Until further notice access to worshippers* and visitors will only be by the North West door to satisfy security needs. On Sundays, signs and host staff will be in place to inform people that this is the way to enter the Minster. Please support our Minster Police, and our Hosts, as they work to ensure your safety. Please also ensure that you do not leave any bags unattended. *Access for our daily early morning services, including the 8 o’clock on Sundays, and Evensong in the evenings, is by the south door. Groups for children and young people during the 10.00 am service Welcome to all children sharing in our worship today. All children are welcome to join in with the prepared activities. The 5-11s group meets in the Zouche Chapel. Under 5s gather in the Consistory Court and should be accompanied by their parents or carers. To join either group, please follow the cross during the gradual hymn. If there is anything that we need to know about your child, please speak with any of the leaders. When the administration of communion begins please go to the Zouche Chapel to collect your child so that they can share in this part of the service. Please ask a steward if you do not know where to find the Zouche Chapel and someone will show you the way. Coffee after the 10.00 am Eucharist There will be no coffee after the 10.00 am Eucharist this week, but normal caffeine levels will return next week, after the 10.00 am Eucharist. Next week, those refreshments will be held in the north transept. Contactless giving At next Sunday’s 10.00 am Eucharist, as part of our move towards digital giving, you will be able to give by card using a GoodPlate. The GoodPlate enables people to give at a church service by coins, notes, card or phone. The plate has a card reader embedded within it. Frequently people do not carry cash, and so this collecting plate enables them to give contactlessly as part of the offertory. The plates will be available on entry and at the end of the service. This service is being used to showcase and demonstrate the technology, after the service we will be evaluating its performance with a view to future use. Unfortunately at the moment we are unable to gift aid this type of giving and so for UK taxpayers who are able, we still encourage you to use the gift aid envelope. If you have any feedback on the plate please contact Neil Sanderson at [email protected] RnR meets at the Lamb and Lion from 7.30 pm on the following dates: 02, 16 and 30 July, to wander through Luke’s Gospel over a glass of something. Residentiary Canon appointments. The search has begun to find a new Canon Precentor (to replace Canon Peter, who leaves in September) and a Canon Missioner. Interviews are being held in York between 8 and 12 July. Please hold in your prayers those who are responsible for making these appointments and all the candidates. Request for materials - Summer in Dean’s Park: Look Up! 27 July – 1 Sept. A range of free family activities will take place in Dean’s Park this summer holidays designed to make young explorers look up! Families will be able to enjoy a Heavens’ observation den, add a ribbon with a thought, prayer or wish to the ‘give and take tree’ or spend time spotting Mr and Mrs Minster, the cathedral’s resident Peregrine Falcons. Volunteers from the Minster community are busy knitting and felting small animals which will be left at locations around the park for families to discover and take home as a memento from their visit. If anyone would be interested in helping create the animals, which are up to 4 inches tall and range from ladybirds and bees to hippos and whales, please contact Ann Smith at [email protected]. The Learning Team is also looking for donations to support the activities including; leftover lengths of ribbon, leftover balls of double-knitting wool, old plastic plant pots (intact please, 10cm minimum diameter), large plastic milk and pop bottles (with tops if possible), kitchen roll tubes and newspapers. They would also appreciate donations of second-hand books – any topic and for any age range - as part of a free book exchange which will run throughout the summer. Donations can be left in boxes in the Minster staff room and at the receptions at Church House, St William’s College and the Old Palace. The activities are part of a range of family events at the Minster this summer including craft activities in the Chapter House (7, 14 & 21 Aug) and open air cinema with Luna Cinema (27-29 Aug). Name Change for Feminine Hygiene Kit Workshops We are withdrawing from under the umbrella Days for Girls International, and are changing our name to Yorkits. This is because we differ in our approach from DfG, and do not use unnecessary plastic in our kit-making, and we believe in the self-help principle. We will continue to make kits in workshops throughout the year, and to run the annual workshop in the Minster in March under our new name. In the pages that follow, you can see how the people of the parish of the Ascension describe their community and church, and the possibilities they see for moving forward in company with their new priest. The parish was led for over 20 years by Canon David Hodgson, who died in office in October 2016. He was a much loved larger-than-life character who is greatly missed by parishioners and by colleagues across the diocese. David laid a secure foundation of sacramental worship, prayer and study, and that legacy is something that we would all want to see honoured in the future. The liturgical style of the parish’s formal worship is distinctively modern catholic. The parish of The Ascension is committed to engage collaboratively with clergy and parishes representing the spectrum of Anglicanism. Whilst the parish is no longer designated for extended episcopal oversight, the appointee will need to understand that among the worshippers at the Ascension there are some who in conscience cannot receive the sacramental ministry of female clergy, whilst most others do not hold a Traditionalist position. Everyone involved in the parish agrees that it is important that this matter should not be a cause of division within our congregation: rather, all must be willing to worship and work together, taking opportunities to further God’s mission in this community. It is essential that the appointee works closely with clergy and people in Middlesbrough and beyond who hold the whole range of views on the respective ministries of men and women, fully recognises the orders and ministry of all other clergy, and is fully committed to the Five Guiding Principles as expressed in the House of Bishops’ guidance.

