5 Recent History of Yaxley FC (The Cuckoos)

The ‘03/04, 04/05 and 05/06 seasons have undoubtedly been the clubs most successful ever with the 1st, Reserve, Youth, Ladies and Junior teams all bringing home trophies including at senior level, the prestigious Hinchingbrooke Cup and the UCL League Cup in May 06. The club has maintained FA Charter Club status and was granted planning permission to redevelop the site, improving the facilities (e.g. new clubhouse and additional playing areas) to FA community standard. The project was severely delayed in 2005 resulting in significant commercial loses due to an access dispute halting the club’s entire development plan. The dispute was finally settled and the project restarted in August ’06.

Season 2008-09 saw the move to more temporary accommodation. The last 3 seasons have been some of the toughest in the clubs history as against the pundit’s opinions; Gary Clipston pulled survival from the jaws of relegation.

The 2012-13 season saw a total rebuild of the 1st team and players under the management of former Cuckoos player and Reserve Team manager Brett Whaley (assisted by Chris Lenton) and the reinstatement of the clubs Reserve Team acting as a bridge between our flourishing U18’s and 1st Team. The 1st team finished mid-table and were joint winners (along with Royston Town) of The Hinchingbrooke Cup, the reserve team were runners up in the league and the league cup and the U18’s were league champions and league cup winners (comprehensively beating AFC Rushden & Diamonds). All in all, not a bad season.

2013-14 saw the dismantling of the reserve side due to a lack of bodies to manage the team to an acceptable level and a brand new U18’s team coming up from U16’s football – a very tough season ahead. The 1st team finished 6th in the league table—a highly commendable result but the FA and League Cup competitions were massively disappointing although we probably created a couple of new records in the process.

2014-15 saw the Cuckoos enjoy a very good season with an excellent FA Vase run and a 4th position in the league but one of the worst disciplinary records in the club’s history compounded by an embarrassing county cup final display to round off a poor run-in to the end. The surprise of the season was the “shock” departure of Brett Whaley to Wisbech Town having only days before presented his plan and budget for the 2015-16 to the club’s committee which was approved.

2015-16 A new brush and a new era with new manager Ian Benjamin, an ex-professional with massive experience in semi-pro and non-league and a track record of promotion at Step 4 and 5. The biggest change for the club was the new 3G pitch that the club and the community have already benefited from enormously. The club would like to place on public record its deep and sincere appreciation to all those silent partners who have made our dream for growth and sustainability a reality. Ian Benjamin resigned at the beginning of April and the position was filled by the return from Wisbech Town of Brett Whaley.

2016-17 Brett Whaley showed his intent to take the Cuckoos to a higher level of football by strengthening the squad with some impressive experience whilst retaining the vast majority of last season’s players. Last season was a disappointing one for the whole club but that was quickly forgotten. Brett brought back players and a great coaching team. In addition to an impressive 3rd place in the league we also won the UCL KO Cup beating Wisbech Town in a fiercely contested battle.

2017-18 Our new Chairman (Malcolm Clements) officially set the clubs target for promotion and building on the success of last season, started what we all hoped was the next forward step for the Cuckoos. Our local attendances began to swell and also got behind our reformed Reserves. Assistant manager Andy Furnell took over the 1st Team management as Brett Whaley once again left the club, leading the club again to the league cup final (runners up), Hinchingbrooke Cup Final (Winners) AND more importantly to the league title and PROMOTION to the Evo-Stik SOUTHERN LEAGUE.

2018-19 On the back of a tremendous season, the Cuckoos are looking to sustain their rise to step 4, retaining the entire squad from last year plus bolstering in a couple of areas. The Reserve team (led by Lloyd Burton) is looking to improve on a successful last season having finished a solid 6th in the league and winning the UCL Reserve KO cup.

By David Richardson

The court ruling that has seen Ossett United ordered to pay £135,000 will have given Non-League clubs plenty of food for thought about how they approach the issue of player-to-player insurance.

The BetVictor Northern North West club have been sued by Rees Welsh, who broke his ankle in a tackle while playing for Radcliffe Borough against Ossett Town in April 2015.

Just over £19,000 in damages were awarded to the full-back, making his debut, with the club also having to pay out £115,000 in costs and legal fees.

Ossett’s insurance, which included a public liability policy offered by the and the minimum requirement as set out by the FA, did not cover player-to-player incidents and only covered their own legal fees should they lose a claim.

