Saltburn Parochial Church Council Emmanuel Church Annual Report 2016 Emmanuel Saltburn Introduction – Rev’d Adam Reed (Vicar) Welcome to the Annual Report for 2016. I hope you find in it much that is encouraging, and gain a sense that the grace and gifts of God have been present in the life, worship and fellowship of Emmanuel Church during the year. REVD ADAM YOUNG: We officially said goodbye to Adam in July 2016 after four years as curate. We are thankful for his time and presence at Emmanuel, and for what he contributed to the life of the church. At the time of writing Adam is still searching for his next ministerial appointment, so we continue to pray for him. NEW MARSKE: Relationships between Emmanuel and St Thomas continue to develop, as we all become more familiar with each other. The habit of joining together for worship on the 5th Sunday of the month became established in 2016, and will hopefully continue into the future. It remains to be seen what the LYCIG process will achieve in helping both churches to grow together. OPEN CHURCH: It has been wonderful to see how many people at Emmanuel have joined the OPEN CHURCH welcome team. They have given up their time to make sure the church is kept open for visitors from Saltburn and further afield. These people have explored the church, some have remembered important events in their lives such as marriages or baptisms of their children, and others to have found a place they can just sit in peaceful contemplation! ALL ENGAGE 2016: In January we began All EngAge, a programme of themed services for all ages to worship together. In 2016 we focused on – ‘A Journey through the Word’ – telling the biblical story from Genesis through to Revelation. At Emmanuel the service took place on the 4th Sunday of the month in ECHO. It has been a learning curve, but helpfully allowed meaningful All Age worship to take place on a regular basis in the parish. Furthermore, St Thomas followed the All EngAge programme on the 2nd Sunday of the month. LYCIG: ‘Leading Your Church Into Growth’ began with a 4 day conference in September for clergy and parishioners. It provided much to ponder regarding growth in numbers, spiritual commitment and service in the wider community. The PCC’s of Emmanuel and St Thomas appointed representatives from both parishes to form a LYCIG Leadership Team. This group will be responsible for presenting the LYCIG material to the churches in 2017, with the intention of drawing up a Plan 4 Growth (P4G). SUNDAY & TUESDAY SERVICES: The main addition to the regular worshipping life of Emmanuel was the All EngAge service (see above). The highlight of our teaching through planned sermon series was the study on Ephesians that took place in the autumn. This provided much thought and reflection, which was taken further by a number of Home Group studies. On Tuesday mornings we split the year in two; from January to June looking at Mark’s Gospel and July to December the Book of Exodus. Both have been equally challenging and encouraging. Thank you to everybody who contributes their gifts and their time preparing and serving during our services from beginning with a warm welcome from our welcomers to the worshipful music from our musicians. THANK YOU: thank you to everyone who played a part, large or small, to the life of Emmanuel in 2016. There are too many people involved to thank everyone by name, I particularly need to thank Adam & Julie my colleagues, Sue & Steph the churchwardens, George the treasurer, Christine the parish administrator, the PCC members and the retired clergy. The ministry of the church in all its forms needs the generous and committed service of all its members. Leadership: The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of Emmanuel Church has the responsibility of cooperating with the vicar in promoting, in the parish of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, the whole Mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical, and striving to ensure that all the Church’s activities and energies promote the aims of the Church’s agreed Mission statement “To grow in the love of God, and to share it with others”. The PCC also has maintenance responsibilities for the fabric of the Church building on Windsor Rd, and for the adjacent Church Hall and grounds. Safeguarding Statement: “Saltburn PCC has complied with the duty under section 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016 (duty to have regard to House of Bishop’s guidance on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults)” Membership of the Parochial Church Council (PCC): Members of the PCC are either ex-officio or elected for a three-year period by the Annual