Selling Points Russell Maliphant • Russell Maliphant is a multi award-winning choreographer with international recognition. • His works, including Afterlight, Eonnagata and PUSH, have toured around the world. • He trained at The Royal Ballet School and graduated into Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet before leaving to pursue an independent career. • His collaborations with Michael Hulls have bought him much critical acclaim as the pair use light and Maliphant’s trademark style of beautifully fluid movement to sculpt dancers’ bodies. “Dancing bodies rarely look more beautiful than in the work of Russell Maliphant” The Guardian • Russell has worked extensively with the BalletBoyz and choreographed Fallen for The Talent, the new generation of male dancers who make up the company. • Russell Maliphant is a Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist. • Russell will be working with English National Ballet on a new programme of work commissioned to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. Guardian article here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/stage/2013/jun/10/akram-khan-russell- maliphant-enb Michael Hulls • Michael Hulls is a multi award-winning lighting designer who was the first non dancer/choreographer to become a Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist. • In 2012 he was nominated for a TMA award for outstanding achievement in dance. • In 2010 he was entered into the Oxford Dictionary of Dance Afterlight (Part One) • Afterlight (Part One) was first performed as part of In the Spirit of Diaghilev at Sadler’s Wells, commissioned to celebrate the anniversary of the Ballets Russes. • It was inspired by Nijinsky’s drawings and contains beautiful animated projections. • It won a Critic’s Circle National Dance award for best modern choreography in 2010, as well as an Olivier award nomination. Two • First created on Dana Fouras it later gained further international recognition by world famous dancer Sylvie Guillem who made it her own as part of PUSH. Now danced by Carys Staton, it is as close to the original as it has ever been. About the dancers • Dickson Mbi is famed for his exceptional popping style. He has won multiple awards including the UK B-boy championships in 2008, 2009 and 2012. • Dickson performed in Russell Maliphant’s The Rodin Project and has also appeared in a TV ad for Lucozade which was choreographed by Russell. • Thomasin Gülgeç and Carys Staton also appeared in The Rodin Project. • Thomasin Gülgeç danced with Rambert from 2003 - 2011. • Adam Kirkham is a member of BalletBoyz and recently appeared in a Lexus ad alongside Carys Staton, choreographed by Russell Maliphant. Jan Urbanowski • Jan Urbanowski is an animation artist who has worked with several big names in the world of music including Lady GaGa, George Michael, Pet Shop Boys and Kasabian. Stevie Stewart • Stevie Stewart has created costumes for many international music tours including several for Kylie Minogue, Leona Lewis, Westlife and Britney Spears. • She was a designer for influential 80s fashion label BodyMap http://www.dazeddigital.com/fashion/article/6120/1/fashion-archive-bodymap Armand Amar • French-Morrocan Armand Amar has scored many films and is touring his first oratorio this year. Mukul • Mukul is a cutting edge composer working out of the artist-run ambientspace studio in London. • His previous projects have included an audio-visual performance based on the preparation of food, and a (playable) harp with razor wire strings. • He has worked extensively in dance including with Shobana Jeyasingh and BalletBoyz. This is his fourth collaboration with Russell Maliphant. 4. Box office briefing notes About Still Current • Still Current is a mixed bill which includes two famous pieces of dance by Russell Maliphant: Afterlight (Part One) and Two. • The evening will also feature three new works: two duets and a trio. • A video clip is available here: About Russell Maliphant • Russell Maliphant is an internationally acclaimed contemporary dance choreographer. • He trained with the Royal Ballet and was accepted in to the Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet (now Birmingham Royal Ballet) before leaving to pursue an independent career. • He is well known for his choreography for the ballet superstar Sylvie Guillem and the BalletBoyz. Running Time Approx 1hr and 15 mins plus one 20 minute interval (subject to change) Age Suitability Age guidance is 8+. We are not expecting there to be any adult content, violence or nudity. Special Effects There are strobe lighting effects used in the production. Haze effects are not used in this production. Brochure copy Russell Maliphant Still Current Still Current is an evening of work by the internationally acclaimed Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Russell Maliphant; it features newly created duets and trios danced by his remarkable company and by Maliphant himself. Joining Maliphant on stage are Carys Staton, whose energetic elegance and dedication are showcased in the new creations, and Dickson Mbi, famed for his strength and incredible popping style. The evening also features Thomasin Gülgeç, whose fluid agility and grace are demonstrated in new works, and in the award-winning solo Afterlight (Part One), included as part of the programme. There is a diverse physical language across the pieces, integrating qualities and vocabulary from contemporary dance, ballet and martial arts. The lighting and projection designs for the evening are by Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Michael Hulls. Musically, the evening includes an eclectic mix of sound with compositions from Eric Satie, long time collaborator Andy Cowton and a newly commissioned score by the sublime Armand Amar, well known for his film scores. Costume designs are by Stevie Stewart with animation created by Jan Urbanowski.
