SILICA Releases New Video RI-based SILICA has finally released their long-awaited visual to the hit song “Wind-Up Doll” and it lived up to fans’ expectations. SILICA is known for their unique and creative approach to pop rock music, which has always helped them stand out as a band. The lead singer, Lauren Cloutier, has a deep role in band’s creative process as the main writer and director for SILICA’S pieces. “Wind-Up Doll” is very easy to listen to, and has a soft vibe that makes it the perfect tune to listen to during long rides or nights where time feels like it has stopped. The lyrics will certainly touch home for many listeners; it describes being vulnerable to others’ mental abuse, which many of us can relate to. Like most bands before the 2020 pandemic hit, Strip Mall was playing shows and getting their sound out to Providence locals in anticipation of a new EP estimated to come out in the fall. Strip Mall is a newer PVD-based emo band out of Warwick, Rhode Island. The band consists of three members: Vinnie Ortez, Jack Anderson and Nick English. -

"We never planned to be a band. We were friends first and we just love being together," says lead singer Christian Zucconi. "Grouplove grew organically from that love." Their debut album, with the tongue-in-cheek title Never Trust a Happy Song, is quickly spreading the love, too. Their sweet and savory mix of jangly, upbeat melodies, Zucconi's anguished howl and keyboardist Hannah Hooper's coquettish backup vocals have been making the rounds in indie rock circles and on the charts. Joyful, noisy single Colours peaked at No. 12 on USA TODAY's alternative chart. Another track, Tongue Tied, lassoed the new iPod Touch commercial, which ran during the Grammy nominations concert and has continued since Thanksgiving. Add Grouplove's lock as the opening band for Young the Giant's tour in March and April, and it's no wonder they're so lovey-dovey. Happy accidents: Zucconi wasn't always this upbeat. "Before Grouplove, I was in other bands, but the timing never seemed right," he says. "I'd wake up every day depressed, I spent so many years miserable doing music. But it's wonderful now how we overcame everything together. It's funny that Grouplove is such a happy band." The band members met each other in 2008 at an artist commune in Crete. -

Take a moment to consider how you feel right here, right now. Tired is not an emotion just in case that’s your first thought. Psychologists would say that we can feel: happy, sad, surprised, afraid, disgusted, or angry. Hopefully not many of us are angry or disgusted at the moment, but it’s fascinating that our range of emotions isn’t as expansive as we may assume. When I was doing Clinical Pastoral Education, we had to identify our feelings using only four emotions: glad, sad, bad, or mad. Those were our only choices—and we were expected as chaplains to identify how we felt before and after every interaction with patients. Glad, sad, bad, or mad and ask ourselves why did we feel that way. If we had to identify John the Baptist’s emotional state as we just heard in the Gospel of Luke it would be mad. I don’t know about you, but I don’t typically call folks “broods of vipers” when I’m feeling glad. John was legitimately mad—people were being terrible to each other and life was difficult enough without people making each other’s lives even worse. He’s out there in the wilderness telling people to take better care of one other, what’s wrong with you people?! If you have two coats, share with someone who doesn’t have a coat at all. -

Cage the Elephant UNPEELED You can’t talk about music in this century without mentioning Cage the Elephant. They are the last of the great bands — or perhaps, based on new album Unpeeled, the first of the great new ones. They trace their nervy, seditious lineage from that same uncompromising place that gave us Between the Buttons-era Stones, the Pixies, the Stone Roses, the Velvet Underground and Iggy Pop. In fact, it was as if Bowling Green, Kentucky’s second-most famous export had been born full-blown and knowing when they first burst out on a stage in the early days of 2006, regurgitated whole out of the music's murky past with their platinum hair, sunglasses and Doc Martens. Mysterious, a little troubled, with an unstudied cool, a reckless charm and the striking looks of the young Yardbirds and the rakish confidence of the early Stones. “We had this picture of what a rock ‘n’ roll band was supposed to be when we started,” says vocalist Matt Shultz, who fronts the sextet comprising brother Brad on rhythm guitar, drummer Jared Champion, bassist Daniel Tichenor, lead guitarist Nick Bockrath and keyboardist Matthan Minster. “In my younger years, I definitely tried to play into personas that often hindered the material’s ability to be truly effective. Then as years passed I started wanting to shed some of that creative baggage.” That might have been the most important lesson the band learned working with Dan Auerbach, who produced Cage’s 2015 Grammy- winning Tell Me I’m Pretty album. He helped them chip away at all the things that stood between them and their songs, uncovering their own raw power. -

"I hate to use the term 'comeback album,' and it certainly wasn't planned that way, but it really feels like it," adds his longtime bandmate Jim Babjak. "It has the raw vibe of our early albums, while showing that we're moving forward and that we're still at the top of our game after 31 years." Indeed, the 13-song set shows the New Jersey-bred quartet to be making some of the most urgent music of their three-decade career, delivering their timeless brand of punchy, heartfelt rock 'n' roll with as much fire as ever. Such instantly memorable new tunes as "Sorry," "One Look At You," "A World of Our Own" and "Rings On Her Fingers" exemplify the Smithereens' trademark brand of punchy melodic songcraft, driven home by DiNizio's expressive vocals and emotionally complex lyrics, along with fiery ensemble performances that show off the uncanny musical chemistry of longstanding musical partners DiNizio, Babjak and Dennis Diken, and later addition Severo "the Thrilla" Jornacion, who joined in 2006. His occasional buoyancy has also been verified in critical studies. This dissertation has explored this range of responses to life in Hardy’s poetry using his treatment of time as the central reference. In those poems that take a dim view of reality, time is often seen as the villain. It is the invisible force which separates men from the joys of childhood and the boundless aspirations of youth, and it is nearly always part of the reason why the present is painful. A regular cycle can be observed: men move in time from faith and felicity to skepticism and sadness. The future, too, is frequently colored gray by Hardy, as he sees there one more threat to the human quest for happiness and contentment. But Hardy’s attitude toward the future is not consistently gloomy. Throughout Collected Poems one can find numerous instances where he reveals a glimmer of hope that life will eventually take a turn for the better. These poems show clearly the redemptive role played occasionally by time In Hardy’s poetry, and argue the invalidity of applying the label "pessimistic” to all of his work. -
