22 3 Knox pic It was a great year for Bucks cricket, with a much improved team display, highlighted by a number of outstanding individual Use from 2011 performances. Bucks won four of their six matches in the Unicorns Counties Championship, which in previous years would have won the Knox pic Eastern Division title, but we had to settle for fourth place in a

tight race. Use from 2011 Michael Payne, in his first year after stepping down as captain, enjoyed an historic season, becoming the first Bucks batsman ever to score centuries in three successive Championship matches. Garry Park scored the county's fastest ever century in terms of balls faced with his spectacular 100 from 50 balls against Staffordshire, while leg-spinner Stephen Croft took a remarkable 8-33 on his Championship debut against Hertfordshire. All this made it a memorable first season as captain for Tom Hampton, who led by example both on and off the field. It was a successful season, too, for the Academy side, who completed the Beynon Cup and Tom Orford Trophy double, while the boys' Under 17 team triumphed in their two-day competition. Bucks women's and girls' teams continue to improve, while the increase in seniors' cricket has led to a restructuring of the organisation of the 50s, Over 60s and Over 70s teams. In his report, Bucks's longest-serving secretary Kevin Beaumont outlines the structural changes to Minor Counties Cricket from 2020, with more emphasis on the shorter formats. We are most grateful to Andy Bone, from Shots, for providing a number of pictures free of charge to the county this year, while Kevin Beaumont and the Bucks Board's managing director Richard Hudson have also kindly provided photographs for this publication. Bill Scholes, who is leaving the area, also deserves a mention for his great work behind the scenes over the past ten seasons. My thanks also to Frank Russell for his considerable help in publishing this handbook and also his work in running the website. We look forward to the 2019 season with considerable optimism.

15 16 17 My annual expression of our thanks to individuals and clubs is as sincere as, I fear, it is repetitive. I am very fortunate to be able to call on the services of many scorers and I hope that I may be forgiven for listing the names of the most active – for the First XI Paul Dean (who also scores for all our Academy matches), Bob Lane, Ian Thompson and Simon Wastling and additionally for the Seniors John Goodman and Edward Crossley. In addition to the time that they spend at matches, Paul and John contribute greatly by compiling the annual statistics for our First and Academy XIs and our Seniors respectively. I must also thank BACO Umpires Appointments Officer, Tony Greenham, who continues to put a great deal of effort into meeting the needs of the Seniors teams. And, as ever, we continue to be very grateful to all the clubs around the County, who allow us to use their facilities to stage our home matches and are unfailingly hospitable and cooperative.

In this report, I rarely look much further ahead than the coming season, but I must report on some significant changes to the structure of Minor Counties cricket, which will take effect in 2020. Members will be aware that, for some time now, the ECB has been conducting a root and branch review of all the cricket which it funds - First Class, Minor County, Premier League and County Board. Their research has led them to put emphasis on the shorter forms of the game at the expense of the longer – hence, for instance, the new 100-ball competition. When the exercise started, there appeared to be a real possibility that they might withdraw funding for all multi-day Minor Counties cricket. However, industrious efforts by a working group, consisting of ECB and Minor County representatives, assisted by strong support for multi-day cricket in a player survey conducted by the ECB and favourable comments from several First Class coaches, has convinced them of the value of this format. That has not removed the desire to increase the amount of “short-format” cricket, which is perceived to be more attractive to younger players and potential spectators. One point which was made last autumn was that some 75% of the ECB funding which we receive is effectively spent upon our 3-day competition, which is not in line with this broad objective. An additional significant factor influencing the review was that a number of Minor Counties reported that they were unable to field their strongest teams for all six Championship matches, as players were either committed to University matches and/or unable to take six pairs of days’ leave from paid employment.

The outcome of all this will be the loss of two of the present six annual Championship matches, but this will be compensated for, at least in part, by a return to a group format for the Knockout Trophy competition, providing three more one-day matches. Additionally, it is anticipated that each Minor County will be given a home match in either T20 or 50-over format against a First Class county (the latter being expected to put out as full-strength a team as possible). This should both attract spectators who might not otherwise come to Minor County matches and offer opportunities for fund-raising.

We and many other counties genuinely regret the loss of two 3-day matches – as, I am aware, will many of our Members. However, one very pleasing element is that the structure of the competition will change, with the Eastern and Western Divisions each being split into a first and second division, both of five counties. Thus, after many years of having promoted the cause, we shall finally find ourselves in a position where from 2020 we shall play every other county in our division, with promotion and relegation at stake. This will mean that both every match will matter and there will no longer be the possibility (which, incidentally, came about on the last three occasions that we won the Division) of the divisional winner not having played the runner-up

I apologise if I appear to have dwelt overly long on this subject, but these are important issues and what I have written reflects the views of both your Committee and, I believe, the majority of other Minor Counties. 16 17 The Buckinghamshire side who faced Bedfordshire at Tring Park Seated: Matt Rance, Mike Payne, Tom Hampton (captain), Garry Park, Shelvin Gumbs Cameron Parsons Dan Marles, Teddy Casterton, Jason Harrison (director of cricket), Ian Thompson (scorer) Standing: Ian Hodgson (chairman), Simon Stanway (coach,) Stephen Croft (12th man), Masoor Khan, Robin Pritchard, Jon Burden,

18 We are fortunate to enjoy very good relations between the County Club and the County Cricket Board at various levels and we are at the early stages of exploring with the latter, how we might work more effectively together, with a view to both achieving economies of scale and improving further the level of co-operation in areas such as coaching and player development. I hope to be able to report significant progress on this in twelve months’ time.

Turning to the nearer future: we approach the new season with confidence and enthusiasm; at the time of writing, we expect all our regular players to continue to be available and welcome Conrad Louth, a batsman who has moved home south from Lincolnshire, where he has an excellent record, covering several years.

Off the field, your Committee has worked as hard as ever and I am most grateful to all of them. We have two changes to the Committee. Bill Scholes is expecting to move away from the area and so has stepped down after 11 years of excellent service. He has been tireless in his efforts to identify new methods of fund-raising and find sponsors, but he will surely be best remembered for the outstanding match booklets which he produces for all our home games - they have rightly received great and constant praise from spectators and have been emulated by several of our opponents. Also stepping down, for personal reasons, is John Turberville, who has not only been a very active contributor during his five years on the Committee but has been for considerably more years, and remains, an outstandingly generous sponsor. We owe them both a great debt of gratitude and I am very pleased that we shall continue to see them frequently at our matches. I am delighted that in their place the Committee will benefit from the skills and great enthusiasm of Su Klyne, who will be known to many as a very accomplished scorer, and John’s son, David, who has been an active supporter of the Club for many years.

