Shared Collection for June: Shared Collection for June: Half of this month’s unpledged cash collection will go to LGBT Asylum Task Force in Worcester, which supports the basic human needs of LGBTQI people seeking asylum in the US. They depend on donations and volunteers to help asylum seekers. It takes approximately $1,100 per month to provide the basic necessities of shelter, food, andsupport for each asylum seeker. This past year they supported 45 people fleeing persecution and maintained their 100% success rate of folks granted asylum.     :: View email as a web page :: In a recent episode of Indiecast, we talked about how Arcade Fire’s 2010 landmark album The Suburbs helped to mark the end of the aughts. In our latest episode, we pick up this thread to talk about one of the most momentous years in recent indie history, 2013, which in many ways feels like the beginning of the 2010s. At the time, there was a long-running movement to make pop influences more acceptable in indie music. In 2013, however, there was a decisive shift beyond “acceptable” to making indie music rooted in the principles of pop THE standard for “innovative” or “forward-thinking” or simply “hip” indie music. The aesthetics of an album like The Monitor or Celebration Rock — rooted in more classic ideas about indie music being guitar-centric, aggressive, gritty, somewhat poorly recorded, and derived from punk — would be placed firmly outside the mainstream of what was praised in the press or put at the center of indie. American Graffiti is the title of George Lucas' film that in 1973 launched a phenomenon in the USA: a revival of the Fifties and the Sixties. There was something innocent and magic in those decades that went lost in the Vietnam War and the oil crisis of the Seventies. The rediscovery of those decades is also a rediscovery of the roots of rock and roll. After the fall of alternative rock, Seventies music had become largely corporate-driven. Genres that had been created as rebellion to the Establishment were rapidly becoming mainstream. The music of the Fifties and the early Sixties sounded more authentic. Broadway and Hollywood focused on the Billboard charts, on the one-hit wonders that went lost after the deluge of 1966-67. Thousands of kids playing in their garages and basements focused on the bands that were playing in garages and basements in the Sixties. The second half of the Seventies saw a revival of the whole spectrum: rockabilly, surf music, folk-rock, psychedelia, even horror soundtracks. It was as if an archeological frenzy was shaking the musical fabric of the nation.

    PART IX: 1960s Musiciansi The Hotel Albert became home to any number of rock musicians in the 1960s. This is the only part of the Albert‟s history that has been written about to any extent, chronicled in May 1968 an article in The Eye magazine by Lillian Roxon, author of Lillian Roxon’s Rock Encyclopedia. Roxon, a music journalist of the 1960s, has been called the “Mother of Rock.” Her article about the Hotel Albert called it the “New York home to rock‟s greatest.” It opens: It is the best of hotels, it is the worst of hotels; its prices are ridiculously high, its prices are astonishingly low; its corridors are filled to the brim with life, its corridors are perpetual reminders of death; staying there is the wildest, most exhilarating, dizzying, around-the-clock trip of all time; staying there is the most wretched, lonely terrifying, around-the-clock bummer of all eternity. So much for New York‟s Hotel Albert, whose distinction is not that it has housed some of the most influential rock personalities of our time (after all, so has Holiday Inn), but that it has affected them so deeply (in a way no impersonal Holiday Inn could ever hope to) that American popular music would probably never have been what it is today without it. Roxon lists dozens of musicians who stayed at the Albert: …the Paul Butterfield Blues Band got itself together under its roof;… Steve Gillette wrote his Sunshine Company hit there (“Back on the Street Again”), but was able to finish his other songs only after he moved out, which, in itself, is influence of a sort.
