CLINE: Revolution and Reconciliation: The Student Interracial Ministry, Liberal Protestantism, and the Civil Rights Movement, 1960-1970 (Under the direction of Jacquelyn Dowd Hall) The Student Interracial Ministry (SIM) was a seminary-based, nationally influential Protestant civil rights organization based in the Social Gospel and Student Christian Movement traditions. This dissertation uses SIM’s history to explore the role of liberal Protestants in the popular revolutions of the 1960s. Entirely student-led and always ecumenical in scope, SIM began in 1960 with the tactic of placing black assistant pastors in white churches and whites in black churches with the goal of achieving racial reconciliation. In its later years, before it disbanded in mid-1968, SIM moved away from church structures, engaging directly in political and economic movements, inner-city ministry and development projects, and college and seminary teaching. In each of these areas, SIM participants attempted to live out German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer's exhortation to “bring the church into the world.” Revolution and Reconciliation demonstrates that the civil rights movement, in both its “classic” phase from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s and its longer phase stretching over most of the twentieth century, was imbued with religious faith and its expression. -

AIR COMMODORE SIR ARTHUR VERE HARVEY, BARON PRESTBURY CBE (R17-20) He was born on 31 January 1906 in Suffolk. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1925 and qualified as a flying instructor. In 1930 he went to Hong Kong as a test pilot and representative of the Far East Aviation Co. He also founded the Far East Flying Training School. Two years later Gen Chang Kai Shek appointed him adviser to the South China Air Force, with the honorary rank of Major-General. He found himself in serious trouble when, flying an aircraft from Manchuria to Tientsin, he had to make a forced landing in Japan. That he was both white and associated with the Chinese did not commend him to the increasingly nationalistic Japanese authorities. He was held in a military prison for a month before being expelled with a fine of 500 yen (£25) and a lifetime ban on entering Japanese territory – a penalty that ended with that country’s defeat in 1945. He returned to England in 1937 to take part in the King’s Cup race, in which he came 4 th race with an average speed of 142.4 mph over the Miles-Whitney Straight. He then joined the Auxiliary Air Force with the rank of Squadron Leader and founded 615 County of Surrey Fighter Squadron. He took it to France in 1939 and won 2 mentions in dispatches. He then commanded a squadron in the Battle of Britain and was instrumental in persuading Winston Churchill to become its honorary Air Commodore. Some years later he revealed that in 1942 he had been responsible for planning the air side of a combined operations plan to seize a German occupied Alderney and hold it for three weeks. -

Although the secondary use of the site as an aerodrome was not yet anticipated, the Brooklands Automobile Racing Club soon encouraged flying there by offering a £2,500 prize for the first powered flight around the Circuit by the end of 1907! LEONARD KNIGHT ELMHIRST, 1893- 1974 PREFACE THE opportunity provided by the generous invitation of the Brazilian Government to hold the 15th International Conference of Agricultural Economists in Sao Paulo was received with deep satisfaction by IAAE members. Not only had they the prospect of excellent facilities at Anhembi Park, S~o Paulo, for the work of a conference but they looked forward to the possibility_ of learning more about the many developments which have taken place in South American countries in recent years, not least about those in Brazil itself. The strong support of the Federal Government of Brazil, the Govern ment of the State of Sao Paulo and of many private interests was shown by the distinguished presence of Governor Laudo Natel, who welcomed the Conference, and of Professor Delfim Netto who gave the closing paper. The Organizing Committee was under the chairmanship of Dr Rubens de Araujo Dias, Secretary of Agriculture of the State of Sllo Paulo, assisted by Professor Paulo F. Cidade de Araujo and Dr V. J. Pellegrini. As has been customary, the host country prepared a special publication on the agricultural industry, and conference participants had the benefit of the most informative study Brazil's Agricultural Sector: Economic Behaviour, Problems and Possibilities prepared by Dr Ruy Miller Paiva, Salamao Schattan and Claus F. -

CO-ORDINATOR’S COMMENTS by Christopher Howell The hot news this month is the lottery funding awarded to the South West Struts. Thanks to the dedication and application of our National Council representative, Jim Gale, £5,000 has been awarded to the South West Struts for education and promotions. This award means we can fund the Scout Camp, Young Aviators, Build a Plane visits and Fly a Teacher. The will also help our PR Officer, Steve Robson, with the funds needed to cover printing costs and projection equipment. Hopefully, we can then use our own up-to-date equipment at our winter Strut meetings as to date we have been blessed with Mike Mold’s kind help borrowing equipment from his office. The final Strut meeting was held in April with an interesting film shown by MG Car Club enthusiast Ted Lawrence. The film detailed the aviation history of Brooklands. I was amazed to hear how much aviation had taken place at Brooklands. (http://www.brooklandsmuseum.com/aviation_history.cfm ) right up to recent times. There then followed a short film based on early Army Air Corp day’s, the principal role having been taken by an Aeronca. This was a truly delightful film portraying simple, unhindered flying in the 1930’s. News abounds from Europe! Following a meeting on March 16th at the offices of EASA in Cologne involving the Rule Making Group, a proposal has been put forward to introduce MDM.032 for firstly, a new PPL called a Recreational PPL and secondly a new aircraft category, similar to the US Light Sport Aircraft, with a proposed upper weight limit of 5700kg. -

Para tanto, a autora navega entre sua própria experiência de pesquisa, os diversos eventos (em diferentes períodos ou países) que marcaram a estruturação da comunidade, e as relações que potencializaram a intensa vida artística de Dantington Hall, nos anos de 1930. Localizada em uma área rural em Devon, Inglaterra, Dartington Hall foi fundada por Leonard e Dorothy Elmhirst em 1925, como um experimento educacional que entendia a escola como vida, e não como uma preparação para a vida. Nos anos 1930, diversos artistas começam a desenvolver trabalhos educacionais e artísticos na comunidade, entre eles, o ator e diretor russo Michael Chekhov, que fundou ali seu Teatro Estúdio. A autora busca relacionar o pensamento que estruturou essa comunidade, educacional e artisticamente, aos princípios da técnica de Michael Chekhov, apoiando-se, então, em proposições de filósofos contemporâneos da comunidade, para pensar o papel da alteridade como basilar tanto para Dartington Hall quanto para a técnica chekhoviana. Factors which, in the mid 1840s, encouraged the establishment of estates on the South Shore of New York’s Long Island included: the comradery afforded by the Southside Sportsmen's Club, whose members were among the wealthiest individuals in the nation; the flat terrain, which made it ideally suited to horsemanship; and the sea breezes, which even today make it a sailor's paradise. The South Shore Gold Coast eventually extended from Babylon to Bayport. By and large, these estates were originally perceived as rustic hideaways for the rapidly increasing number of Manhattan and Brooklyn millionaires. Indeed, by the 1880s Long Island's South Shore was considered a chic place in which to vacation.1 William Kissam Vanderbilt Sr. was the most prominent of the South Shore millionaires and his wife, Alva, without doubt, was the most ambitious. Indeed it was Alva who propelled the Vanderbilt family into the rarefied air of society's famous “Four Hundred.” Alva Vanderbilt She was born on January 17, 1853, in Mobile, Alabama, to Murray Forbes Smith, a successful cotton broker, and Phoebe Desha Smith, the daughter of General and Tennessee Congressman Robert Desha. Her uncle was Kentucky's Governor Joseph Desha, from whom President Lyndon Baines Johnson could also trace his ancestry.2 A year or so prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, Alva's father moved his family to New York City.
