Arthropods serve this purpose because they are abundant and diverse in urban areas, and relatively easy to collect. Over seven years, in the Central Arizona Phoenix area, arthropod communities in three urban habitat categories were collected and compared to arthropods in natural desert using pitfall traps and non-parametric analyses.

Importation of Fresh Fruit of Avocado, Persea americana Miller var. ‘Hass’, into the Continental United States from Colombia A Pathway-Initiated Risk Assessment October 31, 2016 Version 4 Agency Contact: Plant Epidemiology and Risk Analysis Laboratory Center for Plant Health Science and Technology United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Plant Protection and Quarantine 1730 Varsity Drive, Suite 300 Raleigh, NC 27606 Pest Risk Assessment for Hass Avocado from Colombia Executive Summary The Republic of Colombia requested approval for imports into the continental United States of fresh avocado fruit, Persea americana Mill. var. ‘Hass’, without a peduncle. Because this commodity has not been imported from Colombia before, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) conducted a pathway-initiated risk assessment to determine the risks associated with importing these ‘Hass’ avocados. We developed a list of pests known to occur in Colombia and associated with avocado based on the scientific literature, port-of-entry pest interception data, and information provided by the Colombian Ministry for Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA). Commercial ‘Hass’ avocado is a conditional non-host for the fruit flies, Anastrepha fraterculus, A. striata, and Ceratitis spp. Thus, we did not list these organisms in the assessment. We determined that three quarantine arthropod pests were likely to follow the pathway, and qualitatively analyzed them to determine the unmitigated risk posed to the United States. Pest Taxonomy Pest Risk Potential Heilipus lauri Boheman Coleoptera: Curculionidae High Heilipus trifasciatus (Fabricius) Coleoptera: Curculionidae High Stenoma catenifer Walsingham Lepidoptera: Elaschistidae High All pests were rated High and for pests with High pest risk potential, mitigations beyond port-of- entry inspection are recommended.

Antenna, trichobothrium, cave organ, morphology, phylogenetic systematics, Heteroptera, Reduviidae Abstract. Sensillar structures of the antennal pedicel are investigated in Reduviidae and Pachynomidae. The cave organ, a pre sumably chemoreceptive structure, previously reported only for haematophagous Triatominae, is described here also for representa tives of Peiratinae, Reduviinae and Stenopodainae. The systematic implication of the occurrence of this sensillar structure is discussed. Further, four sclerites located in the membrane between pedicel and preflagelloid are described and used as landmarks for the recognition of individual trichobothria in Reduviidae and Pachynomidae. Characters of the trichobothrial socket are studied and discussed systematically. Homology of the distalmost trichobothrium of Reduviidae with the single trichobothrium in Pachynomidae is proposed. This hypothesis is based on the structure of the cuticle surrounding the trichobothria and on the trichobothrial position relative to the four sclerites of the pedicello-flagellar articulation. The single trichobothrium present in most nymphs corresponds to the distalmost trichobothrium in adult Reduviidae in position and structural detail. A reasonable hypotheses on the homology of indi vidual trichobothria of the proximal row or field seen in most Reduviidae can so far only be formulated for Peiratinae. • Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Reduviidae)
BOLETIN DEL MUSEO ENTOMOLÓGICO FRANCISCO LUÍS GALLEGO ARTÍCULO ORIGINAL CLASSIFICATION OF HARPACTORINAE, ASSASSIN BUGS (HEMIPTERA: HETEROPTERA: REDUVIIDAE) Dimitri Forero, Ph.D. Heteropteran Systematics Laboratory, Department of Entomology, University of California Riverside, Riverside, CA 92521, USA. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A brief synopsis on the classification of the Harpactorinae is presented. The two tribes found in the Neotropical region are discussed and future directions for research are highlighted. Introduction Reduviidae, or assassin bugs, have more than 6.000 described species, and is one of the three most speciose families of Hemiptera (Forero 2008), and the second largest of Heteroptera, exhibiting a range of life histories (Schuh and Slater 1995, Weirauch and Schuh 2011). Species in this family are mostly predatory, although species of Triatominae are hematophagous, in which some are important vectors of Chagas disease in Latin America (Lent & Wygodzinsky 1979). Although generally polyphagous, some of the predatory groups show affinities for particular prey, such as ants in Holoptilinae (Jacobson 1911, Miller 1953, Poinar 1991), termites in Salyavata (Salyavatinae) (McMahan 1982, 1983), or millipedes in Ectrichodiinae (Miller 1953, Carpintero and Maldonado 1996). The morphological diversity exhibited by Reduviidae is also reflected in the number of subfamilies so far proposed, which ranges from 21 to 32 (Maldonado 1990, Putshkov and Putshkov 1985). Recent phylogenetic analysis of the family might help to clarify and stabilize several of the classification issues (Weirauch 2008). 9 Volumen 3 • Número 1 Marzo • 2011 Of all Reduviidae subfamilies, Classification of Harpactorinae Harpactorinae is by far the largest in terms of numbers of species described, Given its large size, it is not surprising that with more than 2.000 species described many classification schemes have been (Maldonado 1990, Putshkov and Putshkov proposed for species of this subfamily.

  • Evolutionary Cytogenetics in Heteroptera
Journal of Biological Research 5: 3 – 21, 2006 J. Biol. Res. is available online at http://www.jbr.gr — INVITED REVIEW — Evolutionary cytogenetics in Heteroptera ALBA GRACIELA PAPESCHI* and MARI´A JOSE´ BRESSA Laboratorio de Citogenética y Evolucio´ n, Departamento de EcologÈ´a, Genética y Evolucio´ n, Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina Received: 2 September 2005 Accepted after revision: 29 December 2005 In this review, the principal mechanisms of karyotype evolution in bugs (Heteroptera) are dis- cussed. Bugs possess holokinetic chromosomes, i.e. chromosomes without primary constriction, the centromere; a pre-reductional type of meiosis for autosomes and m-chromosomes, i.e. they segregate reductionally at meiosis I; and an equational division of sex chromosomes at anaphase I. Diploid numbers range from 2n=4 to 2n=80, but about 70% of the species have 12 to 34 chromosomes. The chromosome mechanism of sex determination is of the XY/XX type (males/females), but derived variants such as an X0/XX system or multiple sex chromosome sys- tems are common. On the other hand, neo-sex chromosomes are rare. Our results in het- eropteran species belonging to different families let us exemplify some of the principal chromo- some changes that usually take place during the evolution of species: autosomal fusions, fusions between autosomes and sex chromosomes, fragmentation of sex chromosomes, and variation in heterochromatin content. Other chromosome rearrangements, such as translocations or inver- sions are almost absent. Molecular cytogenetic techniques, recently employed in bugs, represent promising tools to further clarify the mechanisms of karyotype evolution in Heteroptera.
