@AKPsiCalPoly 3 FOREWORD

It’s rare to say that you belong to an organization that more things than I ever could have hoped to learn in the classroom. In turn, this past year it you credit with changing your life, but Alpha Kappa Psi has been my duty to pay those lessons forward, by teaching members how to network, single handedly shaped my career as a Cal Poly student. interview, cultivate their own style of leadership, and most of all learn how to rely on others for Since joining this organization my freshman year, I have help. Our brothers come from all over Cal Poly, seeking to gain business skills in a diverse and learned inclusive environment.

M Like so many other members, Alpha Kappa Psi became the gateway for me to become more involved in the community and the campus- I suddenly had the confidence and qualifications to not only pursue the opportunities I would dream about, but then achieve them as well.

Over my past few years at Cal Poly I have had the privilege of serving in a number of different leadership positions, including being an assistant for the College of Business’s Leadership Summit, and serving as a member on ASI Student Government. However, Alpha Kappa Psi will always be my home, and I will always remember it for being where I have grown the most, and more importantly, where I gained the feeling of self-worth. This feeling of belonging hasn’t come from the titles I have held, but from the relationships I have formed within this organization- something far more valuable then any LinkedIn headline, scholarship, or trophy. When I look back at my career at Cal Poly, Alpha Kappa Psi will by far be the one closest to my heart in shaping who I am today.

4 GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Building Brotherhood Our members, from the day they become brothers until the end of their lives, foster a great love of the fraternity and a fondness for brother members. At its center is a sense of duty and respect for both the fraternity and individual members. Lifelong Learning College is merely the beginning of business education. Our members share their knowledge and experiences openly with the people they work with, regardless of rank or position. In addition, they seek out opportunities to share their real-world experience with brother members, and in doing so they enhance the lifelong learning of those members. High Ethical Standards While the business world offers many opportunities for success and advancement, it also requires us to make decisions about how we succeed. Our members serve as role models through their consistently fair and ethical conduct. Improving Communities Much is expected of those to whom much is given. Business professionals who seek to improve the communities in which they do business improve lives and develop goodwill. Enhancing the Fraternity for Life College chapters serve as living laboratories for classroom concepts and professional conduct. In turn, lessons learned in the fraternity prepare members for success in the business world. Because they recognize the value and importance of our Fraternity, our members are united in their passion to build a legacy for the future.

10 A FEW PLACE WE’RE AT... Here are some of the firms that have extended internship, leadership program, or full time offers to our brothers.

“Emily,

I have forwarded all the resumes I collected at the Career Fair over to my HR team and they will start scheduling interviews soon. Even though you are only a freshman and are not our typical major we recruit, I ranked you in the top 7 applications because of your outgoing personality and leadership skills. This ranking alone, you should be proud of because I talked to 100+ students looking at this internship with the majority being upperclassmen and engineering majors. It will be HR’s ultimate decision whether or not to schedule an interview with you but I am confident you will be successful and get an internship somewhere this Emily Wong: Business summer based off of my interaction with you.” Administration Freshman -PEPSICO 11 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

As a professional fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi makes enhancing our members’ professional skills a top priority in its day to day operations- brothers are required to attend at least two events a quarter, although most exceed that requirement with the number of both internal workshops and external events Alpha Kappa Psi hosts. Furthermore, just simply being a part of the fraternity enhances the professionalism of our members, where meetings are a chance to show how they conduct themselves during formal discussion, to how they present themselves when being introduced to a professional speaker.

