Course Description Understanding and appreciation of music literature. Classic, Romantic, and Modern styles studied through the works of composers of those periods. General Objectives of the Course To gain a better understanding of the musical concepts that define music. To learn to recognize the music in an historical and cultural context. To gain a better understanding of the instruments and playing techniques that are common music. To gain an understanding of musical form in music. To develop a heightened musical consciousness through class analysis of listening examples. Connecticut's Watchdogs
CHAPTER SEVEN Connecticut’s Watchdogs he role of media in covering Connecticut politics was not one Tof the topics in the first edition of this book. This was not due to a lack of respect for the media on the part of the author. Instead, at the time the first edition was written it seemed as if the media were essentially reporting and describing developments in Connecticut politics, rather than aggressively investigating what issues were behind or beneath reported stories. However, between the writing of the first and second editions, a period of approximately six years, the media in Connecticut appeared to assume a new and quite different role in their coverage of Connecticut politics. “Investigative journalism,” a term associated with reporters such as Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of the Washington Post, now seemed to characterize the reporting of several media outlets in Connecticut. Unearthing and exposing political scandals now became a fairly common activity for political reporters in Connecticut, with newspapers in particular at the forefront of this intriguing development. Much to their credit, newspapers, more than any other information source in the state of Connecticut, appear to be serving as the true “watchdogs” over Connecticut’s political system. Thus, it would be remiss for a fresh text on Connecticut government not to devote a chapter to the challenging tasks and noble efforts of those individuals known as investigative journalists. Quite frankly, were it not for the work of investigative newspaper journalists employed by 144 CONNECTICUT’S WATCHDOGS local newspapers, deceitful and corrupt public officials, several of whom have wielded extraordinary power at the state and local level government, would continue to degrade and blemish Connecticut’s long tradition of good government. -

Inclement Weather Policy
MIDDLESEX COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO: College Community FROM: David W. Sykes, Dean of Finance and Administration RE: College Closings, Delayed Openings and Early Release due to Inclement Weather This is a reminder of the process for when the College may be closed, have a delayed opening or an early release due to inclement weather conditions. Please note that the factors that determine College closings, delayed openings, and early release are different for our College than those that affect a high school, elementary school, business or other agencies. More importantly please be aware that most of the radio and TV station weather ‘codes’ were designed to assist the K through 12 system, and therefore may have limited relevance to the College’s specific situation. We try to use codes that most closely reflect the status of the College. The President has authority to direct College closings due to local weather conditions or other emergency situations. Previously weather related closings were directed by the Governor and while the Governor still has the authority to close state agencies due to weather emergencies, the President now has the authority to direct College Closings, Delayed Openings and Early Release. Individual faculty members are not authorized to cancel classes due to weather conditions. College Closing When the Governor asks that “non-essential” state employees not report to work due to extreme adverse weather or other emergency condition, Middlesex Community College will be closed. When the Governor asks that “non-essential” state employees delay their arrival at work until after the usual opening time for their agency due to extreme adverse weather or other emergency condition, Middlesex will also have delayed openings. -