As ever, I wish all our teams and Members a very enjoyable and successful summer’s cricket; I hope that those responsible for preparing the grounds where we play will forgive me for wishing for a summer similar to last year’s!

OBITUARIES

TOBY DAVIDSON, who scored regularly for the Bucks Under 16 and 17 sides and once for the senior side, died in April after a long battle with cancer at the age of 55. A larger than life character, ‘The Jugster’ was a legend at Long Marston. But his main scoring duties were at Tring Park, for whom he scored in 233 Home Counties Premier League games between 2003 and 2017. He was renowned for his individual method of ‘linear’ scoring, which was always meticulously and neatly prepared. He produced framed scoresheets for memorable individual performances, which were highly regarded by the recipients. He was a supporter of Warwickshire.

A former notable Bucks cricketer BRIAN LUCAS died last March at the age of 83. As a 17-year-old pupil at Slough Grammar School in 1952, Brian was in the Bucks side that won the Minor Counties Championship under the legendary Australian -keeper Ben Barnett, who Brian says, was the best captain he played under. In all, he played 40 Championship game for Bucks between 1951 and 1964. A hard-hitting batsman and a brilliant cover point fielder, he scored 1,030 runs (average 21.02), with a top score of 100 not out. Bucks Under 16s, who played Lincolnshire at Sleaford pictured with He joined Beaconsfield from Slough in the early 1960s, and was treasurerToby Davidson (scorer) - Simon Veys, Billy Hunt, Sean Potter, Cameron Denton, at the Wilton Park club for a remarkable 50 years until 2015. Josh Nix, Gary Emery, Joe Keogh, Tom Turner, Andy Dunning, Brian was a talented sportsman. Between 1953 and 1959, he played Matt Rance, David Heavyside, Tom Helm more than 200 games at full back for Slough Town FC, before joining Maidenhead United. He was also a prominent member of Beaconsfield Squash Club.

RON HOOKER, the long-serving Middlesex all-rounder who played for Bucks in the 1970s, died in February 2019, the month of his 84th birthday. Ron played 48 Championship games for Bucks from 1970-76, during which he scored 2,349 runs (average 30.12) with a top score of 125 against Suffolk at Buckingham. He also took 41 wickets with his medium-pace bowling. In 1972, it was an injury to Ron Hooker, who broke a knuckle while batting, forcing him to retire hurt, which contributed to their four-run defeat by Glamorgan in the Gillette Cup, when Bucks looked like becoming the first Minor Counties team to beat a first-class county in the competition.

58 LORD CARRINGTON, the former Foreign Secretary and a long-time Vice- President of Bucks, died on July 9th at the age of 99. He was a former president at High Wycombe CC.

ALAN BENNETT, an avid cricket fan, who reported on Bucks for the Bucks Herald and Buckinghamshire Advertiser, died at the age of 63. As well as being a Bucks member, he was a supporter of his home county of Kent.

We also sadly report the deaths of Bucks members David Dandridge and Peter Baverstock.

CONGRATULATIONS TO: MICHAEL PAYNE for becoming the first batsman in Bucks’ history to score centuries in three successive Championship fixtures. For this feat, he was awarded the Horace Perrin Cup for the outstanding display of the season. GARRY PARK for scoring Bucks’s fastest Championship century (in terms of balls faced), with his spectacular 100 not out from 50 balls against Staffordshire at Longton. Together MICHAEL PAYNE and GARRY PARK set a new Bucks fourth- wicket partnership record with their stand of 279 v Bedfordshire at Tring Park. It beat the previous record of 221 set by the same pair in 2017. STEPHEN CROFT, the Harefield leg-spinner, who made a sensational Championship debut by taking 8-33 against Hertfordshire at Tring Park. This was the best innings analysis for Bucks since Nigel Rogers took 9-50 v Berkshire at Maidenhead & Bray in 1973. For his displays during the season, Croft won the Paul Slatter Trophy as the Bucks Academy player of the season. ALEX HALES, the former Bucks and Gerrards Cross batsman, for continuing to star for England’s ODI & T20 sides, particularly his amazing 147 from 92 balls in the ODI against Australia at , where England scored a record total of 481-6. TEDDY CASTERTON (High Wycombe), for scoring 207 for Bucks Academy against Lincolnshire. The High Wycombe RGS pupil was also named the Wisden Schools Cricketer of the Year. PAUL DEAN, who scores for Bucks and Bucks Academy, on receiving the Bucks Association of Cricket Officials’ Rex Sims Trophy for his contribution to scoring in the county. He received the award from former England’s Women’s captain at BACO’s annual dinner at Tring Park.

21 DIRECTOR OF CRICKET’S REPORT

When coaching cricketers, two important components you are always looking for are continued development, which includes both the technical and the mental side, plus consistency in those skills. Last season, a good number of our players made huge strides forward in both these areas which gave us a sharp upturn in results. We showed periods of real quality particularly in the three-day format, but what pleased me most was for large parts of the season we showed the consistency levels needed to challenge for silverware. If this continues we should all be very excited about the future! In the first part of the summer, we saw the introduction of the new T20 format. Two matches on the same day had its challenges but overall we played some outstanding attacking cricket highlighted by a win against the eventual winners Berkshire. The Championship started strongly with a last-over victory against Bedfordshire matched by a brilliant win away to Staffordshire which enabled us to finish strongly in the Eastern Division. I would like to congratulate Tom Hampton on a fantastic first year as county captain. His drive and determination to push his squad forward was a pleasure to watch. Special mention must be made of Michael Payne and Stephen Croft for winning the first team and academy player-of-the-year awards respectively. Looking ahead to 2019, we welcome Conrad Louth, who joins us from Lincolnshire. He is a hard-hitting top-order batsman who will add strength and competition to our group. After a excellent season with the blade, Garry Park continues as our professional, while the remaining squad is the same as last season. A few thank-yous are always necessary to Ian Hodgson and Kevin Beaumont for all their backing, Tim Russell for his work with the academy, all the scorers and lastly my two assistants Simon Stanway and Matt Eyles for all their passion and commitment. Looking forward to a successful season Jason Harrison

