LaCONES-CCMB releases guidelines for COVID-19 testing in zoo animals Hyderabad, 21st June, 2021: COVID-19 has been reported in zoo animals in India in the last month. The Laboratory for the Conservation of Endangered Species (LaCONES) of CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad is one of the four designated centres for testing animal samples for possible coronavirus infection. With support from Central Zoo Authority and Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Climate Change, it has released guidelines for zoo frontline on COVID-19 investigation in captive animals. “The guidelines provide detailed protocols that include pictorials and frequently asked questions for an easier understanding of those collecting samples for COVID testing in wildlife”, said Dr. Vinay K Nandicoori, Director, CSIR-CCMB. LaCONES started testing animal samples for possible SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection in August 2020. The scientists found the first positive samples from Asiatic lions in Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad in April 2021. In this time, LaCONES team has tried testing for coronavirus using different kinds of – nasal, oropharyngeal, rectal and fecal samples from the animals. LaCONES regularly tests wildlife samples using DNA-based molecular biology tools to solve wildlife cases. These tests are very similar to the ones being used for coronavirus testing. “We hope that our recommendations help the zoo staff in collecting and packing the samples appropriately before they send out to animal testing centres will smoothen the process for the zoos as well as testing centres. Given how difficult it is to get samples from animals, it is all the more important that we make most of the samples we get”, said Dr. Karthikeyan Vasudevan, Scientist-in- charge, LaCONES, CSIR-CCMB. Hyderabad City: History & Tourism Hyderabad is the capital city of the state of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh of South India. The city was founded on the River Musi by Muham- mad Quli Qutab Shah in 1591. The city is located on the Deccan Plateau and it is the ﬁfth largest city of India. This cosmopolitan city is richly endowed with a variety of cultures. The city presents an attractive amal- gam of old world charm together with new world of hi-technology. Hyderabad city has a history of nearly four hundred years. All its began with the establishment of the Qutub Shahi dynasty. Quli Qutub Golconda Fort Shah seized the reins of power from the Bahamani Kingdom in 1512 and established the fortress city of Golconda. The history of Golconda goes back to the Kakatiya Dynasty in 11th century when they built a mud fortress on a hill called Golconda. Inadequacy of water, and fre- quent epidemics of plague and cholera persuaded Mohammed, the ﬁfth Quli Qutub Shahi ruler to ven- ture outward to establish the new city with the Charminar at its cen- ter and with four great roads fan- ning out in the four cardinal direc- tions. The capital of the city was Bhagyanagar, which named after a royal beloved Bhagyamati. As she Charminar became the wife of Quli Qutub Shah, the sultan bestowed the title of Hy- 1 der Mahal on Bhagmati and thus was born Hyderabad. The Qutub Shahi rulers were great builders and patrons of learn- ing. Mohamed Quli Qutub Shah built the mosque, whose construc- tion began in 1614 and Aurangazeb completed it in 1687.

Rotary Friendship Exchange RI DIST 3150 AN INTRODUCTION An Introduction Rotarians of District 3150 have been great travellers over the years ; and also enjoy looking after Rotarians visiting us from other countries. RFE visits have been made with Rotary District - in Poznan, Poland. - in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Typically, a party of around 3-5 Rotarians and partners visits the host Dist rict where they may be hosted by groups of Rotarian families for 3-4 days at a time for a period of around 1-2 weeks. Time is spent in sightseeing, perhaps visits to local industries, and some Rotary meetings and from our experience, lots of parties! The whole purpose of RFE is to foster international friendships and understanding. In some cases, the RFE visit leads to collaboration between Districts on shared projects, perhaps involving WCS or Matching Grants. My home club was involved with a similar project in 2007. Central Zoo Authority and Indian Zoos: A Current Overview Sally Walker Central Zoo Authority (CZA) (estab. Feb. 1992) is now a dozen years old. The Authority exists at the pleasure of the Central Government, which has reconstituted it four times and will undoubtedly do so again in the immediate future. CZA was set up to tackle many problems, among the most important, the rampant proliferation of zoos without adequate plan or principles, or even financial backing. Many of the then ~ 350 zoos had been set up for political reasons, to satisfy the whims of a Minister or other official and left to deteriorate after the founding function. It is very easy to open a zoo compared to closing one but this task -- closing zoos that could not meet a minimum standard -- was given to the fledgling Authority This was, part of a process, also led by CZA, to provide oversight for zoo management and, after evaluation, to give technical and monetary support and time, so that the zoos could improve. In this process, which is well established today, if the zoos improve sufficiently, they are granted recognition for three years. If they do not improve within a specified time frame they are deemed "derecognised" and must be closed by their state. Only recognised zoo can operate legally in the country. As of this year there are 164 recognised zoos in the country and 90 recently derecognised zoos. Since a few years after the inception of CZA, many other zoos have been derecognised. This article is an update and overview of some of the last year's activities of Central Zoo Authority.

It was a constituent College of erstwhile Osmania University with a primary objective to impart and promote Quality Veterinary Education in princely state of Hyderabad. In 1954, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi permitted this College to train students from other states to award BVSc & AH degree. During this period quite a number of teachers were deputed for training at Kansas State University (USA) during 1957 under USAID program. The college was transferred to the fold of Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University (APAU) on 10 July, 1964 and later in 1968 it was shifted to Rajendranagar. APAU was later christened as Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU) in 1996. Subsequently with the establishment of separate Veterinary University i.e., Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University (SVVU) at Tirupati in 2005, the College was brought under its control. Since formation of Telangana State, the Govt. of Telangana established a Veterinary University in November, 2014 naming it after former Prime Minister of India Honorable, Sri. Late P.V.
