Jacopo Costa Prince in the early 80s: considerations on the structural functions of performative gestures. Transcribing Prince's music can be a very frustrating exercise, as the notes that are put on a score (often quite ordinary) do no justice to the expressive richness we perceive when we listen to his songs. In my intervention, I will propose an analysis of the performative gestures in Prince's music, focusing on a few excerpts from his production of the years 1980-1984 (in terms of albums, from Dirty Mind to Purple Rain). The hypothesis to be tested is that in Prince's music a certain gestural approach to the performance (both instrumental and vocal) has an authentic structural function for the music: in other words, this gestural approach is not simply related to the field of musical interpretation, but has a constitutive function at the formal level of composition.

An Interdisciplinary Conference June 2 – 3, 2020 Minneapolis, MN Conference Presenters and Abstracts Hosted by The School of Arts and Media, University of Salford, UK Organized by Dr. Kirsty Fairclough, School of Arts and Media, University of Salford Kristen Zschomler, Minneapolis-based historian and writer, Sound History, LLC Chris Aguilar-Garcia Independent Scholar, USA Dirty Mind and Controversy: Creating a Queer Icon Sex and sexuality were key elements of the Prince persona and catalog from the release of his debut album and first single, “Soft and Wet.” While his early releases were essentially heteronormative and barely transgressive, particularly at the tail end of the sexually liberated disco era, in 1980’s “Dirty Mind,” we see the beginnings of a queer sensibility. Beyond what critic Ken Tucker termed a “liberating lewdness” in his Rolling Stone review, the album also included Prince’s first songs of outright social commentary with “Uptown,” and “Partyup.” In “Uptown,” Prince is pegged as gay because of his clothes and hair, and in “Partyup,” the 30- minute album closes out to the defiant chant “You’re gonna have to fight your own damn war / ‘Cause we don’t wanna fight no more!” A year later, in the title track to 1981’s Controversy, Prince ponders, “Am I straight or gay?,” a bold question at a time fellow Queer icons Elton John and Freddie Mercury were not publicly out. In “Sexuality,” Prince goes on to proclaim the Second Coming not as the return of Christ, but the dawn of an “anything goes” sexual revolution free of segregation. Within the framework of these two definitive albums, Prince solidly planted himself in the pantheon of Queer icons, laying the groundwork for a blockbuster career that relentlessly defied social and industry norms.

He counts sharing a spin class with Her Madgesty as a religious experience and life high point. New Power, Sexuality and Emancipation: The revolutionary queerness of Prince through a Foucauldian lens. From arriving on the 1980’s music scene in bikini briefs, eyeliner and high heels, singing songs about incest and masturbation, to a fight for emancipation from recording industry contracts, Prince consistently held the power dynamics of sexuality and domination as key to liberation from the binds of what French philosopher and social theorist Michel Foucault termed ‘government of individualization’. Prince demonstrated his full-throttled approach to creating art not only as objects in the form of music, motion pictures, and videos, but as a mindful daily practice of living art and resistance. Prince’s vibrant life force enlivened Foucault’s belief that, “we should not have to refer the creative activity of somebody to the kind of relation he has to himself, but should relate the kind of relation one has to oneself to a creative activity.” For Prince, power also derived from his refusal to conform -- demanding to produce his debut album, creating side projects as additional creative outlets, changing his name to a symbol, and creating a pioneering web- distribution platform.