22 23 CAPTAIN’S REPORT

I have been really pleased with the performances throughout the summer and thoroughly enjoyed my first season as captain. The 20/20 tournament was a new addition to the schedule and was one that brought with it a lot of excitement. White balls and coloured kit definitely adds to the game and I think this was backed up by good crowds at each of the four days we played. Winning five out of eight games in a tough group including a victory against Berkshire – the stand-out team for the last three years – represented a good competition for us. I think the biggest learner for us as a side is how we can back up our first game with the second. Having won all our first games we must identify a way to maintain levels for the second game. It is definitely a competition that I think we are going to have some success in over the next few years. The introduction of the 20/20 tournament did lead to a knock-out competition in the one-day cup, which again for the first time was played in coloured kit and white balls. This I must say is a far better game and one that I hope local leagues will follow suit. We put in a really good performance in the first game on a very cold and wet day at Wycombe, beating Cambridgeshire. Unfortunately, we let ourselves down a little in the second round where we won the toss and found ourselves four wickets down very quickly. However, we did put a score on the board and the way the lads bowled and fielded during the game was as good as it’s been for a few years. To take the game into the last over was a credit to all the guys. Even with the loss, I believe it was the start of the confidence building in the group. Moving into the Championship, we had not won a game for a couple of years, and to get a last-over victory in the first game versus Bedfordshire was a huge moment for us. We then took this confidence into the next game and played arguably the perfect match against Northumberland. Our next opponents Lincolnshire got the better of us at Chesham and it was a match that showed just how important first innings runs are. We could not produce the same standards we had in the first two games and ultimately fell short from there. The next match was the frustration for me. We turned up to Fenners and found a pitch, that in all honesty was not good enough for minor counties cricket. It offered variable pace and bounce and excessive spin from day one. That being said it was the same for both sides and unfortunately, we came out the wrong side of it. We then headed to Staffordshire and got the win with what was described as our best ever performance by Jason Harrison. This was brilliant as it kept us in the title hunt for the final game. We did all we could and got the win versus Hertfordshire but ultimately a lack of bonus points in a couple of the games hurt us and we missed out and came fourth. The most pleasing thing for me as captain was the way that every member of the squad contributed to winning us games of cricket this year. To a man they have all achieved something. I could mention everyone, but I would like to mention one person. That’s Michael Payne – the way he led the batting unit this year in Championship cricket was superb and to score three hundreds in consecutive games was amazing to witness. There is a lot more to come from this group of players and I cannot wait to get going again this year. Tom Hampton 22 23 Tom Hampton makes his first toss as Bucks captain before their Unicorns Trophy match against Cambridgeshire at High Wycombe, watched by visiting captain James Williams and umpires David Gower and Steve Cobb.

From this coming season, players capped by the county will receive special numbered caps. County caps have been awarded for about 100 years, but only those since the Second World have been accurately recorded. So the number on the caps relates to those players capped since 1946. 29 30 Garry Park acknowledges the applause after his 166 against Bedfordshire

29 30 UNICORNS COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP Buckinghamshire v Bedfordshire at Tring Park on Sunday-Tuesday June 24th-26th Bucks won by 84 runs. Toss won by Bucks Bucks gained their first Championship victory for three seasons with a thrilling last-over success. A Bucks record fourth-wicket stand of 279 between Michael Payne and Garry Park – beating the 221 the same pair put on against Staffordshire 12 months ago – put Bucks in charge. Park made 166 from just 179 balls with three sixes and 20 fours, while Payne was unbeaten on 123 from 200 balls when the innings closed on 383-6 after 90 overs. In reply Beds slipped from 110-1 to 181 all out, Masoor Khan taking four wickets. Bucks declined to enforce the follow-on, and led by Payne’s 56, made 195 all out in their second innings to set Bedfordshire a massive 399 for victory. After taking four early wickets, Bucks seemed home and dry. But a century from Andy Reynoldson looked to have secured a draw when Beds reached the final over on 313-8. But spinner Matt Rance trapped Reynoldson lbw for 159 with the first ball of the over, and bowled last man Harry McBrearty with the next to finish with 7-103 from 38.2 overs.

31 Michael Payne comes in after his 126 against Northumberland

32 UNICORNS COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP Northumberland v Buckinghamshire at Jesmond on Sunday-Monday July 8th-9th Bucks won by an innings & 59 runs. Toss won by Northumberland Skipper Tom Hampton took eight wickets in the match as Bucks won with more than a day to spare. They took charge on the first day, rattling up 440-9. Michael Payne made his second successive century, scoring 126 from 173 balls with 17 fours and sharing in century stands with Masoor Khan (63) and with Dan Marles, who was was unluckily dismissed for 99. Hampton then took centre stage, taking 5-51 from 19 overs, as Northumberland slipped from 76-1 to 186 all out in reply. The hosts fared little better second time around after being asked to follow on, falling for 195 all out. Hampton again led the way with 3-40 – for match figures of 8-91. Wicket-keeper Robin Pritchard took six catches in Northumberland’s first innings.

33 34 UNICORNS COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP Buckinghamshire v Lincolnshire at Chesham on Sunday-Tuesday July 22nd-24th Lincolnshire won by 8 wkts. Toss won by Bucks An historic display by Michael Payne, who became the first Bucks batsmen to score centuries in three successive Champion- ship matches, could not undo the damage of a disastrous first day. Choosing to bat first, Bucks were dismissed for 147, having at one stage been 28-5. By contrast, Lincolnshire rattled up a massive 486-3 in 90 overs, thanks to an unbeaten 230 from opener Joe Kendall and 137 from Louis Kimber. Trailing by 339 runs on first innings, Bucks performed much better second time around thanks to Payne. The Tring Park player, who had scored 123 not out against Bedfordshire and 126 against Northumberland, made it three in a row with 125. He shared a third-wicket stand of 161 with AJ Woodland, who scored 68 on his return to the side. At 261-8, Bucks still looked like losing by an innings. But a ninth-wicket stand of 87 between Cameron Parsons (64no) and Tom Hampton (48) avoided that indignity.

