This will be one of our biggest yet with the club turning 50. I and downs like most years but overall it was a great year. hope everyone can be part of our huge celebration and make 2020 a year to remember. For the first time in Colts history we had two female teams. It was the I would like to take this opportunity to thank some very special people. Barry Ward in particular who has worked tirelessly this second year for our League Tag girls and the first year for our Under year to get our clubhouse to where it is today. Without him it just wouldn’t be where it is now. He has been a great support to 14’s girls tackle side. Our League tag side made the Grand Final. They me especially when I was unwell. I didn’t have to worry knowing the club was in great hands. Also, to Dave Harrigan who didn’t take away the win, but we were incredibly proud of each and took on a new role this year and has been a huge help to me, my executive who are amazing and the wonderful committee every one of them. Our Under 14’s made the final with 9 players that who are so committed to our club and to the brilliant helpers that made everything just happen during the year. You are all had never played Rugby League before. An outstanding effort girls! very special people! The Under 9’s Div 3 had a great year this year making the grand final If anyone is thinking about joining the committee, please do it, you won’t regret it, we are a family and look after each other. but did not get the grand prize . This team has come a long way in a I hope everyone has safe and happy off season, enjoy the Christmas break and we look forward to catching up with you all in short time 2020 I have seen this team grow from strength to strength over the last 2 years , Scott and his coaching staff should be proud of their efforts. Our Under 11’s Div 3 took out the Grand Final in style with a very convincing win. Kevin and crew have been working so hard that it was wonderful to see this day happen for them all. Our Under 15’s Gold made the Grand Final as well but unfortunately didn’t take out the win however the effort the boys put in was commendable with many of the boys being chosen for representative football with Canterbury. Well done to all of you. They have a great bunch of kids and I am sure they will get the results they deserve. There has been a lot of work going on around the club as many of you would’ve seen. The male and female toilets have been upgraded, the clubhouse being refurbished, a new canteen and a new score board. Many of these have been on our wish list for years. We also purchased a new Gator which has been a huge help for set up and pack up. We had some great events this year also. Our Legend’s lunch was first class with Matty and Andrew Johns as well as Brett Finch. Our Gala Day was a huge success, one for the record books. Everyone had a wonderful day and the fireworks at the end finished off what was one of the most fun days the club has ever had. The kids faces made all the hard work worthwhile. An extremely sad part of the year was the passing of one of our Under 11 players Jai Bruynius-Greene. Jai’s parents asked if they could hold his funeral service at the club and this was an absolute honour to farewell Jai at one of his favourite places. Jai was able to attend his teams Grand Final only a few days before he passed and held the winner’s Trophy high. He was so proud and there wasn’t a dry eye at the game. His teammates coach and everyone at Milperra Colts will miss Jai so much. He was a character with a great sense of humour and was so important to the Under 11’s. His family is always welcome at our club with open arms. 05 MILPERRA COLTS JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2019 Grant Bolling’s PRESIDENT’S REPORT Once again it was a great year for the Milperra Colts, we had our ups So, with another season over we look forward to season 2020. Scandals in sport AN ACCOMPANIMENT TO ON THE TAKE TONY JOEL AND MATHEW TURNER Contemporary Histories Research Group, Deakin University February 2020 he events that enveloped the Victorian Football League (VFL) generally and the Carlton Football Club especially in September 1910 were not unprecedented. Gambling was entrenched in TMelbourne’s sporting landscape and rumours about footballers “playing dead” to fix the results of certain matches had swirled around the city’s ovals, pubs, and back streets for decades. On occasion, firmer allegations had even forced authorities into conducting formal inquiries. The Carlton bribery scandal, then, was not the first or only time when footballers were interrogated by officials from either their club or governing body over corruption charges. It was the most sensational case, however, and not only because of the guilty verdicts and harsh punishments handed down. As our new book On The Take reveals in intricate detail, it was a particularly controversial episode due to such a prominent figure as Carlton’s triple premiership hero Alex “Bongo” Lang being implicated as the scandal’s chief protagonist. Indeed, there is something captivating about scandals involving professional athletes and our fascination is only amplified when champions are embroiled, and long bans are sanctioned. As a by-product of modernity’s cult of celebrity, it is not uncommon for high-profile sportspeople to find themselves exposed by unlawful, immoral, or simply ill-advised behaviour whether it be directly related to their sporting performances or instead concerning their personal lives. Most cases can be categorised as somehow relating to either sex, illegal or criminal activity, violence, various forms of cheating (with drugs/doping so prevalent it can be considered a separate category), prohibited gambling and match-fixing.