Before being formally initiated, recruitment classes of the fraternity undergo an intensive professional training period to further develop their business skills. Activities range from making an interview question study guide to use for future employers, hosting events for project and event management experience, to perfecting their individual resumes, LinkedIns, and email signatures. Soft skills, including giving presentations, communicating effectively, and eliminating the fear of public speaking is also stressed. New members of Alpha Kappa Psi receive a workshop on the Truths About Leadership. Members are also further encouraged to give their own professional presentations to the chapter: topics brothers have presented include an in depth look at what makes a great public speaker, the truths about leadership, and ten steps towards a better “thank you.” All materials and resources from professional development workshops are always made available to our brothers on our organization’s website. Professional Development Highlights:

Target Recruiting Session: Human resources representatives from Target’s corporate headquarters hosted an interactive workshop about how to approach recruiters during the career fair, and provided key things they look for in a management based interview.

Fostering Creativity: Student Life and Leadership staff member Renoda Campbell shared her story about incorporating her life long interest in creativity into her professional career.

Armanino Speakers Panel: Cal Poly and Pi Rho chapter alumnus Jeremy Sucharsky brought a panel of consultants from Armanino to give insight on what skills make a good consultant.

Executive Partners Quarterly Forum: Every quarter, Alpha Kappa Psi assists the Executive Partners Program in hosting and advertising their forums. This past year, Candace Markwith spoke about the business side of running Sierra Vista Hospital. Later in the year, James Lewis talked about the profession of city management.

LinkedIn Review: Members of the chapter’s professional committee conducted a comprehensive review of every brother’s Pi Rho chapter alum Jeremy LinkedIn profile, providing commentary and recommendations for improvement. Synergy between members is the heart and soul of every successful organization. Alpha Kappa Psi prides itself on fostering a strong sense of group cohesion and brotherhood amongst its members.

Brotherhood to the organization is more than just being able to work well together however. Brothers of Alpha Kappa Psi are there to support each other through any type of situation, and are there to teach other lessons fundamental to personal growth and development. These are the relationships that make members proud to be a part of Alpha Kappa Psi.

The annual event provides opportunities to not only explore the past history of the organization, but also to network with professionals in the Bay Area who have benefited from being in AKPsi.

Fall Kickoff: Before our fall recruitment period began, the fraternity held a brotherhood kickoff, for a chance to get reintroduced to each other after the summer. Quarterly goals were introduced, and members made a list of personal goals they wanted to accomplish over the year.

Faculty Initiation Banquet: This year the Pi Rho chapter initiated OCOB faculty member Ronda Beaman as an honorary member of the fraternity, to recognize the significant contributions she has made to not only the organization itself, but the individual members she has mentored throughout the years. 22 “... AKPsi provides superior support to Cal Poly and the College of Business”

May 13, 2014

Dear Awards Committee,

I have been privileged to work with several members of Alpha Kappa Psi (AKPsi) at Cal Poly for at least 2 years while I have been a mentor for the Executive Partners Program (EPP). They “... AKPsi accomplishes its have been some of the most successful students I have mentored and I often come to them to help younger students who need direction and support. It is very apparent to me that the objective of being a fraternity that organization has a positive impact on its members as I have seen them grow and prosper as soon fosters growth and professionalism as they become involved. Students who join have the opportunity to interact with other in its members.” successful students who can steer them in the right direction, give counsel on concentrations and provide contacts for internships. AKPsi teaches students how to network, which is critical these days in the job search process. I have also noticed that many of the AKPsi students are the ones Kathy Wright who sign up for key opportunities EPP provides such as recruitment, panel discussions and training. This illustrates that AKPsi accomplishes its objective of being a fraternity that fosters Director, Executive Partners Program growth and professionalism in its members.

In addition, AKPsi works very well with EPP to publicize our Quarterly Speaker Forums on campus. And finally, members of AKPsi volunteered to help me with a workshop I am conducting later this month on leading an organization. They heard about the workshop and initiated contact with me to help in any way they could.

For these reasons, I believe AKPsi is a top contender for “OCOB Club of the Year” and I would wholeheartedly recommend their selection for this honor.

Best regards,

Kathy Wright Director, Executive Partners Program Orfalea College of Business [email protected] 209-872-2175

24 To whom this may concern:

I am writing in support of Alpha Kappa Psi for the 2013-2014 Orfalea College of Business Club of the Year Award.