The club is now considering selling their ground in order to pay off the hefty bill.

NPL chairman Mark Harris told The NLP: “We make it clear within all the communications – and it’s in the third line of the first paragraph of the communication that goes out to clubs – that it does not include player-to-player cover.

“We will continue to recommend the policy we have for public liability and personal accident. If anything this is to remind clubs it doesn’t include player-to-player.”

Whether the ruling will spark a wave of cases remains to be seen. It remains true that these incidents are very hard to prove, but there is no doubting it will leave much of the Non-League game very uncomfortable.

As it stands, the FA don’t have player-to-player insurance as mandatory. Clubs are – or at least should be – aware of what they are covered for and that there is a potential risk of what has happened to Ossett happening to them.

Harris believes clubs don’t have an appetite for that level of cover to be mandatory and the FA say their rules are reflecting what the game wants.

It is only right the authorities reflects on this case, takes the views of clubs and experts and then decides the best course of action.

Will this also put additional pressure on referees? As the sole independent party in these types of cases, a lot will be put on their reports and evidence. It is quite the position to be in.

We must also not forget about Welsh. It can’t have been an easy route to go down and, however you feel about the ruling, he has suffered a major injury that will have affected not only his footballing career, but also his day-to-day life.

The impact of any injury to any player can’t be underestimated.

RESERVE SQUAD 2019/20

24 Match Report: Harborough Town Reserves 2-4 Yaxley Reserves

We started well and soon created our 1st chance with a cross ball to far post 2 yards out, we put wide. I thought we looked good going forward link play was good. 1st goal soon came, a low cross put in by CP 1-0 . Harborough played with two very quick wide attackers and it soon became clear Harborough’s game plan: into midfield and a long ball out wide getting behind our left and right backs. We at times struggled with it but soon adapted. The 2nd soon came once again CP finding the bottom corner. Our confidence was up and then came the 3rd!! Fantastic quick into play between 3 lads only for JW to hit a right foot volley top corner 3- 0 (by the way he’s left footed) . Harborough had moments and for sure our Gk JB was in top form. HT 3-0

2nd half , the plan was to kill the 1st 15 minutes hoping they might drop their heads. Harborough kept in the game and soon made it 3-1. Game on . To be fair we had chances to go further in front but it wasn’t to be. I thought we battled every ball well and if not for a mistake by us their 2nd shouldn’t have come but it did. 3-2 tough one.

With the game in the balance we had to come together. Within 5 minutes we went 4-2 up, a mistake by there defender only for us to score. Breathing space!! Soon after we should have made it 5 with a one on one but their Gk saved. Full time 2-4

Tony has a very good side and as we all say, we will all beat each other. For us we take it week by week and see where we end up in the league. More tough games ahead!!!

25 Bedworth United: History

The first Bedworth Town football club was formed in 1895 when several matches were played against other local teams. They became founder members of the Nuneaton and District League in 1898, but by 1900 the club had disbanded.

Finishing runners up in the Second Division of the Coventry and North Warwickshire League in the 1904-05 season, the ECS changed their name to Bedworth Town on winning promotion and stayed in existence until the early 1920s. During that time, the town fielded a fine player in Jack 'Sandy' Sheldon who later played for Manchester United, Liverpool and Luton Town.

A third club came on the scene in 1925, when Collycroft United, formed in 1916, became the third team to name themselves Bedworth Town.

This was the most successful of the pre-war clubs, they were members of the Coventry and North Warwickshire League and spent one season in 1936-37 in the Central Amateur League. The last club to become Bedworth Town was formed in 1947, and as a semi-professional club, secured membership of the Combination and soon hit the headlines. They won the championship in successive seasons - 1948-49 and 1949-50 seasons - and in the 1949-50 season were also defeated in the final of the Birmingham Senior Cup.

For season 1954-55, Bedworth joined the Birmingham League and they qualified for the Northern Section for the league’s inaugural First Division. The Birmingham League was re-named the West Midlands League in 1962, but lack of success and problems off the field saw Bedworth Town change their name to Bedworth United in 1968.

In 1972 they obtained membership for the Southern League Division One North. In their first season they finished bottom, but this was only to be a setback as they made rapid strides into the Premier Division when the league was re-formed in 1982.

