Abstract During the 1850s there was rising concern in the Society of Friends about declining membership. From the 1840s attempts were made to obtain hard statistics on adherence and in the late 20th century another decline again reduced numbers to the level of the 1850s and 1860s. This thesis reviews and analyses data from the middle of the 19th century to 2012, illuminating variation in both membership and participation in church worship and governance. It presents new data on participation in meeting for worship and provides geographical and socio- metric data on the origins of enquiries about Quakerism, providing both a research tool for further work by bringing large volumes of information together and illuminating the ways in which the size and the social structure of the Society of Friends has varied with time.

Hamm Earlham College, Richmond, USA ABSTRACT One of the distinctive features of Quakerism from the 1650s until the 1870s was its stance against any kind of pay for ministers, what Friends referred to as 'hireling ministry'. Friends viewed a paid, authoritative pastoral ministry as contrary to Scripture, as tending toward preaching that pleased humans rather than God, as limiting the leadings of the Holy Spirit, and as generally corrupting. One of the criticisms of Orthodox by Hicksite Friends in the 1820s was that the Orthodox were compromising this testimony by associating with clergy of other denominations in reform and humanitarian causes, and both Orthodox and Hicksite Friends in the United States invoked this tradition to discourage Friends from joining abolition societies after 1830.

English ministers visiting in America sided with one group of Friends and denounced the others as unsound. Thus it seemed reasonable and proper to recognize the yearly meetings called "Orthodox," and to ostracize the other branch called "Hicksite," which meant they were no longer to be thought of as Quakers. As other splits came in the United States, the British Friends chose in each situation to recognize one branch and ostracize the others.

Paul Anderson Sometimes evil results from seeking to do particular harm or general malevolence, but usually this is not the case. Evil, perceived or actual, is often a factor of moral compromises made in the name of furthering an alternategood. Deception, violence, incompetence, dishonesty, greed, coercion, intemperance, and such biblically-named vices as lasciviousness, concupiscence, and licentiousness, get rationalized in the name of good. Even such positive virtues as family, home, nation, religion, progress, defense, and liberation get yoked to questionable means, and this is the only way evil can be tolerated. It does not cease, however, to be evil, which is why this subject is vitally important. This chapter considers the role of appeals to continuing revelation in the furthering of good and the legitimation of evil.

  • The Beacon Separation
    THE BEACON SEPARATION n the year 1818 an experiment in the formal teaching and expounding of the Scriptures was in progress at the Friends' school I at Ackworth. It was designed to provide the basis for a new system of religious instruction, incorporating the use of a catechism on knowledge gained by reading and study and contained the implication that faith could be acquired by the exercise of the powers of reason. It met with much criticism from conservatively minded Friends and John Barclay* wrote several letters to the school committee, saying that they were 'as it were putting the Cart before the Horse, teaching Children to profess a set of doctrinal truths before their minds are altogether ready and ripe to profess such belief; Barclay also considered that 'we are in danger of having a set of young formalists rise about us, whose heads are more likely to be filled with notions than with that nothingness of self which is as truly the introduction to all right knowledge on these subjects as the other is a snare and a stumbling block in the way of it.' The experiment, revolutionary in itself and clearly showing the influence of evangelicalism, was a straw in the wind, indicating how a breach in the unity of the Society might be expected to develop. Thirteen years before the Ackworth experiment the gentle and sincere Henry Tuke of York had published a short book entitled Tuke's Principles of Religion, which proved very popular and ran into ten editions by 1828. In his introduction to his book Henry Tuke directed his readers to Barclay's Apology, but he departs from Barclay in two important particulars.

    Historical background Source Notes: Much of the following material is based on or quoted from the excellent “Guide to the Records of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in New England” published by the RI Historical Society in 1997 and compiled by Richard D. Stattler, New England Yearly Meeting Archivist and partially sponsored by the Obadiah Brown Benevolent Fund and other supporters. INTRODUCTION HISTORICAL OVERVIEW Quakers are members of a religious group that began in England in the 1640s. The formal name is the ‘Religious Society of Friends’. Quakers did not separate religious life and secular life. They felt that all could live together in peace if they followed the Holy Spirit. Quakers, or Friends have been known for their religious testimonies against war and slavery, and in support of simplicity and social justice. Many early leaders of the anti-slavery, anti-war and woman’s rights movements have been Quakers. FRIENDS ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE The Society of Friends is organized in several layers of "meetings." A congregation which today may call itself a "church" has a Monthly Meeting to take care of its business. The term Monthly Meeting is used to refer to both the monthly event and the group that holds it. In the past there were also Preparative or Particular meetings which prepared matters for presentation at the Monthly Meeting. In addition, small settlements of Friends were sometimes allowed to have their own Meeting for Worship or Indulged Meeting for Worship. These small groups were "under the care of" a Monthly Meeting. A basic understanding of the administrative structure is fundamental to comprehending much of the language and terminology of the Society of Friends.
