No lineup is set until it proves successful. At UCLA, success is measured in national championships. Following are capsule summaries of UCLA’s personnel for the 2009 season.

SETTERS No team in the MPSF boasts a pair of quality setters who can run an off ense with equal effi ciency. Senior Matt Wade started 24 matches last season and fi gures to be one of the top setters in the conference this season. Junior Kevin Ker played in 30 matches last season and recorded seven starts. “We’re fortunate to have two quality setters,” said Scates. “Whoever starts will be the one who is playing the best in practice that week.” Practice performance also means consistent serving. Th e starkest contrast between Ker and Wade lies in their success at the service line. Wade served nine aces last season, but made just 24 errors. His short fl oat serve creates problems for many opponents when it drops in front of the 10-meter line. Ker serves bullets to both sidelines, and recorded 14 aces as a sophomore. However, his 67 errors kept him out of the lineup at times. When he’s hot, he can be an ace machine, as when he recorded 18 aces in the fi nal 16 matches of the 2007 season. “Kevin has the ability to run off points in bunches,” said Scates. “Statistically, Matt is a better blocker. Th ey both have diff erent strengths.” In a match last season against UC Santa Barbarra, Ker recorded a career-high 70 assists, the most by a Bruin setter in six years. As a junior, Wade boasted nine matches of 50 assists or more, and ranked 14th nationally at 12.26 assists per game. His career total of 2,460 assists ranks third on UCLA’s rally-scoring charts; Ker ranks fourth at 1,369.

OPPOSITES Last season, the Bruins did not have an adequate replacement for Steve Klosterman, the school’s all-time rally scoring leader. Th is season, 6-8 true freshman Kyle Caldwell has earned the starting spot, and raised expectations. “Kyle’s a player who can do everything,” said Scates. “He’s a hitter, a passer, a blocker and a setter. Th ere will be times when we’ll need another passer, and he will help us in that area. He’s also a great jump server.” Having a second “fi ve-tool” player not only provides UCLA with more off ensive weaponry, it forces opponents to spread their defense and respect the entire lineup. Th is was evident in Canada where UCLA received balanced scoring and high attack percentages from its opposite and outside hitter positions. Junior setter Kevin Ker

QUICK HITTERS So intense is the com- petition at this position that last year’s 24-game starter — 6-7 senior D.J. Stromath — has been edged out at both spots by a pair of underclass- men. Six-foot, eight-inch sophomore Weston Dunlap and 6-9 true freshman Nick Vogel have assumed start- ing roles, despite Stromath’s experience. What the Bruins gain in these two youngsters is quickness.