In the Premier Division, they finished 5th in 1982-83 season, and were stable in this league until a poor run saw them relegated at the end of the 1988-89 season. On February 23rd 1982, the non-league world was staggered when a crowd of 5,172 - then a record for the Southern League in its new form - turned up at their Oval ground to watch them beat Nuneaton Borough 1-0 to go top of the league.

After becoming Bedworth United, they won the Birmingham Senior Cup on three occasions in the 1980s and were beaten finalists to West Bromwich Albion in the 1987-88 season. Bedworth United were relegated to the Southern League Midland Division in 1988-89 season until the appointment of St Lucia-born Brendan Phillips as manager in 1990 launched a revival in the clubʼs fortunes.

From 1990 to 1997, the Greenbacks pushed for promotion back to the Southern League’s top flight and enjoyed a top six finish in four of the next five seasons. Phillips was tempted to move to Stafford Rangers during the 1992-93 season but progress was continued under the helm of former Notts County midfielder Dean Thomas. Unfortunately, achieving the heady heights of a third place finish in the 1995-96 season, the club overstretched itself financially - and they faced possible closure until a group of die-hards acted to keep the club alive. After that, the Greenbacks occupied a bottom half finish for 14 seasons until the appointment In May, 2011, of a bright, forward-thinking management team led by Steve Farmer, assistant Adam Cooper, and the experienced Ian Roper on the field. In his first season, Farmer - at 31 the youngest manager in the club’s history - led them to their first promotion in their 65-year semi-professional history.

After finishing in a highly-creditable third place, they won promotion after beating Uxbridge 2-1 in a semi-final play-off, and defeating Beaconsfield SYCOB 3-1 in the final. Sadly, the fledgling manager showed his inexperience by changing his promotion-winning team from the start and it culminated in the club lasting just one season back in the Southern League Premier Division as they finished in 21st place and went down on goal difference

2013-14 The Greenbacks played in the Evo Stick Northern League Division One South. Andrew Fuller took over as Manager, however he resigned after a few weeks and was replaced by Nick Hawkins who unfortunately was unable to improve the results. He was then replaced by our current Manager, Stuart Storer along with Andy Penny as his assistant. Both came from Hinckley United. After a difficult start they produced a settled squad and staved off relegation at the end of the season.

2014-15 The Greenbacks returned to the . Stuart Storer remained as manager and in his first full season in charge the club once again won promotion after a 2-0 win over Barton Rovers in the play-off final. This was after finishing 4th after the league programme had been finished. This was the clubs first season on its new artificial grass pitch.

2015-16 The club played once again in the Southern Football League Premier Division. The season started slowly and a number of changes to playing staff made up until Christmas. The club pushed to avoid relegation but ultimately were unsuccessful, although all agree this was due to the start of the season and not the group of players at the club at the end. We have now returned to the Northern Premier League Division 1 South

The 2016-17 season saw the club play once again in the Northern Premier League Division 1 South. A season that saw a number of injury problems and changes in playing staff saw a mid-table finish. The club did have a successful run in the FA Cup, eventually losing out to National League side Curzon Ashton.

2017/2018 Saw the team struggle in the league early on with injuries and Stuart Storer was unable to field the same team for 2 games in a row. Come Christmas though with the team becoming more settled results started to come and the Greenbacks push saw them finish 4th in the league and make the playoffs where they met Chasetown in the semi final running out 2-1 winners to book a place against Stamford in the final. Bedworth eventually won 2-1 after extra time after conceding 7 minutes into injury time. With the restructuring of the Leagues Bedworth were now promoted into the Evo Stik Southern premier league central. Unfortunately this foray into step 3 of the Non League ladder was short lived and the team were relegated back to step 4 at the end of the 2018/19 season.

26 Bedworth United: Player Profiles

ADAM HARRISON: Adam is a 20 year old goal keeper; he started his football career at Leicester City, where after serving an apprenticeship was released. He then joined BUFC and had a very successful season with the under 21 team, also making several appearances for the first team too, where he performed very well.

DAN CRANE: Dan returned to the club after taking a brief foray into managing being the Assistant at Gresley but has decided that its not time to hang up the gloves yet. Dans footballing CV includes West Brom as a youngster and a wealth of other non league clubs. Dan is great at controlling his back line and his voice can be heard all over the park his experience is great to have around the club.

