  • Do You Remember… Mario Andretti's Superb Monza Comeback
LATEST / FEATURE Do you remember… Mario Andretti’s superb Monza comeback ITALY Formula1.com 31 Aug 2015 There has been a plethora of memorable stand-in performances in F1 racing’s rich history, but for many Mario Andretti’s emotional cameo for Ferrari at the 1982 Italian Grand Prix remains the finest of them all… 0:00 / 0:00 © LAT Photographic “Did I accept as a favour to Mr Ferrari? Well, sure, up to a point. But mainly I did it as a favour to me! Jesus, what kind of guy can say no to Ferrari at Monza?" Mario Andretti had been out of F1 proper for the best part of a year, racing IndyCars in his homeland, when he received the call from the Old Man. Sure, he had commitments stateside, and no, his last Grand Prix outing - a one-off appearance for Williams at Long Beach earlier in the 1982 season - had not gone at all smoothly, but how could he turn down the chance to race for Ferrari at Monza, the very same circuit where, as a 14- year-old, he’d screamed himself hoarse supporting Prancing Horse star Alberto Ascari? The answer was simple: he couldn’t. Andretti’s Monza invitation had come amid desperate times for the Scuderia, who’d lost talismanic star Gilles Villeneuve to a fatal crash at Zolder in May and then seen his championship-leading team mate Didier Pironi suffer what looked to be career-ending injuries in another horrific shunt at Hockenheim barely three months later. To make matters worse, Patrick Tambay, the man with the unenviable task of filling Villeneuve’s vaunted number 27 cockpit, had been forced to pull out of the most recent round at Dijon because of severe back pain.

  • Alpine 24 Hours of Le Mans Parade: Passion for Racing
PRESS RELEASE 21/08/2021 ALPINE 24 HOURS OF LE MANS PARADE: PASSION FOR RACING • Alpine celebrated its passion for motorsport with a unique and prestigious curtain-raising parade at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. • Alpine made history as the first brand to put in a lap of the Circuit de la Sarthe with a Formula 1 car in the colours of the A521, driven by Fernando Alonso. • United under the Alpine banner, Alpine F1 Team drivers Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon joined several of the brand's racing aces at the wheel of the A470, A110 GT4, A110 Rally and A110S in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Before the start of the biggest endurance race in the world, the fans in the grandstands and around the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit had the chance to see, hear and feel all the motorsport passion created by Alpine. This afternoon, five Alpine A110S road cars, including two driven by Nicolas Longuet (Alpine eSports Team) and Lilou Wadoux (Alpine Elf Europa Cup), exited the pit lane. A few moments later, the A110 Rally entrusted to the French two- wheel-drive Champion and the FIA R-GT class winner on the 2021 Monte-Carlo Rally Manu Guigou joined them. In his first public appearance since winning the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, Frenchman Esteban Ocon followed in an A110 GT4, a car that won the 2018 GT4 International Cup before enjoying more success across Europe. Pierre Thiriet, who with Alpine Elf Matmut Endurance Team drivers André Negrão and Nicolas Lapierre, twice won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMP2 category, then took to the track in the A470 LMP2 prototype that won its class title in the 2018-2019 FIA World Endurance Championship season.

  • Series Omnibus History of F1 – 1900S to 1940S
History of F1 – Series Omnibus This is Sidepodcast’s mini series – History of F1. The following seven shows were originally released over seven consecutive days, covering the history of the sport from the 1900s all the way up to the present day. This omnibus now gathers all the shows up together in one, for easy listening. Enjoy. History of F1 – 1900s to 1940s Welcome to Sidepodcast’s History of F1. This series will take us back to the beginning of the 20th century, when Formula 1 was all about honour, it was a gentleman’s sport, and it mostly involved getting to the end of the road without falling in a pothole. We’ll travel through time (not literally, of course), to see how Formula 1 became the corporate and money‐orientated sport that it is today. The F1 championship, and all the official records, date back to the 1950s, but the essence of F1 can be traced all the way back to the early 1900s. Back then it involved heavy cars. Drivers would be accompanied by a mechanic because reliability was such a problem, and the track was just a simple road in France. I say simple, but actually, the races were long and tough. The first proper motor race was called the Paris‐Bordeaux because… well, it went from Paris to Bordeaux. It was 1200km, and the winner achieved it in 48 hours. Average speeds were a rocketing 29.9 miles per hour. 1901 saw the first race with Grand Prix in the title, the French Grand Prix, taking place at Le Mans.

  • Who Is the Best Formula 1 Driver? an Economic Approach to Evaluating Talent
ECONOMIC ANALYSIS & POLICY, VOL. 39 NO. 3, DECEMBER 2009 Who Is The Best Formula 1 Driver? An Economic Approach to Evaluating Talent Reiner Eichenberger* and David Stadelmann Department of Economics, University Freiburg, CH-1700 Fribourg, Switzerland (Email: [email protected]) Abstract: Who is the best formula 1 driver? Until today it was impossible to answer this question because the observable performance of a driver depends both on his talent and the quality of his cars. In this paper, we for the first time separate driver talent from car quality by econometrically analyzing data covering 57 years of Formula 1 racing. Our estimates also control for the number of drivers finishing, technical breakdowns and many other variables that influence race results. While Michael Schumacher is often believed to be the best driver, he is overtaken by Juan Manuel Fangio and Jim Clark. I. INTRODUCTION Who is currently the best Formula 1 driver? Who was the best Formula 1 driver in history? And what about the Australian drivers? Many people are more interested in such questions than in the very important research puzzles commonly dealt with in economic journals. Fortunately, these questions can be answered thanks to the tools used by economists. A Formula 1 driver is fast, if he is talented and has a good car. Moreover, his racing success depends on a large number of additional factors. Individual success is determined to a large extent by factors such as the competitors’ talents and the quality of their cars, the number of competitors in a race, weather conditions during the race, and pure racing luck.

MARIO ANDRETTI Not many have driven a race car better than Mario Andretti. He could make a bad car competitive and a competitive car victorious. He won the Indianapolis 500, the Daytona 500, the Formula One World Championship and the Pikes Peak Hillclimb. He won the Indy Car National Championship four times and was a three-time winner at Sebring. He won races in sports cars, sprint cars and stock cars – on ovals, road courses, drag strips, on dirt and on pavement. He won at virtually every level of motorsports since he arrived in America from his native Italy at age 15. He is a racing icon, considered by many to be the greatest race car driver in the history of the sport. Assessing his legacy is easy…. He drove the careers of three men. He drove with a passion and joy that few have equaled – and he won. Mario Andretti took the checkered flag 111 times during his career – a career that stretched five decades. And he was competitive all of those years: He was named Driver of the Year in three different decades (the 60s, 70s, 80s), Driver of the Quarter Century (in the 90s) and the Associated Press named him Driver of the Century in January, 2000. The admiration for Andretti has been for his achievements on the race track. He is in the very elite, top-superstar category of his game. Yet, if you look at his whole life, he has seen the world that most people will never see. And the journey he has made is what made him a very rich man.