Parochial Church Meeting with the exception of the Treasurer and Secretary who are elected for an annual term of office, in accordance with the Church Representation Rules. Representatives on the Deanery Synod: (from APCM 2014) Mrs M Brignall, Mr S Hall, Mr N Pictor (also on Diocesan Synod) Elected Members: Mr G Brignall (Treasurer), Mrs C Hall (Secretary) Elected APCM 2013: (Until APCM 2016) Mrs A Elgood, Mr M Gladders, Mrs J Guy, Mrs C Hall Elected APCM 2014: (Until APCM 2017) Mr R Elgood, Mr B Hollingworth, Mrs S Nicholson, Mrs P Passman Elected APCM 2015: (Until APCM 2018) Mrs A Findlay, Mr S Hall, Mrs A Hullah, Mrs M Wieland, Mr R Weddell (1 Year Term) Elected APCM 2016: (Until APCM 2019) Mr P Jones, Mr M Marsden, Mr R Weddell (2 year term) (2 vacancies) LEADERSHIP COMMITTEES: Leadership Review of the Year: The full PCC met 8 times for spiritual fellowship and business during the year. At the meetings there were regular briefings on the financial state of the church as well as reports from our Deanery and Diocesan synod representatives. Standing Committee: This is the only Committee required by law. It has power to transact the business of the PCC between its meetings, subject to any direction given by the Council. The Standing Committee is responsible for drafting the Annual Budget for approval by the PCC. It comprises the Vicar, the Curate, the Churchwardens, the PCC Treasurer and one PCC Member Churches Together in Saltburn: Three parishioners represent Emmanuel Church on the ‘Churches Together in Saltburn’ Committee. Church Attendance The Church Electoral Roll was updated in March 2016 with a total of 143 parishioners a decrease of 7. The average adult Sunday attendance over the year was 92 and an average of 7 children. The figures for adult attendance have remained the same and children remained the same, the average adult Tuesday attendance has increased by 5 to 25. The Church employs an invaluable part-time Administrator Christine Pollard. The Verger is Peter Jones, ably assisted by Betty Jones. Sue Scope is employed part time as Caretaker/Cleaner for ECHO. COMMUNITY GROUPS, COMINGS AND GOINGS… The Men’s Breakfast, PCC, the church shop, “Thirst 4 Thought” discussion group meet at The Marine, Mothers’ Union, Morning Prayer, Bible Studies, Lent Course and Home Groups are where we build community and grow in discipleship. Andy Pollard organised a men’s weekend away at Lindisfarne bringing together friends from many other churches, bringing back reports of laughter & learning. Djenane Watkins organised a similar weekend for women in Amsterdam in December. Visitors continue to respond to invitations to join events and services publicised on our website: www.emmanuelsaltburn.co.uk and Facebook page. Rainbows, Brownies & Guides comprising approximately 50 children, made use of the Church Hall on Wednesday evenings. An Exercise Class met every Tuesday morning attended by a mixed age group from the town as well as Zumba Gold on a Monday evening The Mothers’ Union has met throughout the year. The Saltburn Folk Festival event made use of the hall in August. The Women’s Institute used the hall for several events including the Craft and Produce Show with the Allotment Association. The U3A use ECHO regularly for their committee meeting and have classes including Italian, play reading, writing, French, singing for pleasure, music appreciation, card craft, knitting and crochet. Other community groups such as the Saltburn Diving Club, SARA, Saltburn Miniature Railway, Friday Friends, individual small groups and businesses use the hall for various meetings and training sessions throughout the year. The Table Top and Collectors Fairs are always popular and very well supported by the community and have contributed to the fabric fund in 2016. Our ArtSpace exhibition area was used for the “Uncontainable – Designed to Amaze” Exhibition and a small pop up exhibition for Christmas. The exhibitions always attract many visitors to the church enabling us to express our journey of faith to the wider community. Open Church attracted 922 visitors during 2016 and encourages people to view the art exhibition, to enjoy and explore the architecture of the church building and to spend some time just being in Church and offering prayers to God. Members of the church continued to be involved in the work of ‘Doorways’ along with members of other Churches in the town. Our half-termly Breakfast Drop In, offering a free breakfast to Saltburn, has continued to grow following a lull in numbers early in 2016 with many new faces. We held our Christingle service which encouraged families attending the local primary school to support the Children’s Society.
