Hosted at Vodafone Events Centre Manukau Saturday 2 December 2017 The front cover reflects the many taonga & trophies that our Māori athletes have triumphed in world tournaments across the globe. 1 HM Kiingi Tuheitia Potatau Te Wherowhero VII Patron, Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa Charitable Trust Tuia te rangi! Tuia te papa! Tuituia te heke! Tuituia te kaaho tuu! He ariki tauira kua piki ki runga rawa e! Our people have been active in sports since the dawn of time. Traditionally our ancestors had their sports and physical activities that they used to keep a fit and healthy lifestyle, to hone their warrior skills, to engender competition and to create an atmosphere of kotahitanga (togetherness). Together we celebrate the wonderful achievements of our people in almost every sport. We commend their sharpness of body and mind. Their dedication and committment to their sport. We support their role as ambassadors, a role model; another pae on the whata poutama of success. Every sports woman and man that has been nominated deserves an accolade. Behind every nominee is a team of coaches, of whaanau, of trainers, of team mates. Our old people say in whakataukii: ‘Ka kautuu, ka kauhoro te pakari o ngaa heke o Te Aitanga a Tiki e’ ‘Strength and speed will ultimately strenghten the descendants of Tiki the original human being’ Ngaa mihi me ngaa manaakitanga ki a koutou katoa. Paimaarire. 2 Rt Hon Winston Peters Deputy PM and Minister of Foreign Affairs Kia ora, On behalf of the government I extend my best wishes to the organisers of the Māori Sports Awards. This event is an important night for the recognition of your achievements, and for the showcasing of Māori sporting talent. New Zealand is a great sporting nation and Māori sporting talent is a big part of that history. Our athletes are examples of talent, dedication, and passion. They are also positive role models for our communities. I also wish to acknowledge the late, great Māori sportsman and personality, Alby Pryor, who 27 years ago started these awards. And, just in case you’ve all forgotten, I was the new Minister of Maori Affairs in 1991 who helped support the first event. So I welcome the continuation of this event. I also extend my congratulations to all the finalists in tonight’s awards, and thank you for your hard work in your chosen sport. I also pay tribute to all the administrators, coaches, managers, and supporting whanau for the role you have played in creating Māori sporting excellence. Nga mihi, 3 Sir Tamati Muturangi Reedy KNZM Kaumatua, Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa Charitable Trust E Nga Mana Tiketike! Nau mai ra tatou ki te whakanui i Nga Toa o Te Ao Hakinakina o Aotearoa, 2017. Tonight we gather to honour the achievements of our finest sportspeople, and those who contribute to the sporting domain which we can all say builds our National pride as a country. Each year at these annual sports awards we are continually reminded of the talent emerging and distinguishing itself across a range of codes. Sport offers opportunity, comradeship, the chance to excel, but importantly it offers those who aspire to be the very best in their code a standard of excellence that inspires generations of rangatahi who look up to their heroes. Tonight each nominee represents hard work, commitment, leadership, discipline and sacrifice. We salute you all. That is why after 26 years we continue to celebrate sporting success as you too join the founders of this event to create legacy for those who follow. But to be clear the legacy starts at grass roots the committed people who inspire your ‘love of the game’, encourage you to go a little further, seed the idea that with a bit more effort you can go all the way, believe in you when your belief is still out on the court. Administrators, managers, coaches, whanau and then you - our Sportspeople! As the Minister of Maori Development, it gives me great pleasure to join your whānau, hapū, iwi, friends and communities to celebrate your journey and achievements tonight. I’m a child of the 80s and the man Ali himself said: “The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights”. Tonight is your time to shine, kua tere te karohirohi i tēnei pō. Mauri Ora! 5 Pine Harrison Chair, Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa Charitable Trust Piki mai, kake mai, homai te waiora ki a ahau.