33 34 UNICORNS COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP Cambridgeshire v Buckinghamshire at Fenners on Sunday-Monday August 5th-6th Cambridgeshire won by two wickets. Toss won by Bucks Another superb individual display from Michael Payne – this time with the ball – could not prevent Bucks suffering a two- wicket defeat. Payne had figures of 7-44 with his off-spin in the second innings of the low-scoring match, which finished a day early. Bucks recovered from 49-4 to 174 all out thanks to a sixth-wicket stand of 59 between Shelvin Gumbs (62) and debutant wicket-keeper Brandon Allen (Lansdown). Cambridgeshire slipped from 102-1 to 194 all out, thanks to the left-arm spin of Masoor Khan, who took 6-36. Bucks struggled again in their second innings for 165, as Rob Sayer captured 8-66. Left 146 for victory, the hosts looked like cruising home at 88-1. But Payne then delivered his deadly spell before they eventually crept over the line at 147-8.

36 UNICORNS COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP Staffordshire v Buckinghamshire at Longton on Sunday-Tuesday August 19th-21st Bucks won by 3 wkts. Toss won by Bucks Garry Park scored probably the fastest century in the Bucks’s history, when hitting 100 not out from just 50 balls as they se- cured their third Championship win of the summer. Going back into history, the speed of innings was based on minutes, rather than balls faced, but there is no recorded instance of a faster century for Bucks. On the first day Staffordshire made 361, despite fine bowling from Jonathan Burden, who took 5-96 from 22 overs. Bucks’ reply was based on an opening stand of 160 between AJ Woodland (61) and Masoor Khan, who scored 133 from 229 balls with a six and 12 fours. However his innings was overshadowed by Park, who dominated an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 141 in 13 overs with Michael Payne (57no) as the visitors reached 396-3 - a first innings lead of 35. Matt Rance, who took 4-17 from nine overs, helped reduce Staffs from 118-2 to 213 all out in their second innings. This left Bucks needing 179 for victory, and Khan’s unbeaten 75 saw them home.

37 38 39 UNICORNS COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP Buckinghamshire v Hertfordshire at Tring Park on Sunday-Tuesday September 2nd-4th Bucks won by 8 wkts. Toss won by Bucks A sensational bowling performance by Stephen Croft on his Championship debut set up a convincing victory. The 21-year-old Harefield leg-spinner returned the amazing figures 8-32 as Bucks finished fourth following their fourth win in six games. Tom Hampton’s decision to bowl first appeared to pay dividends when Hertfordshire slumped to 82-7, but they recovered to 244, Hampton himself capturing 5-60. The Bucks reply followed a similar pattern as they slipped to 160-8 before Cameron Parsons (50) and Hampton, whose 69 came off just 49 balls, lifted Bucks to 272 . Hertfordshire’s second innings was progressing serenely at 162-3, when Croft turned the game around with his devastating spell. With the aid of three slip catches from Garry Park, Croft induced a collapse that saw the visitors’ last seven wickets fall for 23 runs to be all out for 185. This left Bucks 158 for victory. There were no dramas as Masoor Khan’s 68 saw them home.

38 39 UNICORNS TROPHY Buckinghamshire v Cambridgeshire at High Wycombe on Sunday April 15th Bucks won by 6 wkts. Toss won by Bucks A brilliant all-round display by Saif Zaib helped Bucks gain a convincing first-round victory. 40 UNICORNS TROPHY Suffolk v Buckinghamshire at Ipswich School on Sunday May 20th Suffolk won by 3 wkts. Toss won by Bucks Bucks suffered an agonising last-over defeat in the second round. Chasing the Bucks total of 191, the hosts won by three wickets with two balls to spare to secure their place in the quarter-finals. Bucks performed near miracles to take the game to the bitter end after slumping to 94-7. They were rescued by a eighth-wicket stand between George Russell and Tom Hamp- ton, which doubled the score. Hampton made 47 from 56 balls with one six and five fours, while Russell made 53 from 72 deliveries. However, Bucks crucially left 3.4 overs unused. 54 BUCKS ACADEMY REPORT

