  • “We Exist to Receive and Share the Love of God”
“We exist to receive and share the love of God” Thank you to everyone for your support and prayers as I continue on this physical journey of 309 miles and we spiritually journey together in prayer to Lindisfarne. I have been very grateful for the prayerful support of those whose holy sites I have visited this week. At the end of last week I had physically walked to and prayed around Lees New Road, Alt Hill Lane and the Oldham to Ashton Greenway cycle path, the Ashton to Oldham Greenway Cycle Path to Alexandra Park and back, Knot Hill Reservoir, Hollingworth Lake and Hurst Cemetery. I walked a total of 26.73 miles bringing the total walked to 247.79 miles. I started last week spiritually walking towards St Peter’s Monkwearmouth, after arriving there I went on to arrive at St Paul’s Jarrow and then Newcastle Cathedral, and began the journey to St Cuthbert’s Bedlington which was 4.31 miles away. This week I have physically walked and prayed along High Crompton, Burnedge, Milnrow, Newhey and Shaw, Hurst Cemetery (twice), Dove Stones Reservoir on an imaginative journey around Lake Galilee with Revd’s Penny and David Warner of Stalybridge and Mossley, and again on another occasion simply walking and praying on my own and a blustery walk around Hollingworth Lake. As the new week begins…I spiritually reach St Cuthbert’s Bedlington and begin the spiritual journey to Alnmouth Friary 2.87 miles away. I hope that you will continue to walk with me on this spiritual pilgrimage and that you will make use of this booklet in your prayer over the coming week.

  • See of Dorchester Papers
From the Bishop of Oxford As a Diocese, we are prayerfully seeking the person whom God is calling to be the next Bishop of Dorchester, one of three Area bishops in the Diocese of Oxford. At the heart of our vision we discern a call to become a more Christ-like Church for the sake of God’s world: contemplative, compassionate and courageous. Most of all we are seeking a new Bishop for Dorchester who will seek to model those qualities and inspire the Church of England across the Dorchester Area to live them out in our daily lives. Our new Bishop will therefore be a person of prayer, immersed in the Scriptures and the Christian tradition, able to be at home with and to love the clergy, parishes and benefices in many different church traditions and many different social contexts. We are seeking a person able to watch over themselves in a demanding role and to model healthy and life-giving patterns of ministry. We want our new bishop to be an inspiring leader of worship, preacher and teacher in a range of different contexts and to be a pastor to the ministers of the Area. The Bishop of Dorchester leads a strong and able Area Team in taking forward the common vision of the Diocese of Oxford in the Dorchester Area. Full details of that process can be found in these pages and on our diocesan website. We are therefore seeking a Bishop who can demonstrate commitment and experience to our diocesan priorities. The Bishop of Dorchester holds a significant place in the civic life of the area: we are therefore seeking a bishop who is able to make a confident contribution to wider society beyond the life of the church in civil, ecumenical and interfaith engagement and who is able to live and articulate the Christian gospel in the public square.

  • Parish Profile
1 Parish Profile 2018 Church of the Ascension Penrith Road, Berwick Hills Middlesbrough TS3 7JR 2 A letter from the Churchwardens. Thank you for looking at our parish profile. In the pages that follow, you can see how the people of the parish of the Ascension describe their community and church, and the possibilities they see for moving forward in company with their new priest. The parish was led for over 20 years by Canon David Hodgson, who died in office in October 2016. He was a much loved larger-than-life character who is greatly missed by parishioners and by colleagues across the diocese. David laid a secure foundation of sacramental worship, prayer and study, and that legacy is something that we would all want to see honoured in the future. The liturgical style of the parish’s formal worship is distinctively modern catholic. The parish of The Ascension is committed to engage collaboratively with clergy and parishes representing the spectrum of Anglicanism. Whilst the parish is no longer designated for extended episcopal oversight, the appointee will need to understand that among the worshippers at the Ascension there are some who in conscience cannot receive the sacramental ministry of female clergy, whilst most others do not hold a Traditionalist position. Everyone involved in the parish agrees that it is important that this matter should not be a cause of division within our congregation: rather, all must be willing to worship and work together, taking opportunities to further God’s mission in this community. It is essential that the appointee works closely with clergy and people in Middlesbrough and beyond who hold the whole range of views on the respective ministries of men and women, fully recognises the orders and ministry of all other clergy, and is fully committed to the Five Guiding Principles as expressed in the House of Bishops’ guidance.