I have both witnessed and been a part of Cal Poly’s Alpha Kappa Psi chapter. My older sister, Kristen Hays, became a member in the fall of 2005, looking for an opportunity to meet more people on campus and in the college of business. Little did Kristen know that of all of the changes she would endure throughout college and some of the most important things that she would learn, would ultimately combine to where she is today- successful with coworkers of higher and lower seniority, friends, and ultimately leadership competency in the Ernst & Young Accounting workforce. Seeing my sister’s personal development so significantly influenced through the soft skills she acquired with Alpha Kappa Psi membership, and the professional skills she gained from “... it [AKPsi] is the perfect opportu- the structure of this fraternity, I knew I wanted to be a member at Cal Poly before I even graduated high school. nity for members to experience, take leadership roles, take risks Alpha Kappa Psi teaches its membership how to market themselves to a potential employer. This club’s structure not only prepares each member to learn and practice building their resumes, and make mistakes, all in a truly interview, etiquette, and networking skills, but after learning these skills, those Alpha Kappa Psi members become the trainers for the following recruitment classes. Not only is every Alpha Kappa forgiving environment with a broth- Psi member prepared to interview for positions during and after college, but they are also prepared erhood of support to build them to help recruit more employees and understand the basics of an Human Resources department which diversifies their portfolio and makes them even more valuable as a candidate and employee. back up from any failures along the As a marketing graduate from Cal Poly I began working for a political consulting firm and managed the firm’s Monterey County office. My role began small but quickly grew as my boss realized how way. much more I understood about running a business than just marketing; soon I was screening, first round interviewing and making recommendations for potential candidates for the firm through a hiring process that I was granted the freedom to structure myself. Heather Hays 11th President of the Pi Rho Chapter Along with technical skills, general business tools learned though Alpha Kappa Psi membership at Cal Poly, this current chapter has learned so much more from the recent growth and development Cal Poly Panhellenic President, 2011-2012 this club has experienced over the past few years. Current members have learned the importance of recruitment and the patience for the hard work that it takes to find quality in membership and not Advisor, CSU Monterey Bay Colony just quantity. They have experienced the affects of turnover and seen how the direction of a company can greatly shift with new leadership and membership. They’ve learned that it is important as leaders to make sure the morale of a company is in check before recruiting members into their organization, directly influencing the level of productivity from their members, exactly like a company with their employees.

There are many things that people can learn from going to school at Cal Poly and being fortunate to call their home the Orfalea College of Business. Along with courses learned and other clubs and campus memberships, Alpha Kappa Psi truly leads its members through the full learn by doing experience. This membership not only teaches and encourages setting goals; learning about business and preparing resumes and other tools in order to successfully get a foot in the door of the working world, but so much more. These students are a part of an organization that runs itself as a business; it is the perfect opportunity for members to experience, take leadership roles, take risks and make mistakes, all in a truly forgiving environment with a brotherhood of support to build them back up from any failures along the way.

This 2013-2014 chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi has really done it all. They not only are living up to the values of our organization (Brotherhood, Unity, Leadership, Education), developing their members through a positive and well rounded membership experience (soft skills and hands on professional and business experience), providing networking and learning opportunities (Executive Partners, Alumni to Go Events), but they also give back to the community (hosting a philanthropic golf tournament in support of One Dollar for Life) and student body around them (offering professional portraits for LinkedIn to Cal Poly students). This group of talented and driven students, not only shapes and inspires members within Alpha Kappa Psi, but by their drive and passion inspires other students as well.

It has been my pleasure to share with you a little more what an incredible and well-rounded experience Alpha Kappa Psi provides to its membership. As a past president of this Cal Poly chapter and current advisor for another California chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi, I am very proud and could not be more supportive of this group of leaders to receive recognition as the 2013-2014 Orfalea College of Business, Club of the Year recipients.