LUKE ROWE: Luke is a local lad and he has grown in stature under the guidance of the coaching team. The 26 year old left sided player was one of the managers‘ first signings from Hinckley 5 years ago, where he played under our manager there. He has played in New Zealand for Wellington making several appearances for the New Zealand national youth team. He always seem to feature in the end of year award ceremonies.

ELLIOT PARROTT: Elliot is becoming quite an experienced player despite his young age. The combative midfielder was a youngster at Coventry City and played for Nuneaton Town youth team before joining Bedworth. He will have made approximately 100 appearances for the club and can play in a number of positions with relative ease. He swept up all the awards at last season’s promotion presentation evening.

TOM SHARPE: Tom is a calm assured defender; the 30 year old has had good football league experience earlier in his career at Bury before spending time with Kidderminister Harriers and Worcester City making an abundance of appearances in the conference leagues. His stop start season last year still led to him showing his quality when we needed it and we feel his experience will be valuable in this seasons campaign.

RICARDO DUDLEY: Ricardo joined Bedworth at the beginning of the 2017/18 promotion season from Boldmere St Michael. This strong defender started off his time at Bedworth a tad shaky but once he settled his development for this 19 year old has been quite rapid with some strong performances during the season and is fast becoming a fan favourite he has no problems with putting his body on the line for the team as his recent head wound is testament to.

ALEX TROKE: Alex started out at Walsall before accepting a scholarship at Notts County Paul Ince offered him a contract but unfortunately cost saving measures led to all first year professionals being released. Alex then moved on to Eastwood Town for 2 seasons then to Grantham and 2 very successful years at Carlton, then signed for Coalville where he was the clubs top scorer. Joined Bedworth at the start of the 2017-18 season and was instrumental in the promotion winning season.

REECE BLACKMORE: Reece is now in his 3rd season with Bedworth, Reece as a youngster up until U16 was playing at Derby county where he then moved on to play youth football at Kettering Town. Bedworth signed him from Coventry Sphinx and since then he has been a regular in the team becoming a fan favourite because of his combative style of play.

LYNUS KING: Lynus joined us from Oadby Town as a junior he had a spell with Stoke before moving to Holland and becoming part of both Ajax and Feyonoords youth systems. On returning to the Uk he has had spells at Leicester Nirvana, Nuneaton,Stamford and Gresley. Lynus preferred position is as either a Right Back or a holding midfielder

ASHANTI PRYCE: Ashanti at only 20 years old is a quick direct technical striker with quick feet and an eye for goal, having Bromsgrove Sporting, Solihull Moors, Mansfield Town and Birmingham City on his footballing CV Ashanti is definitely one to watch this season.

CAL TEMPLETON: Cal has represented Northern Ireland at both U17 and U19 level an is a product of Leicester City Academy having spent 9 years there. A tough tackling centre half with a no nonsense attitude to the game Cal will no doubt be one to watch this season.

MITCH PIGGON: Mitch has already wrote his name in the Greenbacks history books having scored here in his previous seasons with us in the Playoff final against Beaconsfield. Mitch is a good old fashioned centre forward who knows where the goal is and has no problem putting the ball in the net with either foot.

RICHARD BLYTHE: Richard is a centre midfielder who is happy to mix it but is equally good with the ball at his feet, Richard is another player who has returned to the club after a season at Rugby. He was club captain in the promotion winning season and hopes that he can relieve that glory again this season.

KHAELLEM BAILEY-NICHOLS: Khaellem was unlucky with injuries in his last season with Bedworth but still managed a return of 10 goals in 17 appearances a lot of which was from the bench. Khaellem is a strong attacking player with lots of pace who defenders will dread coming up against.

JOSH STEELE: Josh is a new signing for this season and has impressed down the left side in pre-season both defensively and going forward and will no doubt bring a lot of energy to the squad. Previous clubs include Nuneaton and last season at Rugby

BLAIZE PUNTER: Blaize is an Antigua and Barbados international he is a strong reliable centre half who has joined us from Rushden and Diamonds. He started his footballing career at Mansfield then moved on to Quorn and Rugby before settling at Rushden and Diamonds where he made over 50 appearances before joining the Greenbacks early this season.

DAN PRESTON: Dan started his career at Birmingham and has played at numerous non league clubs both at this level and higher. He can list Hereford, Telford, Tamworth and Stratford amongst others on his footballing CV . Dan is a no nonsense defender who doesn’t mind putting his head in where it hurts and has proved that since joining us from Nuneaton.
