT, Ric Smith. “Fans will see plenty of exciting cricket and will be supporting young and disadvantaged local cricketers and other athletes – through the Lord’s Taverners – at the same time. “A small donation from every ticket sold to the matches will go to the Lord’s Taverners Foundation. Alex Blackwell
Alex Blackwell Australian Cricketer, Inspiring Leader and Keynote Speaker Alex Blackwell is a change agent and disruptor of Australian sport. A professional cricketer who has played more matches for Australia than any other female cricketer in history, she captained the Australian Women’s Team to World Twenty20 glory in 2010 and reclaimed the Ashes against England in 2011. Drawing on her experience, Alex inspires audiences to reach and sustain success through innovation, adaptability, taking calculated risks and leadership. She talks her decision to pursue cricket over and above a career in medicine, choosing to become a leader, teaching others and learning to do things differently. Alex has captained of one of the most successful sporting teams in Australia, the Lend Lease NSW Breakers. In January 2015 the Breakers won their 10th consecutive Women’s National Cricket League title. She is one of only two players to feature in all 10 consecutive wins and she was captain in the last five. In January 2016 Alex captained the Sydney Thunder to victory in the groundbreaking inaugural Women’s Big Bash League and she will lead the Thunder again in WBBL02. Alex has successfully combined elite sport with academic pursuits. She studied medicine at the University of New South Wales from 2002 to 2005 before making a difficult decision to leave the course to pursue her cricketing dreams. Alex changed her career direction to become a genetic counsellor, working for three years in prenatal screening before becoming a full time professional cricketer in October of 2014. Well into her international cricket career, Alex remains at the top of her game.

MEDIA RELEASE Haynes joins new faces in 2011/12 Lend Lease Breakers 1 June 2011 A number of new faces have been named in the Lend Lease Breakers squad for 2011/12, including former Victorian captain, Rachael Haynes. Selectors have chosen a squad of 22 this season. In a change from previous years, players from the Breakers Development squad will now be included in the Lend Lease Breakers squad, giving younger players more opportunity to work alongside seasoned international cricketers like Alex Blackwell, Leah Poulton and Lisa Sthalekar. Not all people who are not heterosexual or cisgender will identify under/within the LGBTI acronym. • Lesbian: A female whose primary emotional and sexual attraction is towards other females. • Gay: A person whose primary emotional and sexual attraction is towards people of the same sex. The term is most commonly applied to males, although some females use this term. • Bisexual: A person who is emotionally, sexually attracted persons of the same and opposite sex. • Transgender: Transgender (sometimes shortened to “trans”) is an umbrella term used to describe a wide range of gender identities that differ from the perceived norms aligned to biological sex. Transgender is a term that may be used to describe someone whose gender identity does not match their birth gender, someone who identifies as both genders, neither gender or a third gender. • Intersex: Intersex people are born with physical, hormonal or genetic features that are neither wholly female nor wholly male, or a combination of female and male. • Cis or Cisgender: A term used to describe when a person’s gender identity matches social expectations for their sex assigned at birth; the opposite of transgender. It is unclear how this term relates to people with intersex variations, if at all.
