However, George's talent, resilience, and genuine affability have seen him through his band's breakup, his own drug addiction, an unexpected solo comeback, and a 1998 reunion with Culture Club. Retaining his sense of style and eclecticism throughout, George has proved he is not merely a stage persona, but also a real original and a gay pioneer. Born in Bexleyheath, a cheerless section of South London, on June 14, 1961, George Alan O'Dowd was the third of six children born to working class Irish parents. His father, a builder and boxing coach, and his mother, who worked in a nursing home, had little attention to spare to give emotional support to their children, especially little George, who showed signs of being "different" from a very early age. He often showed up at church in outlandish hats and platform shoes. Indeed, the eccentric clothes he wore to school got him assigned to a class for incorrigibles.

During the early ’80s, the group racked up seven straight Top Ten hits in the U.K. and six Top Ten singles in the U.S. with their light, infectious pop-soul. Though their music was radio-ready, what brought the band stardom was Boy George, the group’s charismatic, cross- dressing lead singer. George dressed in flamboyant dresses and wore heavy makeup, creating a disarmingly androgynous appearance that created a sensation on early MTV. George also had a biting wit and frequently came up with cutting quips that won Culture Club heavy media exposure in both America and Britain. Although closely aligned with the new romantics — they were both inspired by Northern soul and fashion — Culture Club had a sharper pop sense than their peers, and consequently had a broader appeal. However, their time in the spotlight was brief. Not only could they not withstand the changing fashions of MTV, but the group was fraught with personal tensions, including Boy George’s drug addiction. By 1986, the group had broken up, leaving behind several singles that rank as classics of the new wave era. The son of a boxing club manager, Boy George (b. Cable televi- T sion and video stations such as MTV allowed fans to see their favorite stars performing any time of the day or night. Many talented rock singers, particularly those who were also good dancers, became superstars overnight when their performances were viewed as well as heard by their fans: Prince, Madonna, and the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, are only some of the most prominent of those stars. Another trend of the early eighties was a pop style called New Romanticism, which started in British nightclubs of the late-seventies and popularized a kind of fl amboy- antly androgynous image in the eighties. New Romanticism included such bands as Duran Duran (early in their career), the Culture Club, and Bow Wow Wow. Different from the androgynous look of some punk and metal performers of the seventies, the New Romantics wore makeup, but dressed in frilly, lacy, shirts and jackets infl uenced by nineteenth-century Victorian fashions. Other looks were soon added to the style. New Romanticism didn’t last long, but it added an important new look and pop musi- cal style to the decade.