  • JOINT PRESS RELEASE from Reform and Oxford Diocesan Evangelical Fellowship for Immediate Release
JOINT PRESS RELEASE from Reform and Oxford Diocesan Evangelical Fellowship For immediate release. Evangelicals call for the Church of England to uphold the gospel of Jesus Christ This week began with Katherine Jefferts Schori, the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church (TEC) of the USA preaching in Westminster Abbey, it will end, we are told with Canon Michael Smith of York Minster blessing the York Gay Pride March. In between we have seen the Bishop of Buckingham describe doctrine that he swore to teach and pass on as ‘lousy’. Nowhere in any of this has there been the clear message of the Gospel that despite our rejection of his ways we are all loved by God and can find forgiveness through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is not surprising then, that the majority of the world’s Anglicans now look to the Primates of Global Anglican Future Conference GAFCON for leadership – the only question is whether after weeks like this one, those in the Church of England who wish to proclaim this Gospel will be forced to follow the same path. “Christianity is based on revealed doctrine, enabling individuals to live rightly before a Holy God as followers of Jesus Christ. He tells us how to live in all areas of life, including in areas of sexual behaviour. No denomination is at liberty to invent its own doctrine or to sacrifice revealed doctrine on the altars of contemporary fashion. We cannot be authentically Christian whilst simultaneously rejecting the teaching of the one we claim to follow.” Rev Simon Austen – Rector of St Leonard’s Church, Exeter Diocese “York Minster’s leading the way in the Gay Pride march is symbolic of what the Church of England’s leadership is doing generally on this issue – leading people away from the clear teaching of the Bible and the Gospel.

I was looking forward to being there and was fascinated to compare what I know and experience of the Church of England decision making process with what happened in Rome.” He added: “I was intrigued to hear whether we can all understand ourselves as we related one to another and to each one of us, as members of the human family.” Paris attacks: Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby admits doubting God, warns against military action The Rt Revd Tim Thornton, Bishop of Truro meets Pope Francis watched by the Revd Tim McQuiban, the Methodist fraternal delegate and a Methodist Minister in Rome PHOTO CREDIT: All image rights and copyrights reserved to the Photographic Service of L’Osservatore Romano The Rt Revd Tim Thornton, Bishop of Truro, says it is clear there are “major differences in the room” at the Roman Catholic Synod on the Family in Rome where he recently represented the Anglican church. • The Ordination of Deacons
The Ordination of Deacons The Bishop of Manchester Manchester Cathedral The Bishop of Bolton Bolton Parish Church The Bishop of Middleton Oldham Parish Church Wednesday 23 September 2020 Welcome to Manchester Cathedral Ordinations during the pandemic Ordinations are times of great joy, not only for those being ordained, but for the whole Church giving thanks to God for the ministers he has called. That joy is undiminished this year, but sadly cannot be shared by a large congregation. Government regulations, rightly concerned to protect everyone’s health, limit attendance to 30. Those present at the service are therefore representative of many others who are today praying God’s blessing upon those made deacon, and who look forward with expectation to their new ministries. It is not only numbers which are limited in order for today’s service to be “covid secure”. For instance, there can be no singing. Those attending are also required to observe the following: • face masks are to be worn at all times (except when receiving Communion); • hand sanitiser is made available to be used on arrival and departure; • the congregation must remain seated in their allocated places; • all direct interaction is to be avoided with those not in your household or bubble, maintaining a two-metre distance; • Communion will be distributed in one kind (i.e. bread alone): hand sanitiser will be available, and must be used should there be accidental contact with the hand of the administer of Communion • the congregation should leave directly after the service, maintaining a two-metre distance and without interacting with others inside or outside, taking this order of service with them.

  • Porvoo Prayer Diary 2021
PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. The Calendar may be freely copied or emailed for wider circulation. The Prayer Diary is updated once a year.