Bucks Academy had an excellent season, winning all of their matches played and in the process retaining the Beynon Cup and winning the Tom Orford Trophy. Due to the late drop-out from Bedfordshire, the Beynon Cup T20 competition was played as a three-team round-robin competition. In the first game against Hertfordshire, Bucks chose to bat first and recovered from 40-3 and 90-7 to reach 146-8 from their 20 overs thanks to Dan Ogden (43), Stephen Croft (22) and Mo Choudhry (24no). Hertfordshire were in total control at 98-2 from 13 overs. The game changed thanks to four-over spells from Sam Harris (4-13) and Mo Choudhry (1-19 ), while two run-outs saw Herts capitulate to 123 all out from the penultimate ball. With Free Foresters Academy beating Hertfordshire, the final game was a shoot-out for the trophy. A superb display by Bucks in the field saw Free Foresters, who had won the toss, bowled out from the last ball of the 20th over for 106, the last five wickets falling for 20 runs in seven overs. The wickets- takers, all of whom completed their full four overs, were Connor Haddow (2-23), Jon Burden (3-13) and Sam Harris (3-20). The match was won comfortably by seven wickets in the 14th over, the main contributions coming from Teddy Casterton (30) and Will Hatton (32no). So Bucks retained the trophy, following on from 2017 success at Radlett. In the Tom Orford Trophy, Bucks played their first three-day game against the Free Foresters at Radley College An outstanding innings from Alex Woodland (112) was the only highlight as Bucks were dismissed for 239 from 84 overs after winning the toss. Free Foresters slipped to 44-4 from 20 overs, Cam Parsons (3- 9) doing most of the damage. A recovery led by Steven Reingold (53) and David Scott (47) took the score to 140, but Stephen Croft (3-39) and Sulaiman Akhtar (2-57) restricted them to 189 all out from 68 overs, giving Bucks a precious 50- run lead. In the second innings Bucks declared on 288-9 from 71 overs thanks to Cam Parsons (56), Imran Malik (50), Alex Woodland (42), Dan Ogden (28) and Will Hatton (24). Set 339 to win in 90 overs, Foresters were well-placed at 170-2. But good spells spell from Dan Ogden (2-34) and Sulaiman Akhtar (4-46) broke the partnership and Bucks won by 63 runs. The match against Hertfordshire Stags was disrupted by the weather, which washed out the first day and the second morning. Put into bat on a tricky pitch, Bucks were soon in trouble at 75-5 from 29 overs, with only Imran Malik (33) providing any significant resistance. The lower-order batsmen performed superbly with Nouman Aslam (22), Stephen Croft (54), Mo Choudhry (53no) and Sam Harris (20no) guiding Bucks through to bat for the full 90 overs and finish on 246-9. At close of play on day two, Stags were 51 for 2 from 28 overs. They promptly declared. Bucks batted for 18 overs with Teddy Casterton (64 and Will Hatton (26no) helping them to declare on 139-5, leaving Herts 335 to win from a minimum of 77 overs. They were bowled out for 199 in 65 overs. The pick of the bowlers were Farhaan Khan (4-33), Sam Harris (2-10) and Nouman Aslam (2-35), but the whole team contributed to a good result. 55 56 The final game was against Lincolnshire, a new addition to the tournament. Our opponents chose to bat first and finished on 193 all out from 77 overs. Sami Sajid (2-45), Stephen Croft (2-47 ) and principally Farhaan Khan (5-33) provided the control and accuracy to complete a good session. Bucks made the most of improving conditions, led by a magnificent innings of 207 from Teddy Casterton, ably supported by Imran Malik (33), Stephen Croft (65no) and Sami Sajid ( 29no) which resulted in a total of 408-8 from 90 overs. Lincolnshire’s second innings got off to a good start, as they progressed to 110-2 from 27 overs, before another collapse left the score on 160-8 at the close of the second day. The match was swiftly concluded on the final morning as they were all out for 169. The star of the Bucks bowling was Farhaan Khan with 7-29. Bucks won by an innings and 46 runs to secure the Tom Orford Trophy. Unfortunately, the Academy didn’t manage to play any one-day games. Even though we had a glorious summer, the scheduled games were all rained off. I thought, on the whole, the attitude, quality and energy shown throughout most of our fielding sessions was excellent. There were short periods when a lack of concentration crept in which produced errors during the fielding and batting disciplines. However, there was a notable improvement over 2017 and if this continues the players will reap long-term rewards. I would like to thank all of the umpires who officiated during the season, the ever-present Paul Dean our scorer, Academy coach Tom Hampton, Kevin Beaumont for all of his ‘out of season’ help in organising the grounds, umpires and scorer. I would also like to thank all the clubs who have supported the Academy with the use of their grounds. The hospitality they provide is greatly appreciated.

55 56 BUCKS CRICKET BOARD REPORT 2018

Cricket in England enters some of its most exciting times, with the World Cup and men’s and women’s Ashes in 2019, to be followed by the new 100-ball competition and new County Partnership Agreements for the whole game across the county, as part of the new ECB strategy ‘Inspiring Generations’ to be delivered for 2020 through to 2024. To be best placed to ensure cricket in Bucks thrives over this period and well beyond, the Board underwent a restructure after the 2018 season. Rich Hudson was appointed Managing Director, having previously been Head Coach of the Player Pathway, after Stuart Beck stepped back from CEO to Finance Director. Jason Rance became Head Coach, James Savory was appointed as Territorial Manager – Kids/Recruit, tasked with managing the schools Chance to Shine Programme and transition into All Stars, and Emma Boswell appointed Territorial Manager – Clubs, supporting clubs with Clubmark, ECB initiatives, club development and the growth of the Women & Girls game. Ed Page also joined the Board’s staff as Operations Administrator. All Stars Cricket for five-to-eight year olds entered its second year and grew from 24 clubs running ASC sections in 2017 to 32, with 938 children involved across the county. Dinton Cricket Club had a fantastic 110 ASC participants, which was the seventh biggest centre in the country. Great Kingshill, Buckingham Town, Winchmore Hill (Penn) and Amersham Hill all had over 50 participants. Buckingham Town CC were awarded 5 Star status by the ECB following parental feedback surveys. The Chance to Shine schools programme was aligned to All Stars Cricket, with coaching successfully delivered into 54 primary schools, targeting school years thee and four. The traditional Kwik Cricket Festivals provided the framework for the older primary school pupils – years five and six – with seven all-day competitions held around the county for boys and girls, feeding into a County Finals Day at Dinton. Bedgrove Primary won the Boys County Final and Aston Clinton won the Girls’ competition. Women and Girls Cricket continues to grow within the county. 2018 was the second year of the Women’s Soft Ball Cricket festivals. Four festivals took place at Chesham, Dinton, Haddenham and Holmer Green, with the Gerrards Cross festival falling foul to the weather. The expansion of these festivals will provide the basis for our new Women and Girls strategy, feeding into more teams across the County. Bucks Youth Cricket Trust continued their generous support of Girls Cricket, Junior Club Cricket, Disability and hardship cases. Sixteen clubs across the county were successful in securing small grants via the ECB, totaling £28,000 into clubs in Bucks for projects ranging from pavilion refurbishments to supporting the acquisition of new covers and sighscreens. Coach Education support was given to our club network, now run in collaboration with the rest of the ECB South Central Counties – Berks, Oxon, Hampshire, Sussex and the Isle of Wight. Candidates completed Child Support Worker, Coaching Children or Coaching Young Person & Adults certificate courses. An enhanced programme of awards is being finalised by ECB for 2019-2020.

57 58 The BCB not only gives support to clubs but receives great support from our club network. Clubs offer their grounds to our boys and girls age group teams for county games and practice. More than 100 home games were hosted by our Clubs in 2018 - a heartfelt thanks to all our hosts. To this end, the Bucks Association Cricket Officials appointed umpires to all our matches played against other counties last year - thanks to those in white coats. In the background we have our County Welfare Officer, Hugh Suter working away, with formal or informal training for our Club Welfare officers and dealing with any issues. Safeguarding and achieving Clubmark status becomes increasingly imperative for clubs in today’s world and both are key focuses for BCB as we head into 2019. The Junior Competitions winners for 2018 are below. Many congratulations to the winners and a thanks to all the volunteers that ensure cricket can thrive in Buckinghamshire at all levels.

