Introduction

This directory has been created to provide a useful source of information for residents in the parish of Sockbridge and Tirril. It came about because residents were asked, as part of a Community Led Planning process, what actions would improve the area in which we live. One clear indication was that a directory of services, activities and resources available within the locality would be of value to all residents, no matter how long they have lived in the parish. A copy of this publication will also appear on the parish website, where any updates or amendments will be made ahead of any future reprints of a hard copy.

We are grateful to the following for their support: -

------6. OUT AND ABOUT IN THE PARISH

1. Local Footpaths See the centre spread maps showing popular local walks. 1. Towards Askham: from the Village Hall walk south, up through Tirril Farm and the enclosed path. Go through the next gate (after the copse) and over two stiles and a further gate, before turning left past a limekiln to reach the Askham Road opposite Low Close. Turn right to Askham. [Or left to Tirril] 2. To the Askham Road: from the Village Hall, pass Lime Grove, turn left through the Grove Farm gateway, and two barred gates. Turn right (south) at the end of the long field, cross the stile into Trod Field, and take the diagonal path to a stile onto the Askham Road. 3. To Stainton Bridge and Sockbridge Mill: From Tirril [next to Brookside] walk north through Tirril Croft to Sockbridge Lane; descend through the gap in the wall just across the bridge. Walk up the small field (Sockbridge Green) to a complicated stile leading to the children’s play area. From the play area walk down Uckerdale, first to a stile, then bearing slightly left towards the footbridge (Stainton Bridge). EITHER: (1) Turn left to return via Sockbridge Mill Lane; OR (2) cross the bridge, turn left and explore the woodland cliff north of the river where a high level path leads to Stainton, or continue straight ahead to Penrith via Redhills. 4. To Yanwath: Walk to Stainton Bridge, as before, but turn right and follow the path through Roe Bank Woods towards Yanwath Hall. Return the same way or by road. 5. Celleron Lane Circuit: Walk west along the B5320 and turn left up Celleron Lane. At the top of Celleron Lane, opposite Celleron House, cross the stile and walk down through three fields (two more stiles with direction arrows) to the main road close to Barton Church lane. Turn right on the B5320 to reach the bridleway to Thorpe, which starts approximately 300 yards east of Kirkbarrow on your left. 6. Barton and Pooley Bridge: From Thorpe End take the bridleway east to Kirkbarrow (the last few hundred yards are on the B5320). Turn right into Barton Church lane. Turn sharp left after passing the Church and the Vicarage. Turn right through an archway into Barton Kirke Farm. Pass the farm buildings and turn left (south west) towards Pooley Bridge via Mill Moor. Turn sharp left towards an isolated barn (crossing a ditch) then 90 degrees right and away from the barn into a field. Follow the hedgerow on your left until you zig-zag left to enter an enclosed lane. From here: EITHER keep in the 8

enclosed lane to cross Mill Moor and reach the B5320 via the lane from Hole House Farm to Bowerbank. OR leave the enclosed lane through a gate on the right, and take the path that leads through the Hole House Farm, then descends to the river bank and reaches Pooley Bridge via the meadow behind the Sun Hotel. As part of the CLP Project, detailed guides to these routes will be published in due course and made available at the Queen’s Head and Chambers Garage.

2. Dogs and Agriculture Almost all local footpaths are through or adjacent to productive grazing land. Our Community Survey identified the anxieties farmers have about the serious impact that thoughtless dog-walking can have on livestock. Crops can also be damaged or soiled.  Please ensure that your dog is under close control on grazing fields at any time, but especially at lambing time.  Lamb fatalities are much higher near footpaths because disturbance by dogs can cause separation, mis-mothering, rejection by ewes, and even death.  25% to 40% of abortions in cattle, up to six months, are linked to Neosporosis. Neospora is a parasite that can be found in dog poo. It remains active, even in silage, and through this can infect cattle. Once infected, cattle remain infected.  Walkers should pick up after their dogs when walking through grazing fields, whether livestock is present or not, just as they would on pavements. The parasite can remain dormant for around 6 months. There are several bins for dog waste situated around the village. Please use these.

3. What to do about Stock that isn’t where they should be If you come across livestock loose on the road, it is essential to follow the Highway Code advice. Local farmers may also be able to help. Animals that are being herded from one place to another on a road will have a farm worker at the head and rear of the group. If you are in a car, please be patient, it’s a fact of life for people in rural areas. However, loose livestock can be dangerous and you should not approach them as they will probably be frightened. Loud noises or flashing lights will only make things worse. Contact either the police or RSPCA for advice.

4. District Council Dog Control Regulations Eden District Council's 'Public Space Protection Order' applies to "any land to which there is public access, within 200 metres of a public highway where there is a speed limit of 40 mph or less." It makes it an offence to · fail to remove dog faeces, · not keep a dog on a leash; or · permit a dog to enter land from which dogs are excluded. An offence under these headings can lead to a fixed penalty notice of £55, or if convicted in a magistrates court, a fine of up to £1,000. The public are entitled to report offenders to Community Wardens by calling 01768 817817 and providing details of the offence and their own name and address. ------

7. FACILITIES / UTILITIES

Allotments. There are currently no allotments in the parish but there is a hope that land will be identified through the Parish Council for this use.

Village Oil Scheme (and oil buddies) latest data The Sockbridge and Tirril Oil Buying Group has over 60 members and the organiser gets the lowest price from oil suppliers each time we order. Members save around £30 on each dedlivery because of a discount of around 8% on the supplier's normal price. Orders are placed in February, April, June, August, October and December. For more information contact Simon Brown at [email protected] or 01768 867687. If you do not have email there is a network of 'oil buddies' who will place your order for you.

Mobile Phone and Broadband Reception Access to services or communication with some of the bodies mentioned in this guide depends on internet access. Mobile reception depends on location, with some parts of the village getting better reception than others, regardless of provider. However, 80% of villagers use just three mobile phone companies and our research has identified local satisfaction levels with these three are as follows: Provider Good Fair Poor 02 56% 17% 28%

Vodafone 41% 44% 16% EE 14% 52% 34%

Variation in broadband speeds is influenced by the distance from the cabinet at Sockbridge Lane junction. For Broadband, 51% used BT, while a further 37% used three other providers. In 2018 satisfaction levels with these four providers were as follows: Provider Good Fair Poor

BT 48% 33% 19% Plusnet 60% 40% 0% Sky 23% 23% 54% TalkTalk 45% 36% 18%
