COLLEGIANS RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB 1890— 1990 by PIERRE PAUL FRY Published by Collegians Rugby Football Club, Belfast, and printed by Nelson & Knox (N.I.) Ltd. BELFAST: 1989 it FOREWORD One does not proceed very far into the research on Collegians Rugby Football Club without realising the depth and the degree to which Collegians owes its survival and existence to the generosity and benevolence of Charles Seaver Neill. Collegians is synomonous with Charlie Neill. Appropriately, the present pavilion at Deramore Park is a tangible memorial to him. It was my privilege to have known him and to have played rugby at Collegians when he was very much the dominating personality. When you met him you saw either the obvious gentleman with old world charm and courtesy or a man with commanding presence, he was over six feet tall and straight in stature, forbidding, even autocratic, but whichever mood he was in you may be sure that underneath his exterior was a most sympathetic and understanding nature. In conversation when he was invariably extolling the virtues of Collegians, he spoke with a distinct, pulsating and passionate voice. Charlie Neill was the great Collegian. I wish to thank many people and sources from which I have had assistance in the compilation of this work. My first acknowledgement must be made to the Belfast Newsletter, the Belfast Telegraph, the Ireland's Saturday Night, the Northern Whig, the Linenhall Library and the Central Library for permission to use their files for reports and results of matches. My thanks are also due to the Methodist College, Belfast for access to its archives, mainly for the records of the early years.

10 | SPORT | RUGBY S1 Sunday Independent 6 March 2016 Always check the background The 70 so-called experts lack the qualifications or experience to dictate to us about rugby injuries NEIL FRANCIS HIS one is about failure in the media, more specifically failure to question. I read the financial press every day. On a regular basis TI come across articles where I am told that some Gordon Gekko-type hedge fund principal or financier tells us he is really worried and he thinks sterling will devalue by two or three per cent in the next month. The explanations as to why this will happen are somewhat plausible but please . no panic. There is no byline, no author, and no references — nothing under the piece to suggest any attribution. We have no idea where it came from or who penned it. It just appeared. There is nothing to substantiate it or no counter-argument or editorial to challenge it. So we read it and repeat it to our mates. I see Gordon Gekko says sterling will devalue by two or three per cent in the next month. It then becomes a fact. What is indisputable is that it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. The boys have all short positions in place and when the forest fire starts, they collect. A month later we are all blown away. That fella Gordon Gekko is a bloody genius. Put something out there in the newspaper and if nobody checks or challenges it, well then it is a fact. Wednesday evening came slowly and my editor calls.

Layout by Kieran Dwyer. “In the beginning” A Celebration of One Hundred Years of Dolphin R.F.C. 2002 - 2003 © 2002 Dolphin Rugby Football Club 1st Edition Printed in Cork, Ireland by Watermans Printers Acknowledgments With the Centenary season fast approaching I was approached by Paddy Clery, Club President 2001/2002, to work on the club history. “Sure you have a lot of it done already”, referring to a few paragraphs I had done for the Club Newsletter. What a “hospital pass” it turned out to be. Where do you start on such a project, the club records were destroyed in a fire many years ago. Jerry Healy started on the Club History a few years ago, with the aid of our oldest member Sidney Mahony. He put together the short history which was contained in club programmes and membership cards over the past few years. Sidney has been very helpful; he can remember the mid 1920’s as if it were only yesterday. In recognition of this, the title of this book is the same - “In the beginning”. A Club is only as strong, interesting and colourful as it’s members. During my research I found many fascinating stories about “The People of Dolphin”. What I hope is that I have been able to capture these stories and do the many characters justice. This book could not be written without the assistance of many people, but where does one start.