David combined his personal Traditionalist Catholic stance with a generous spirit of committed collaboration with clergy and parishes representing the spectrum of Anglicanism. The parish is designated to receive the extended episcopal care of the Bishop of Beverley, whilst maintaining close contact with the Archbishop and with the Bishop of Whitby. In the time since David’s death there has been much prayerful thinking in the parish, in conjunction with us. Among the worshippers at the Ascension there are some who in conscience cannot receive the sacramental ministry of female clergy, and others who do not hold a Traditionalist position. Everyone involved in these conversations agrees that it would be damaging to the life and mission of the parish if this matter were to become a cause of division, when there are opportunities to take God’s work in this community forward together.

    News from the Church of England between the Humber and the Tees May 2015 New Bishop of Hull and new Archdeacon of Cleveland On Wednesday 25th March, Archbishop Sentamu announced our new Bishop of Hull - the Revd Canon Alison White, and our new Archdeacon of Cleveland - the Revd Sam Rushton. The official announcements were made at Bishopthorpe Palace, where the choir of Archbishop of York's CofE Junior School, Bishopthorpe, sang at a service in the chapel. The Revd Canon Alison White then visited places in her new Archdeaconry - Archbishop Sentamu Academy in Hull, and All Saints Church in Kilham, near Driffield. Redcar and Middlesbrough have suffered some cruel blows in recent months and if all you knew about this area of the country was what you had seen on the news, then you might have a somewhat skewed view. What I have found since arriving in Cleveland is a warmth and resilience amongst the people of Teesside that I have not previously encountered and a part of the country which is almost heart-breakingly beautiful, from the majesty of the North York Moors to the windswept coast of the North Sea with its wide beaches and soaring cliffs.

    Saltburn Parochial Church Council Emmanuel Church Annual Report 2016 Emmanuel Saltburn Introduction – Rev’d Adam Reed (Vicar) Welcome to the Annual Report for 2016. I hope you find in it much that is encouraging, and gain a sense that the grace and gifts of God have been present in the life, worship and fellowship of Emmanuel Church during the year. REVD ADAM YOUNG: We officially said goodbye to Adam in July 2016 after four years as curate. We are thankful for his time and presence at Emmanuel, and for what he contributed to the life of the church. At the time of writing Adam is still searching for his next ministerial appointment, so we continue to pray for him. NEW MARSKE: Relationships between Emmanuel and St Thomas continue to develop, as we all become more familiar with each other. The habit of joining together for worship on the 5th Sunday of the month became established in 2016, and will hopefully continue into the future. It remains to be seen what the LYCIG process will achieve in helping both churches to grow together. OPEN CHURCH: It has been wonderful to see how many people at Emmanuel have joined the OPEN CHURCH welcome team. They have given up their time to make sure the church is kept open for visitors from Saltburn and further afield. These people have explored the church, some have remembered important events in their lives such as marriages or baptisms of their children, and others to have found a place they can just sit in peaceful contemplation! ALL ENGAGE 2016: In January we began All EngAge, a programme of themed services for all ages to worship together.

    The United Parish of Whitby with Ruswarp Thank you for your interest in the post of Rector of Whitby with Ruswarp. Whitby is a place with a wonderful Christian history, and at first sight it can seem quaint with its Abbey ruins, quaysides and alleyways. There are reminders of Whitby’s heritage everywhere. If you are called to be the next Rector of Whitby with Ruswarp, you will need to appreciate the best of what former generations have handed to us: but your task will not be to let the church live in the past, or trade on it. It will be your responsibility to help your parishioners see that the Good News of Jesus Christ can constantly re-shape their lives, and the love of Christ can reach them in times of joy and sorrow. You will need to be able to recognise the parish’s opportunities and challenges, devote time and energy into knowing its folk and being known by them, discern appropriate ways of ministering to visitors, be ready to take a key part in inspiring young people to reach their potential, and lead people creatively into the future. It will be important to take account of the changing economic and social context that Whitby shares with other northern coastal towns that are situated some distance from any big city. In order to do this, you must be a person for whom prayer and worship are central to your whole being: a priest who is excited by our shared aspiration in the Diocese of York to see growth in Christlikeness, commitment, partnership, influence and numbers.