BUCKS PATHWAY REPORTS 2018 UNDER 17 BOYS It was a successful season with the One-day Cup team playing a really positive brand of cricket. the challenge will be to maintain this over the course of a match as the team failed to bat the full overs in a single game. The highlight came against Shropshire, whom we beat by 132 runs. Bucks recovered from 178-8 to finish on 294 thanks to a last-wicket stand of 61 between Joel Abbott and James Dalby. The Two-day Championship saw Bucks deservedly crowned champions after some dominant displays. We were required to bat only once in each game, scoring more than 400 twice. Credit to the bowlers as well, who on flat pitches, bowled every team out, putting opponents in a position to try and avoid an outright defeat in all games. The players showed a great attitude and a willingness to improve. Three were asked to represent the Bucks Academy on the back of these performances. The best bowling displays saw Scott Rolfe take 5-36 in the two-day game against Shropshire and Lawrence Snookes take 5-43 in the two-day game against Bedfordshire. Rolfe also scored two centuries - 141 against Oxfordshire and 118 against Shropshire and 84 in the one-day game against Oxon. Luke Harrington-Myers scored 102 against Oxon and 84 against Bedfordshire. Other half-centuries came from Josh Drage (92), Joel Abbott, Lawrence Snookes, Achan Rajapakra and Under 15s Rahul Randev and Olly Nathanson, who kept wicket superbly all season.

59 60 UNDER 16 BOYS The Under 16 EPP team exists to bring together boys from various age groups late in the season to play fixtures that offer different challenges from their regular season games. While the longer format games against Oxfordshire and Berkshire fell foul of the weather, the strong T20 focus to the season saw the boys learn and adapt to the skills required. The highlight was the three-day tour with two T20s in Lincolnshire, then a 50-over game, followed on the final day by two T20s against Yorkshire. The boys won three and lost two on this trip and also developed life skills of touring. Scott Rolfe’s 62 off 45 balls, which won the final game against Yorkshire, stood out. Earlier in the season, Joe Clark made a maiden century in a convincing win over Northants.

UNDER 15 BOYS The side played some excellent cricket without getting the rewards their performances deserved, hindered by wash-outs against Herefordshire and Bedfordshire. The stand-out display was the 78-run victory over Bedfordshire in the ECB Cup. Under 14 batsman Jai Angell complied a superb 80. Harry Petrie set the tone with the ball, with an opening spell of 1-6 in six overs before Aizaz Ahmed ran through the Beds’ tail with a remarkable 5-5 in 5.2 overs. There were narrow defeats to to Leicestershire (twice), Worcestershire and Northants, with heavy losses coming against Oxfordshire and in the first game against Worcestershire. Archie Palmer captained the side well and was the leading scorer with 161 runs. Rahul Randev made 152 runs. Aizaz Ahmed (13) and Parry Dhillon (10) were the leading wicket- takers. Garry Petrie was selected for the South & South West Under 15s at the Bunbury Festival and has now signed up for the Hampshire Academy.

UNDER 14 BOYS Bucks had a great season, now only finishing joint third in their ECB Cup group, but also played conistently good cricket throughout the season. They recorded wins over Berkshire, Staffordshire, Bedfordshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire, and on tour against Shropshire and Oxfordshire. The ECB Cup games against Wales and Shropshire were washed out. Notable displays came from George Weldon (5-27) and Jai Angell (82) against Staffordshire, while Sikander Rizwan, who took 19 wickets in the season claimed 5-33 against Herefordshire, Charlie Doe making 73 not out in the same match. George Coomber made 87 not out against Oxfordshire and 74 against Worcestershire, while Angell hit a blistering 64 not out from 34 balls to win our final tour game against Shropshire. Hashan Ramandanpulle made two half-centuries, while Tom Whittington made 230 runs and took 12 wickets during the season.

59 60 UNDER 13 BOYS Despite a lot of good individual displays, the side struggled for consistency. There were four half-centuries from Aatish Anthathi, while others came from Kahil Jariwala (98 not out v Cardiff &Vale), Raphael Weatherall and Ben England. The best bowling came from Esra Saba (4-14 v Hertfordshire). and Amit Mallya (4-21 v Oxfordshire).

UNDER 12 BOYS The side had a mixed season in terms of results, often producing selfless displays in the field and limiting opponents to reachable totals, only to fall just short. The tour to Ipswich was the highlight with some excellent displays. Aadi Sharma (pictured right) was the leading scorer with 561 runs at an average of 66 - including a century and four fifties. Zac Healey scored his maiden Bucks half-century against the Netherlands, while Joe Hoggan took an impressive four-wicket haul when ‘turning it square’ against Lincolnshire.

UNDER 11 BOYS Bucks had a successful season, winning eight out of their 12 games. A 92-run partnership between Billy Dodds (68) and Seb Cooksey (40) helped them get off to a winning start against Oxfordshire, with leg-spinners James Batchelor (4-24) and James Conway completing the job. This was followed by a thrilling one-wicket win against Middlesex thanks to Anaya Jariwada (63) and Billy Dodds (55no), who led Bucks to their target of 199. The tour to Ardingly in Sussex saw a rematch with Middlesex in a T30 fixture, followed by wins over London Schools and California (T20) before a defeat by Kent in the final over. Billy Dodds accumulated 246 runs at an average of 41, while Anya Jariwala scored 199. James Batchelor took 15 wickets at 12.40 and James Conway 12 at 11.67.

UNDER 10 BOYS New players to the Bucks Pathway benefited from playing in the county side, with eight who had experience of playing a year younger the previous season. The side recorded three excellent victories in a row. They posted 183 against Cambridgeshire, Harrison Price top-scoring with 41 before their opponents tumbled from 70-0 to defeat at the hands of Ben Taylor (4-8) and Ethan Horne (3-14). Price (4-8) and Adi Allam were the chief destroyers in bowling out Northants for 80 at Stowe School, Byron Page-Medina (30) guiding them home. London Schools were bowled out cheaply, spinner Daniel Chapman taking 3-14, but it took an eighth-wicket stand between Ben Taylor (35no) and Page-Medina to see Bucks home. Harrison Price was the leading scorer with 117 runs, with Byron Page-Medina close behind on 112. Price also finished as the joint leading wicket-taker with 12 alongside Tharul Wanni-Arrchchige. The newly formed Development Side played a variety of teams. Against a full Dorset Under 11 team, Will McKenzie (4-14) and Kieren Patel (34) shone in a narrow defeat. Against Oxfordshire Saxons Under 11s, Patel (64) again top-scored, while William Bamford and Finley Webster were also in the runs in a 30-run victory. At the Ardingly Festival, Bucks had a thrilling game against California. Prabhav Sistla took 2-5 as their opponents closed on 136 from their 30 overs, Daniel Chapman, Will McKenzie and Daniel Foulds battled to get Bucks close but they lost by one run. Oli Reading was the leading wicket-taker with 12, just ahead of Areeb Hussain on 11. Will McKenzie was the leading scorer with 130, while Kieren Patel topped the averages with 23.40.

