    https://www.redlandscommunitynews.com/news/public_safety/county-establishes-task-force-on-covid-19- infections-at-nursing-homes/article_824d5044-7873-11ea-a1d4-c37d6e4dbb4c.html BREAKING County establishes task force on COVID-19 infections at nursing homes Alejandro Cano, reporter, Redlands Community News Apr 6, 2020 In response to the recent outbreaks at a Yucaipa and Colton nursing facilities, the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health established on Monday, April 6, a multiagency Nursing Facilities Task Force to avoid the spread of COVID-19 among the elderly population. Acting County Health Ofcer Erin Gusfatson also ordered nursing facilities to take multiple steps to protect the elderly population and health-compromised clients. The order requires nursing home staff to wear protective gear and to monitor staff members’ temperatures to prevent the spread. The order also forbids employees from entering facilities if they have symptoms of any contagious disease, Gustafson said. “Without appropriate precautions and procedures, nursing homes can create a tragically ideal environment for the spread of viruses among those who are most susceptible to symptoms and complications,” Gustafson said. According to the Department of Public Health, San Bernardino County has 171 state-licensed nursing facilities caring for at least 6,600 of the county’s most at-risk residents. On Saturday, April 4, California Gov. Gavin Newsom identied San Bernardino County as one of four nursing home “hotspots” in the state. “The county is dedicating every resource we can to ghting the spread of COVID-19,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Curt Hagman. “This task force will focus on supporting our senior living facilities in their efforts to preserve the safety of their residents.” The idea to create the task force began after the outbreak at Cedar Mountain Post-Acute Rehabilitation in Yucaipa where 75 residents and staff tested positive for COVID-19, a disease that has also killed ve residents at the same facility.

    ‘On Being’ host Krista Tippett to speak Nov. 7 on mystery in our busy world - 1 Tippett has since renamed her weekly show to “On ‘On Being’ host Krista Being.” It airs weekly on Utah Public Radio (FM 91.5 or streaming at UPR.org) at 6 p.m. Sundays. Outlined are the election results for the Offices of Mayor, City Attorney, City Controller, and odd-numbered City Council Districts. Also included are results for the special election in City Council District 6, Ballot Measures, Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education, and Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees. CITY OF LOS ANGELES Mayor City Councilmember Eric Garcetti defeated City Controller Wendy Greuel 53.92 percent to 46.07 percent. Garcetti is the first elected Jewish Mayor and is the outgoing three-term Councilmember of the Thirteenth District of Los Angeles. A fourth- generation Angeleno, Garcetti won a hotly-contested election to the Los Angeles City Council in 2001, becoming one of the youngest city councilmembers in the city’s history. He was unanimously elected as Council President in 2005 and unanimously re-elected in 2007 and 2009. During his term in office, Garcetti emerged as an effective local problem-solver and as a strong advocate on citywide and national issues. He led the effort to fund the nation’s largest Affordable Housing Trust Fund, oversaw the economic and cultural revitalization of Hollywood, wrote and championed Proposition O to clean up our local water, won passage of a plan that eliminated the city’s business tax for 60 percent of all businesses, and helped bring thousands of new high wage jobs to Los Angeles and his district. As the title implies, the publication is an annual enterprise of the Pat Brown Institute of Public Affairs and California State University, Los Angeles. Los Angeles is the nation’s second most heavily populated city; it has a formidable economy that provides a financial base for the nation’s largest state economy, helping California attain its status as one of the largest economies in the world. The city is arguably one of the most culturally diverse cities in the nation and, indeed, the world. This remarkable place can be analyzed and described in many ways and each per- spective opens an exciting new window to its rich social, political, economic, and cul- tural dynamics. In this report, seven regional experts offer substantive discussions of various issues that affect the quality of life in Los Angeles. We have particularly moved away from the idea of a scorecard, since it leaves out the much needed discussions regarding how we come to know and evaluate our city. In the 2007 edition of the State of the City Report, we have asked seven Los Angeles experts to offer their opinions on demographic dynamics and the state of the economy, political representation and public perception, housing, governance, environmental justice, and gang violence. Though not intended as a comprehensive coverage of every topic, this report attempts to initiate a dialogue around important challenges and opportunities that face our city and its residents.
