A high offi cial living in the late eleventh century, Skylitzes used a number of existing Greek histories (some of them no longer extant) to create a digest of the previous three centuries. Magruder, III All rights reserved Abstract Byzantine icons have attracted artists and art historians to what they saw as the flat style of large painted panels. They tend to understand this flatness as a repudiation of the Classical priority to represent Nature and an affirmation of otherworldly spirituality. However, many extant sacred portraits from the Byzantine period were executed in relief in precious materials, such as gemstones, ivory or gold. Byzantine writers describe contemporary icons as lifelike, sometimes even coming to life with divine power. The question is what Byzantine Christians hoped to represent by crafting small icons in precious materials, specifically cameos. The dissertation catalogs and analyzes Byzantine cameos from the end of Iconoclasm (843) until the fall of Constantinople (1453). They have not received comprehensive treatment before, but since they represent saints in iconic poses, they provide a good corpus of icons comparable to icons in other media. Their durability and the difficulty of reworking them also makes them a particularly faithful record of Byzantine priorities regarding the icon as a genre. In addition, the dissertation surveys theological texts that comment on or illustrate stone to understand what role the materiality of Byzantine cameos played in choosing stone relief for icons. Finally, it examines Byzantine epigrams written about or for icons to define the terms that shaped icon production. -

Jonathan Shepard publications without, however, aspiring to completeness. Paul Stephenson has provided a valuable review-article of secondary literature published in a western language on the history of the early Hungarians, while his book on Byzantium’s Balkan frontier sets the activities of Hungarians in the tenth century within the broader context of imperial Byzantine diplomacy, emergent Balkan polities and the needs of nomads. Stephenson and Tóth, building on the earlier work of Macartney and Göckenjan, point to the strong probability that the lands east of the Tisza were occupied by the De administrando’s Kavars (Kabaroi). These, in turn, may be associated with the “Khalisioi”/Kaliz, a grouping of Khazar provenance known from later Hungarian sources to have occupied the valley of the Tisza in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Constantine VII could well have drawn heavily on Kavar informants for his contemporary data about the Hungarians’ lands, and the De administrando’s generous coverage of this grouping in comparison with the other units of Hungarians becomes the more understandable. In addition, a number of scholars have independently reached the conclusion that imperial attention to, knowledge about, and policy towards a region or people fluctuated drastically in accordance with the empire’s ever- changing needs and apprehensions of perils. Stephenson’s book shows how adaptable Byzantine administrative arrangements were after the defeat of the Rus and the Bulgarians in 971. Comparable flexibility was applied to the northern borderlands after final victory over the Bulgarians had been won in 1018, and in the territories reconquered from the eastern Muslims in the 960s and 970s. -
The Perfect Ruler in the Art and Literature of Medieval Bulgaria*
http://dx.doi.org/10.18778/2084-140X.01.05 Studia Ceranea 1, 2011, p. 71-86 Elka Bakalova (Sofia) The Perfect Ruler in the Art and Literature of Medieval Bulgaria* There is no surviving literary text of medieval Bulgaria that explicitly expresses the concept of the perfect ruler . Yet there are other sources, both verbal and visual, providing us with information on that issue . In this paper I try to present some of them, related to the image of the Bulgarian king Ivan Alexander (1331–1371) . I focus on him mostly because the 14th century – an extremely important period in medieval Bulgarian culture – is still subject to unfinished research, scholarly discussion and re-assessment . On the other hand, Ivan Alexander is the only Bulgarian ruler whose images survived in great number . Chronologically, they cover almost the entire pe- riod of his relatively long and successful reign . My long research on the king’s images in Bulgarian medieval art has naturally led me to the written depictions preserved in Old Bulgarian manuscripts, among which the most detailed is the one contained in the famous encomium of the king, part of the Sofia Psalter(1337) . This is a short text, included in the manuscript of a Psalter ordered by Ivan Alexander and written in the monastery of Kouklen, which is now kept in the library of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (and hence is known as the Sofia Psalter)1 . The encomium itself is interpolated after the psalms and the fifth song by Isaiah . Gennady Estraikh Sholem Aleichem and Qumran: Jewish-Related Scholarship in the Soviet Union, 1953–1967 The Jewishacademic centers established in the earlySoviet state functionedal- most exclusively in Yiddish and had eclipsed or subdued the remnants of Jewish studies pursued at academic and independent organizations of the pre-1917pe- riod. In Kiev,the most vigorous of the new centers developedultimatelyinto the Institute of JewishProletarian Culture(IJPC), astructural unit of the Ukrainian AcademyofSciences.By1934, the IJPC had on its payroll over seventy people in academic and administrative roles.Two years later,however,the Stalinist purgesofthe time had consumed the IJPC and sent manyofits employees to prison to be later sentenced to death or gulag.¹ In Minsk, the authorities similarly destroyed the academic Institute of National Minorities, which mainlydealt with Jewish-related research.² By this time, all Jewish(in fact,Yiddish-language) ed- ucational institutions,includinguniversity departments, ceased to exist.Some scholars moved to otherfields of research or left academia entirely. Soviet school instruction and culturalactivity in Yiddish emergedinthe territories of Poland, Romania, and the Baltic states,forciblyacquiredin1939and 1940,but after June 22, 1941, all these disappearedinthe smoke of World WarII. However,the IJPC had an afterlife: in the fall of 1936,the authorities permit- ted the formation of asmall academic unit named the Bureau(kabinet)for Re- search on Jewish Literature, Language, and Folklore. The Bureauendured until 1949,when it fell victim to acampaign that targeted the remainingJewish insti- tutions. Introduction
Introduction Since the time of Constantine i (r. 306–337) until 1453 or alternatively until 1461, there had been constant fluctuations in the geopolitical and cultural bor ders of the Christian Roman Empire, what today is commonly called the Byzan tine Empire.1 The arrival, conquest, and settlement of Turkish Muslim groups from the east at the end of the eleventh century ultimately resulted in the em pire’s political demise in the fifteenth century, triggering one of the last chap ters in the history of cultural change in the Mediterranean basin.2 This cultural change—the Islamization and Turkification of Asia Minor (Anatolia) and the Balkans—was a highly complicated and nonlinear process in the midst of a plethora of policies by the Byzantines, Latins, Franks, Arme nians, Georgians, Syrians, Serbs, Bulgarians, Turks, Persians, Arabs and Mon gols resulting in constantly shifting geopolitical borders (see maps 1–8).3 These groups all constructed their own political histories and interpretations of events in as many or more languages.4 The Turkish Muslims’ military and political conquest of Anatolia was swift er than the cultural incorporation of the territory and its people into the Turkishspeaking Muslim world. Islam achieved its dominance over Christian ity between 1100 and 1400. Significant evidence for the minting coins or literary production in Persian and Arabic, the established languages of Islam, dates to the late twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