BUCKS WOMEN The youthful Bucks team performed admirably, recording the double over Herefordshire and a victory over Gloucestershire in the Royal London Division 4 50-over competition. This was followed by wins over Dorset and Wiltshire in the T20. The highlight came when they chased 281 to beat Hertfordshire at Tring Park, with Hannah Bates (61no) seeing them home in the last over after valuable contributions from Tilly Mason (59), Charlotte Woodall (46) and Ella Claridge (35). Earlier, Bates and Hannah Francis had both picked up two wickets in the Herts innings In the reverse fixture, also at Tring, Hannah Bates recorded her maiden century and shared a 132-run partnership with the experienced Jan Godman (84), who doubled up as player/manager once again. Holly Wilson, Bethan Miles, Hannah Bates and Hannah Francis all took eight wickets during the campaign. Cara Duggan (Southern Vipers), Hannah Bates () and Ell Claridge all represented Bucks in the inaugural regional development festival at Taunton School.

Girls Under 17s on tour at Malvern College Malvern at tour on 17s Under Girls

64 65 UNDER 17 GIRLS The side started their competition campaign with an eight-wicket win over Hertfordshire at Amersham Hill, captain Tilly Mason and Hannah Bates scoring 61 not out and 50 respectively. There followed a nine-wicket loss to Wiltshire, despite Mason’s 45. Against Dorset, Bucks won by seven wickets thanks to Ella Claridge’s 59 not out and an amazing spell of 6-10 from Bethan Miles. In the return match, Dorset came out on top. Another fifty from Mason and another five-wicket haul from Miles saw Bucks return to winning ways by six wickets over Hertfordshire. The return match with Wiltshire was washed out, so Bucks finished second in their 40- over league, losing out to Wiltshire on run rate. In the T20 matches, Bucks started with an eight-wicket with against Northants thanks to Holly Wilson’s 57 not out and Claridge’s 44 not out.

There followed a seven-wicket win over Berkshire, Wilson top-scoring with 36 not out and Cara Duggan taking 3-11. In their final match, they were outclassed by a strong Gloucestershire & Wales team.

UNDER 15 GIRLS Bucks, playing in the South East A Division, produced some excellent cricket against quality sides. The highlight was chasing 184 to beat Sussex, who had collapsed from 129-1 to 183 all out. Cara Duggan followed her two wickets with a nerveless 65 not out from 72 balls to see Bucks home. Ella Claridge scored centuries in both 40-overs fixtures against Middlesex. Duggan made 97 in a thrilling six-run win over Kent at Gerrards Cross, where Hannah Davis made 31 not out and took 3-26 with her . Bucks won their T20 group with wins over Warwiickshire, Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire. Bethan Miles’s left-arm spin was of a consistently high standard, while Merryn Sutaria’s fielding was outstanding. The first season for the Development team, Rose Burton Pye’s 75 against Berkshire was the highlight. Girls Under 17s on tour at Malvern College Malvern at tour on 17s Under Girls UNDER 13 GIRLS The side enjoyed an excellent season. They won five of their seven 35-over matches, beating Oxfordshire, Northants, Berkshire Cambridgeshire and Hampshire. They also triumphed in six of their eight T20 fixtures with wins over Hertfordshire, Essex, Suffolk, Cumbria (twice) and Leicestershire. The highlight was a wonderful 136 not out by Amelia Peck against Berkshire. This was a record score at any Bucks girls age group. Another fine knock came from Tilly Crampsie with 81 in a T20 fixture against Suffolk. Lucy Warren was the leading wicket-taker with an amazing 22 in just 25 overs all season. Molly Carter claimed 12 wickets. The Development side beat Hampshire, won and lost against Berkshire, and drew with Warwickshire. Sophia Davis made 51 not out in the Malvern Festival.

UNDER 11 GIRLS The stand-out player was Rosie Lloyd, who had five successive not out innings, while Mehnoor Zubair took most wickets with her fast, accurate bowling. Clare Lock impressed with five wickets for just nine runs. The side defeated Berkshire and completed the double over Northants The Development team beat Oxfordshire Saxons twice, and Northants in a T20 game. Their outstanding players were Clare Lock and Alice Fleming.

64 65 66 Bucks over 50s 1st XI v Hertfordshire at Farnham Royal Standing: Bob Lane (scorer), Simon Stanway, Gary Hales, Graham Fisher, Sharath Jetty, Ian Pulsford Seated/kneeling: Shabas Ramzan, George Eykyn, Temoor Alam (captain), Mike Taylor, Neil Jones, Steve King

65 66 BUCKS SENIORS REPORTS OVER 50s 1st X1

Played 7, Won 4, Lost 2, Conceded 1 The most successful season for some time started disastrously with a 168-run defeat against Hertfordshire after a batting collapse. The reverse was true against Surrey as we smashed 294 (Sharath Jetty 101 from 60 balls and Gary Hales 86 from 62 balls) to win easily. After a further reverse against Sussex, we restricted Middlesex to 197-5 at Slough and passed the total with 12 overs to spare, the captain Temoor Alan (59) and Ian Pulsford (57) seeing us home. It was disappointing not to be able to play Essex due to extreme unavailability, but we were back on form against Berkshire as Alam (82), Pulsford (55) and George Eykyn (54) plus Simon Stanway’s spell of 4-40 gave us an easy win. The last match against Kent was a high-scoring affair in the sun at The Mote. The hosts amassed 316-2 in 45 overs, but thanks to Temoor Alam (141 from 105 balls) and Gary Hales (56 off 29), we scorched to the target with ten overs to spare. Everyone is raring to go in 2019 and we just hope for full availability.

OVER 50s 2nd X1

Played 8, Won 3, Lost 4, Conceded 1 This team is improving year by year and we are now winning matches regularly. We made a bad start, conceding conceded too many runs (289-5) against Sussex, despite dismissing Rob Andrew for 1. A total 116 was a weak reply. There was a shortage of runs, too, against Kent too, as our 145-9 was quickly overtaken. There was better news against Berkshire - a win by two wickets due to a spell of 3-33 from Justin Weller and 71 from Sy Din. We find travelling to Essex very difficult, which will be addressed in 2019, so conceded without enough players being available. Suffolk’s visit to Buckingham was greeted a nine-wicket home win due to John Iqbal (108) and Nigel Field (107no) sharing an opening stand of 205 in the heat. It is always a pleasure to defeat Herts, but John Iqbal, with 132 and 6-54, almost beat them on his own, while captain Steve White contributed 47 to an opening stand of 152. A rain-affected game against Middlesex (yes, it did rain in 2018) was lost as the visitors won a good toss. Please ask all 49-year-old players to make themselves known to us for 2019. There are spaces as some of the Over 50s graduate to the older age group.

67 68 Bucks Over 50s 2nd XI v Herts at Old Owens Standing: Paul Weston, John Iqbal, Justin Weller, Sy Din, Janaka Yatigammana, Andy Swayne (scorer) Seated/Kneeling: Paul Kaye, Muddho Ahmed, Khalid Kazim, Steve White (captain), Simon Mellish, Rahul Mohindru

67 68 69 OVER 60s 1st X1

Played 12, won 5, lost 7 Two factors impacted on the team even before the 2018 season started. Bucks were moved into the very powerful South group and also lost two match-winning all- to other counties during the close season. With no Over 50s players turning 59, the team drew on existing players to fill the gap. They did this admirably, but there was no disguising the difficulty of qualifying for the knockout stages for a third successive year. A magnificent fightback by the bowlers in a low-scoring first match versus Surrey almost set the season up perfectly. Dick Decaires made 57 out of 120, but Surrey won by one wicket. Thereafter for much of the season, the batsmen were not able to build large enough scores for the strong bowling unit to exert pressure and the side lost five of the next six matches by significant margins, winning only against Sussex. Following Decaires’s retirement mid-season, Bucks welcomed the return of Keith Wallis. His total of 274 runs at an average of 91.3 in five innings, including 138 in the second victory against Sussex, together with some changes to the line-up, enabled the side to set targets and to chase targets. The result was a four-match winning run including a resounding eight-wicket victory at High Wycombe against a powerful Kent X1. Victory followed over Bedfordshire in the Bowl competition, Mike Salmon taking 5-17 off his nine overs - the first five wicket haul for the side in four years. Bucks were finally defeated by Berkshire in the Bowl semi-final. Chris Johnson took the season’s bowling prize with 18 wickets and both he and Denzil Owen, who took 16 wickets, averaged below 17. Salmon took 16 at 21.3. Owen also made significant contributions with the bat, while Roger Garrini, who came into the side in the second half of the season, and skipper John Rolfe both averaged 33.

OVER 60s 2nd XI Played 11, Won 2, Lost 9 It was a disappointing season, troubled by the 1st XI player losses, even though there were several notable performances within the team. This meant the captain Roger

Bucks Over 50s 2nd XI v Herts at Old Owens Garrini found himself in the 1st XI midway through the season, with Terry Bentley taking over. The highest score of the season was Peter Langford’s 87 against Hertfordshire, but nobody produced consistent runs which gave the bowlers a hard task. Andy Peacock scored the most runs with a top score of 73. Jim Spooner was the most consistent with the ball. Two wins against Bedfordshire were the only positive results.

92 93 BUCKINGHAMSHIRE COUNTY CRICKET CLUB

TREASURER'S REPORT ON THE ACCOUNTS OF BUCKINGHAMSHIRE COUNTY CRICKET CLUB

Financial Review

Financially, 2018 has been a difficult season for the club, following cricketing decisions to move venues has resulted in a reduction of fundraising, coupled with the fact that the cost of cricket increased as our away matches were the furthest to travel. The Club made a deficit of £4,504 (2017 a surplus of £3,499). The committee has worked very hard on income generating events and continuing this with reducing costs where possible.

The main changes for the year can be summarised as follows: £ Subscriptions 204 MCCA Distribution 530 Income from fundraising (2,394) Dividends 165 Other (288) ______Decrease in Income (1,783)

Senior match costs 6,449 Academy match costs 2,124 Over 50/60s match costs (534) Cricket Gear (1,362) ______Increase in match costs (6,677)

Decrease in Admin costs 450 Tax 7 ______Movement from 2017 to 2018 - Reduced surplus for the year (8,003)

The Club for 2019 has agreed on a budget that delivers a deficit, this has taken into account what is necessary to deliver the quality of cricket in the Minor Counties. The Club has decided to invest in the players kit for 2019 and we are looking to achieve this with a contribution and sponsorship from the kit supplier. The kit is likely to cost around £5,000 and we are hoping to obtain sponsorship of £2,000. Following a review of how scorers are remunerated the Committee have adopted a remuneration system similar to other Counties but this will mean a further cost for the 1st XI and Academy matches. The budget deficit agreed by the F&GP for 2019 is £(6,344) and there remains a clear requirement for increased revenue for the Club as this deficit is reflective of the challenges of the reallocation of home games to other venues and the costs associated with Minor Counties Cricket in general, if we can obtain new sponsors at these venues to offset these costs that would be very useful. Beyond 2019 I understand the funding of Minor Counties Cricket could receive a welcome boost of funds from the ECB however we need to have the details as to how those funds can be applied. The committee continues to support all fund raising activities (see below). The value of the Clubs Investments decreased by £8,532 (2017 increased by £11,402).

Cricket The committee has continued to work extremely hard to deliver the quality cricket that it is responsible for, using distributions from the ECB. The cricket committee's continued focus is on the costs to deliver a team that would be best placed to improve the quality of cricket played. The total distributions from the ECB did not cover the costs of cricket by £9,074 (2017 costs £3,154). Our match manager, Tim Russell (Senior/Academy), continues to be consious of costs without compromising the quality of cricket, however match costs are down to many variables associated with venues, travelling and player availability.
